you should have printed a screw with partitions (or compartments) along the "screw". It will be much more efficient

*@grain* What happens if you let it run dry from the big bowl? Does it just slowly stop pouring? Or will it start pumping air faster & splash out the water instead?
@danamulter
@danamulter 3 ай бұрын
If it's a perfect seal between the screw and the tube walls, the air flow will overcome the water and make a passageway. Then the air comes in, flows over the water, drags little bits with it up, and that gets spun to the outsides. Once it's there, the spin and seal combined will drag it around in a thin layer at the spin edge while the air is still moving. At a certain point the water at the edges won't be able to move any further up without more spin or more water, and it'll smear out perpetually. If you bump the spin up fast enough to get it all out, with a seal that tight you're gonna have thermal issues but the water would eventually vaporize easier and catch on the air more. It'd run dry, and burn out doing it, I think.

wouldn't the screw work better at a 45 degree angle?
@grain8314
@grain8314 Жыл бұрын
I don’t know, I think it’s important not the angle, but to what height the water rises.
@scellyyt
@scellyyt Жыл бұрын
I was thinking if it was at a lower angle and the actual screw had a lip on the edges then it could act almost like a bucket scooping up water and moving it upwards like in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHndiHRvfLF0ocU

Maybe, however once the pump was filled with liquid it seemed to be more efficient

@@grain8314 If it was at an angle and with a lip it have a chance of actually being an Archimedes screw. This is just a long water propeller entirely dependent on a constant force to propel water against gravity. Archimedes screw is as the other described, basically a screw based bucket. You could turn it by hand and still get water out of a lake or well and in most designs stop without having to worry about water going back down. Some example designs: 1) Just a screw in a tube tilted 45 degrees. Your depending on the integrity of the seal between the screw and wall to lift the water. 2) A scooped screw. Screw is designed with a lip or curve that can hold water on the botom portion at 45 degrees. Leaks will not happen unless the screw itself it damaged. 3) Screw and tube as 1 piece at 45 degrees. Same as 1 but low risk of leaks as its a perfect seal. Same basic principle as 2, a scooped screw, but lazier engenering since its easier to just add waste material (since it uses more material than a scooped screw capable of transporting the same amount of material per rotation). But its downside is I have no clue how to clean/unclog it at small scale All Archimedes screws will take up ~2x more volume than the volume they are meant to transport since the buckets are below the centerline of the screw, and upper half of the screw is functionally useless. At speed they can act like a propeller, but their characteristics as an Archimedes screw are entirely dependent on how much they can transport by lifting, not propelling, the material.
