Hope that one spiral tooth is heat treated- it will be carrying the entire load. It would be a better design to angle the teeth on the rack just slightly and increase the number of times the spiral engages the rack from 1 to 3. The load would be carried more evenly and less prone to failure, in my opinion.

@@MadScientist267it maybe a different use case, but if you've ever seen a lathe in operation, especially a large one, it could well be argued a much more severe one given the forces involved.
@MadScientist267
@MadScientist267 8 ай бұрын
@@JaenEngineering The key differences are in how things are supported. In the lathe, the forces are all working together (they are balanced out equally by the other jaws). In this, there's almost no support for the spiral and all of the forces are more or less in one spot. They don't compare even tho at a glance it looks like it should be the same thing.

People talking about force and leverage forget the leverage of the spiral is based on its eccentric. This is to say the closer to a perfect circle the spiral gear is the greater its leverage. Same as a wedge, the sharper the angle the easier it drives in. Make the spiral gear larger to accommodate a shallow angle of thread the leverage is really good

I guess the effectiveness of this is dependent on the type of material used to make the helix, and the weight of whatever it is lifting. If that is used to lift anything heavy, the weight/pressure of the tooth on any section of the helix strip could be excessive enough to either make it hard to turn or break it altogether. 🤔 Though if it used for moving light weight objects then in theory it looks sound?

Looks like a good design But, what about friction between the spiral and the red lever.

More than friction, I'd be worried about the stress underload. Pressing the 2 pieces away from each other. Make them both flat and then it probably won't be a problem..

To clarify, that is an expected failure mode that can be designed for. It will always happen, just at different loads depending on the design.

Isn't the point of the original device that the gear configuration multiplies the force you put onto it ? Like this it just raises the jack but doesn't amplify the force. It could work in a production machine of some sort though... It's mesmerizing to look at too...
