Thank you for this fascinating information. However, it is not the first mass ever to the televised. We have a complete, 1 hour long High Mass for Easter Sunday from the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St Vibiana, Los Angeles, dated 1944.

Very precious recording. I am however struggling to understand why the Kyrials are from IX Mass (Cum Iubilo); are these melodies not supposed to be sung on celebrations related to Virgin Mary?
@timotheecoloueille76472 жыл бұрын
Notre-Dame cathedral has specific traditions as they made extensive use of the Henri du Mont kyrials (noted as ad libitum in the Liber Usualis), hence a habit of choosing chants only for aesthetic reasons

Gregorian Mass setting are not "hard and strict" rule ie it is not necessary to strictly follow the setting according to its intended usage. Missa de Angelis, for eg, is used pretty much at any Sundays and feastdays. the selection on which setting to use is up to the custom of that particular church, according to the ability of the choir to execute it. If they only know de Angelis, that's it. If they can sing other settings, so be it. As for this video, Missa Cum Jubilo is typically used in many places for Christmas season, apart from its proper setting ie no. II or III. And I think it's proper, considering we are honouring His Blessed Mother too, and the cathedral in this video was built in honour of Notre Dame ie Our Lady.

A fascinating rare treasure, I struggled to read the inscription at the start. Television? 1942? In German-occupied France?

And I've never seen a ?Bugia/Bougie? portable candle held next to the Bishop! Long extinct I think!

1948. Television transmissions stopped during the war and restarted sometime afterward the war had finished. In the UK it was a June 1946. 3 pm. It would make sense that the signal was stopped during the war because of the blackouts, bombing and because people were more concerned with trying to win the war to be distracted by the new medium. The radio had more traction at that time.

@@chrisprobert794 The bugia is in current use at pontifical masses, but is usually placed in the middle point of the altar if the celebrant faces the people, and is not carried to the throne. But the novus ordo is very elastic, so practices may differ.

Not in 1942 but in 1948. France wasn't occupied anymore.

The intro titles are painting the history of great events in the “life” of Notre Dame de Paris. This new-fangled broadcast of Holy Mass offered by Cardinal Suhard (the sorta controversial worker-priest bishop) enjoyed the blessing of His Holiness Pope Pius XII.
