Arctic Goku & Vegeta Design Breakdown & BRAND NEW CHARACTERS UNVEILED!

I'm back! Over the past few weeks, we've had a whole bunch of new Naohiro Shintani designs for the upcoming Dragon Ball Super movie release, and I have a whole bunch of thoughts.

Yamamuro has really let himself go nowadays, I used to like so much his more masculine and bold approach to the designs. It took nearly half of Super for the animators to produce an actually good looking show with his stupid design choices.

+Craqster The hero designs are awful. They're an improvement over his previous stuff, but not really significantly better. The Shintani designs are better because they actual have a natural sense of posture and are more detailed in its articulation.

Being a fan of Dragon Ball and someone who has been following your videos for a while now, I really have to say these designs for Goku and Vegeta are seriously the best we've gotten. This is of course just my opinion, but Shintani really hit home for me. Takahashi did a fantastic job making me see the Z action feeling coming back, but these designs really feel like Z in general is back. Goku just looks like Goku and Vegeta's hair, expression, body, height, everything just oozes the 90s and looks so fantastic. This franchise needs this movie, and Shintani is really doing it wonders. I'm finally glad to say that Dragon Ball is finally where it should be in 2018. Anyway, thanks for the update Ajay, been waiting for this one for a good bit now. Take any break you need though dude, your videos are always fun and informative.

Meh, Goku looks too young and Vegeta's forehead is too big. At the very least, i'm glad that the characters are buffing up again. Takahashi brought DB back to its prime again in his episodes, i just wish his animations were smoother.

I couldn't agree more. To me, the golden age of Dragon Ball was the third tournament to the Namek Saga. I've always loved the style and animation from that era more than any other, so to see new Dragonball content that harkens back to that time and style makes me so _so_ happy.

+4 Nah, I'm tired of Yammauro. His proportions and coloration look horrible and have for years. Far far off the original designs and farther from Toriyama's. I don't want new dragonball to just look like Super. Excessive detail does not make animation better with jerky choreography. Super just looked ugly to me.

All of Shintani's designs are excellent, but I do wish Vegeta was a little bulkier. I prefer him to be shorter than goku but with more muscle mass.

This is loyal to Vegeta's original design. When he was first introduced, unlike Raditz and Nappa who were both tall and buff, Vegeta was short and had less muscle mass.

I really like the new designs. Shintani really did a great job channeling a simple yet faithful look to the manga. I think my main concern is the neck width in the forward profile. I wish the necks were a bit thicker width wise, at least on Goku and Vegeta. The 3/4 view looks much better in that regard. Also, Goku doesn’t seem to have defined pecs in his base form, instead just having the collarbone, something you mention in Super 114 with Yuya Takahashi using the pecs. Fortunately at least the latter seems mostly corrected when Goku bulks up in his Super Saiyan form. Overall the designs look pretty good and very reminiscent of the manga. I look forward to seeing them in action!

The one thing I hope they do aligning with Ajay is tho have the Super Saiyan transformations visually showing the character physiques bulk up on screen like with the villain in the teaser.

Craqster You have replied to at least a dozen comments including this one all about the Shintani style, usually with some response like “its generic af.” I went and counted. What makes it generic? Who is getting triggered? Why does people liking it make you so upset? And this is coming from someone who prefers and loves Takahashi’s and classic Yamamuro’s style more than this. I might not like this design forever, but for a unique, one-off movie the simple manga style designs might be an interesting mix-up from Yamamuro’s take.

However, I think you could at least agree its a completely redundant manoeuvre to spend a year figuring out the best new character designer to freshen up the aesthetic of the brand(with a positive industry reception), only to fall back on the previous designer that had been on the franchise for 20 years.

3:26 So, Base Goku showcases the collar bone while his Super Saiyan Blue form has the defined pecs + the front deltoid muscles like what Takahashi did on Super (?) Either way, I'm very happy to see that the eyes of the SS forms have returned to their rectangular shape instead of Yamamuro's super slanted Doritos.

You know what I think? Plot wise I see these ssgss designs of Goku and Vegeta and remember the Cell ark when Goku and Gohan keep super saiyan form on at all times till the fight, and is because it looks so natural and fresh, without the ki flow that maybe that’s what they are going with this. And this might mean a whole new level of power!

These new designs were posted along the movie trailer just after episode 130 and 131. After such good loking episodes, I gotta admit I was kinda disapppointed at first when seeing them. Your breakdown videos made me completely change my mind and I'm so mad at Tadayoshi Yamamuro now because of you :D. I really love hearing talking about animation. Very educational. I also love that they're going more closer to Toriyama's more grounded modern style. It just looks much more fresh to see smoother, lean and smaller body proportions from Jaco, as opposed to the angularity he extremely style we had in Z, though I still like the Saiyans & humans having defined muscles. Everyone else looks great. Shintani really taking from Toriyama or at least alluding to it is, almost like rebooting everything in a good direction.

Lloyd Irving While everyone does look leaner, I wouldn't say they look like Jaco. If everyone was as thin as Jaco I'd dislike the style immediately. One of the defining things of DragonBall in my opinion is that it wasn't afraid to have jacked characters, fitting for the rough, constant training and insatiable appetite lifestyles especially displayed by Goku and Vegeta for example. It really stands out from almost every other anime with their bendy, lean, Jaco like bodies. I love the blocky look, especially in Z where the characters often looked very angular and defined, something Takahashi really blended well with the variety of body types in the Tournament of Power.

I personally like how the SSB forms change the facial features. Vegeta becomes a divine being who gets to smack foes around with ease. He brims with power and I assume is just loving it. Goku, on the other hand, gets sharper features as he shelves his usually bubbly, goofiness in favor of getting serious for the person he's about to deck in the schnoz, among other places.

I really like how base Goku and Vegeta look. The ones with the coats on have such a great expression. I can't remember the last time base Goku looked like that. Those SSJ Blue ones don't look all that great though, the faces look off to me, so I hope it won't actually look that way in the movie. 5:27 Freezer: I like the face in the middle pose, give me vibes from earlier Z episodes. Back when he looked menacing. I don't like the face on the right. 8:16 I've never gotten warm with newer Toriyama artworks. It's grossing me out...

I think MAJIN VEGETA and all the characters during that time period in Z were designed the best and looked the best IMO. It seemed like they put much more detail then, especially body detail like when vegeta was training in his gravity machine etc. But ALL characters seemed to have mass detail I thought. JIMO.

Frieza looks better than he has in the recent past, but I still feel like Frieza from Z was the best. It defined the mystery and terror of the character by almost NOT defining the muscles and making him have a simple, constant dissatisfied look

Shintani going to the 90’s look of Dragon Ball Z, awesome dude. Yamamuro’s designs in Super looked a little odd in my opinion and the hair even stood off to me. There was shine where it wasn’t needed and made Yamamuro’s art work look like plastic or metal shining.

Odd thought, it would generally be better if the Saiyan transformations eye shaping was more indicative of an intense murderous look. Which would make Vegeta seeming more relaxed an oddity and inconsistency. But, it would make perfect sense for Vegeta to feel intense, stressed, and out of place in every day life, but right at home in battle.
