I would say Archspire is actually one of the more listenable techdeath bands when it comes to musicality. They incorporate a lot of melody and catchy riffs as opposed to some tech death bands that seem like they make music for robots or something lol. As an example I would say a band like Brain Drill, a lot of times their stuff just feels like a bunch of notes played really fast.

Literally my favorite band of all time, crazy yall are reacting to it. As for the band sounding like they're just showing off their chops, yes, its that in part, but Archspire is a little different when it comes to song structure. They really try to interpret the 'pop' structure, as in implementing choruses in their music. Bands like this are almost meant to be too much on the first listen, because then you'll listen to it again and again and focus on different things. It takes a while to really get the whole picture. Even I didn't like the band my first couple of listens. It was fast and brutal yes, but the vocals didnt seem to match, but on multiple listens I cant imagine it any other way. Everything just meshes so well when you get the full picture. If I were to suggest a song though i'd have to be "Remote Tumor Seeker". It has those traditional metal riffs that yall would like but obviously with a technical twist. Super good band, I hope you guys do at least a couple more songs from them, this whole album is amazing, but the one I suggested will do fine. Love the content guys!

I was thinking of that one while I was watching this one! Heard the singer say they were going for more of a hook in the chorus on that album. Maybe that would make it an easier listen, but - if I'm being honest - I still don't think it's gonna land with our boys

If you'd stop wanking off to yourself wanking off about your analysis of them wanking off for a second you'd see there's seriously nothing impressive about their song structures. You should learn to write some songs yourself. I know you're impressed by their skill, it's impossible not to be, but there really is nothing else interesting about this band. There's nothing about any of their songs these guys are going to hear differently than this song. This is what all of their songs sound like. I've heard all of them. They don't sound different.

I find that the first listen of technical bands is always supposed to be that slap in the face effect because most people can't process it all right away. It's usually jarring and the shock is what usually garners the attention. It's after subsequent listens, when you know what the structure is, is when you can start to appreciate the compositional aspects. At the end of the day, it really is musicians that appreciate this music and always will be for the most part.

The thing that Archspire do better than a LOT of tech death is that they are unbelievably catchy while still being heavy and techy. You can see in parts of that clip where Ryan is nodding his head along to the beat. I can't think of a single tech death band that can get your toe tapping while still maintaining the brutality. As far as the chaos goes, I can see why you think it's chaotic but there are no parts to that song that don't continue to come back. It SOUNDS chaotic but it's actually not at all. It's just a song that happens to be built with more parts in it's structure.
@RX120D
@RX120D Жыл бұрын
If someone were to transcribe and perform it on the piano, I think it would give a lot of context to just how digestible their song structures are. Sure, they take a few unexpected turns every once in a while but there's nothing really complex about the structure or the theory behind this great band. The delivery and performance is what really sets them as the cream of the crop for TDM. I think the tempo and density of the mix and performances are what tends to come off as white noise to untrained ears.
@dylanfarley8136

I think that The Zenith Passage, The Faceless, and Soreption are examples of technical bands that are able to keep that balance between groovey and technical. I personally love this band, Dean Lamb, one of the guitarist, has a really cool and imo wholesome youtube channel, you can always try and hit him up for some kind of interview or meetup! To be fair, I find this band to have a lot of melodic elements, very classically musical inspired as well that sets them apart from other Tech Death bands. The singer has a lot of rap influences and tries to accommodate the instruments with his fast growls and voice. They are just as fast and technically accurate live as on their records which is pretty insane! The speed at which he raps the lyrics of that song and how accurate he is just blows minds. Random bit of trivia also. Jason Momoa is a huge fan of their music, and recruited Oli to help him create a "warrior chant" in his TV show "See". It seems like they've forgotten the 'purpose' of this channel. The purpose of any music is that its art and some people like it. Also, an audition?? I was hoping you would like it because there is actually a lots of hooks and melody in this song, I hope you would revisit them . They're unique and more accessible that what the first impression could give.

I promise that if you stop paying such close attention to the intimate details of the song and pulled back your focus, you would find a basic verse, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus structure. You guys rule. Thank you for everything you’ve done. These boys are the Beatles of the tech death world. Listen to more and you’ll catch on. I promise.

Involuntary Doppelganger that's the one to do, the most memorable song. It's still in the same style but it just stands out and is one I can go back to even though I don't really listen to the genre. The extreme energy og it is what I love about it. This is definitely something that needs to be slowly worked towards as a listener, and clearly you guys just don't like the elements present and dismiss it as a display of skill. but a lot of this style tends to just kinda blend together.

This is a killer song, I really enjoyed my first listen with you guys. Not something I would listen to often, but I will revisit when I'm in the right mood. Those drum fills really pushed it over the top for me, but everyone was on point here.

Also I feel Archspire is the wrong type of Technical Death for you guys, I think more Beyond Creation would be along your preferences. They are the melody masters and not as big or mainstream as the likes of Necrophagist or The Faceless.

Musically, I tend to agree, but I feel Beyond Creation's vocals would be a turn off to George and Ryan. Full disclaimer though, I am not a fan of their vocals even though I adore the band, so I am biased.

I can respect the fact that you guys are not lying to your audience just in an attempt to garner some fake agreement on something with us. I am subbing for that alone. Also, if it helps you to listen with a better idea of what the band was/is trying to achieve, part of their overall concept was to emulate Tech-9's style in a metal format. So, you were dead-on with your brief assessment of their delving into the rap-style a little with the rapid-fire vocal lines. Nice review!

I already knew this reaction was gonna be wild lmao. Hell, you don't even gotta like it, I know what it probably sounds like to others, the fact that you even gave it an honest chance is dope. As far as this song, in my opinion, it is pretty refined & perfected. Well, about as much as you can be at this speed & intensity. Like, this is one of their more catchy songs, if you can believe that lol. With Remote Tumour Seeker probably being *the* catchiest. But yeah, Archspire is like the pinnacle of speed+technicality+brutality+a hint of catchiness. The other tech death bands out there are definitely more toned down, but still pretty wild at times. But, I think you're spot on with it being like a rap cypher or something, cuz at this level, it's def meant to be a showcase of skill. Vocals and all with Archspire. Which you don't see too often in tech death, mostly the instruments are going crazy while the vocals are kinda playing the supporting role. And, like others have said, some major inspiration here is Tech N9ne, as well as classical music. Kinda weird to think about, huh lol. There's a "vocal playthrough" video for Lucid Collective Somnambulation where he actually goes into his inspiration and technique. You definitely won't like the song, but it might be a neat thing to check out at some point. There's also a video like that for a song called Calamus Will Animate, and the song's intro is literally an ode to Stamina by Tech N9ne, it's kinda funny.
@andrewhart9310
@andrewhart9310 Жыл бұрын
No, I think you guys nailed it. Tech death is really about sounding really heavy, brutal, blistering fast, and showcasing incredible talent and skill. Archspire checks all those boxes, and tosses in the rap-like vocal delivery through gutturals, like Whitechapel on steroids. One thing I think worth recognizing is that Archspire fully understands how extreme and ridiculous they can be, and has a ton of fun with their sound and stage presence. They KNOW that dialing it up to this extreme of a level is flat out silly, but the truth is that most bands simply can't pull it off, and it's still extremely impressive.

George hit the nail on the head. The singer is literally doing fast rapping in Death Metal style. That was the whole approach when the band hired him as their vocalist. They wanted him to growl but in a fast rap style like Tech9, etc. The singer, Oli Peters, even does those hand movements that rappers do, when on stage live.
