In surprised you didn't also latch onto the vocals. His breath control is closer to what a chopper rapper does. And from a composition perspective he is also accentuating the rhythm and tight punches the way no other band I'm aware of. You should see them live. They are 100% this tight every night I've seen em.

Agreed with the vocals thing, but Archspire can be "overwhelming" on the first listen, so all 5 members sound equally mental. I think it's only when you listen to them (or tech death) a lot more that you fully realise how unique/difficult those vocals are

I heard Dean(archspire rhythm guitarist) explain a vocal technique the singer guy used on a part in one of their new songs, I forget which part or song, but he said he layered 2 vocal tracks doing 2 different techniques, on one an inhaling vocal technique thing, on the other one an exhale-thing and they were mixed a certain way to give the effect heard on the record... something like that anyways, I am not a death metal singer..

7:20 Guitarist here! You're very right in that they bring out different pitches from the pinch harmonic, even from the same fret. It's dependent on where you pinch the string with your picking hand - closer to the bridge tends to result in a higher pitch, while the area just behind the neck pickup generally makes a lower, more rounded sound. Mastering them can be tough. Gojira also do this a lot - very noticeable in the verse riff of "The Gift of Guilt". Great video as always Geebz, Archspire rules ✌

One of my favorite things about Archspire is how important the vocalist feels. In my opinion, there’s times in metal where I could enjoy the song even if the vocalist wasn’t there. That’s not how I feel with Archspire. Their vocalist is such a key instrument in their compositions. The verses and the chorus would feel so empty without him. I recommended Human Murmuration by them. Involuntary Doppleganger is often recommended for the shock value being introduced to their speed, but now you’ve already been exposed to it.

They don't use click tracks. They use what is essentially a digital conductor. They each have a custom mix of the song with their part amped above the rest, and each rest is counted-in, and the beginning of each song includes the tuning, song name, and time signature.

In regards to pinch harmonics: where you “pinch” with your thumb and pick in relation to the pickups will give different harmonics on the same note. Yes! I'm so glad you're finally taking a foray into tech death! Your insights and reactions on prog death have been fascinating to watch and listen to, but I think you're really gonna love the tech side of things too. First Fragment, Equipoise, Vitrified Entity, or Inferi would all be great choices to check out next if you're looking for more! Keep on keepin on, Geebz!

This is the first band I've ever heard in my life that is this technical and fast, that sounds as good as the slow bands on every note choice. They don't just burn through scales. That would be impressive enough at this speed but everything they do is so interesting and listenable.

Your pinch harmonics question: Where you "pinch" with your pick and thumb on the string will produce different notes/octaves, whether you're pinching closer to the neck of the guitar or the bridge. Hopefully that makes sense. It's easier to show, than to type it out. Edit: This is pretty much their bread and butter, most if not all of their songs are like this. And I have seen them live by the way, and they literally do this for half an hour straight if not longer. Absolutely insane, all of them have incredible stamina.

Knowing these guys can carry it all off live ('cos I've seen them do it), I'm *super keen* for the next tour: come to Australia the moment you can, Archspire!

I'm an avid Archspire fan so, of course, I loved you finally featured them. If you really want to highlight the vocals check out the track "Calamus Will Animate" off their previous album. Oliver Rae Aleron, the vocalist, is absolutely insane!

7:53 Yes and no. Being "the fastest band in the world" is kinda their thing (including every instrument, also vocals) but there are some differences. Personally, I was a much bigger fan of their prior record (I'd really recommend checking out Relentless Mutation or Human Murmuration) because the songs felt more cohesive (like they're telling a story from beginning to end) Also, have you checked out The Zenith Passage, yet? They also recently released a new song (Algorithmic Salvation), which is an absolute banger (and highly dancable).

I too preferred Relentless Mutation for that reason, but also because it was mixed in a way that the guitars were crunchier and the individual instruments were more distinct than on the new record. It also has more of that clinical but groovy techies that makes me think of a secret testing facility that makes horrible super weapons, whereas the new record has more of a grandiose crescendo that makes me think of the apocalypse (although I think that was intentional, just look at the cover art).

In response to your recent video, I would love to see you decompose either "Drone Corpse Aviator" or "Bleed the Future". They are also two of their latest singles off their upcoming album. Love what you do, Geebz!

Dave Otero based outta Denver, CO is the man who engineered/produced this record and many others. He has a really special talent in recording insanely fast and technical death metal in a way that has clarity but is still heavy as all hell.
