(This is one of the very few recordings we have in the archive of a rehearsal taken by Barry Rose, who was still in his twenties at the time. It illustrates his normal method of working, with an insistence on accuracy, tone and tuning as a prerequisite to music-making. On this occasion, the boys were rehearsing Daniel Purcell’s “Magnificat in E minor” one day before a scheduled radio broadcast, choir terms then being rather longer than they are today. The cathedral had been consecrated just over twelve months before)
