I went into the Air Force 40 years ago and it was the best branch of service back then. After seeing this video though, today's Air Force has been greatly improved. If I was a young guy not long out of high school in the here and now, without a doubt I'd be signing up in today's Air Force, or Space Force. The standard of living has greatly improved since my time in it. Though to be honest, when I was in, it was the best branch to be in and beat out the other branches by leaps and bounds.

40 years ago, it depended what base you were at. I was up north in frozen North Dakota and we had old 1950's cinder block dorms with a latrine down the hall. I visited a friend in the Army at that time and they were the same style. I was TDY at Eglin and they were much, much nicer as they had generals on the base and I never saw anyone higher at Minot than a LTC. So the south got the best stuff back then. Our BX was like a large 7-11, but at Eglin, even in 1980 it was like a mall.

*****FAIR WARNING TO THOSE NEW TO ENLISTMENT! i had HORRIBLE living conditions in both BMT and tech school. its probably way better after you get out of AETC(training environment), but it shouldnt be overlooked since that is a significant amount of time you'll be there. our tech school dorms had mold, super shitty wifi for $50+/month, no AC, and it took multiple months to get the water fountain filters replaced. so most of us had to purchase our own water filters, fans, and mobile hotspot devices. anything wrong with our rooms took months to get civilian contractors to come fix. dont even get me started on alcatraz BMT. half of the 4 toilets for 55 guys to share didnt work, everyone got sick from constantly having to breathe in dust, entire squadron shared one small laundry room with no schedule system or ample opportunity to even do laundry. laundry would also get mixed up in other flights, during peak covid btw. some of these discrepancies may seem minor to some of you, but i believe newcomers have a right to know what to expect/what its really like and this was just a small snippet.

Went to Bright Star deployment in Egypt in 1983 with the Air Force. Marines and Army were there too. I distinctly remember looking out at the desert from my 12th floor room at the Cairo Hilton. In the distance I could see the Army and Marines pitching there tents in the middle of the desert. I slept well that night. Air Force takes care of their people and want them to reenlist. Army wants their people used to living in foxholes and having bad food.

Unfortunately while you live in the dorms, you don’t receive food or housing pay because you’re entitled to the dining facilities and you have a dorm. Once you move out of the dorms, then you receive your food and housing pay. Does that make sense?
