Are AIR holes NECESSARY ? ? | INCUBATION tips | What we LEARNED (2022)
What's up gecko FAM!
So I used to totally be on the side against AIR holes in incubation tubs UNTIL this happened to us THIS year. I learned that in certain situations, air holes are 100% necessary to most SAFELY bring our geckos into this world.
Let me know your thoughts on the topic, whether you believe air holes are 100% necessary for incubation containers, or not.

I completely agree with you. I had issues one year with not having enough air flow in the containers. I always put holes in the containers. One year I tried not doing it and got bad eggs. I went back to holes and never had it happen again.

Humidity plays a factor in air exchange for the eggs. Since they breathe through a permeable membrane, egg. Which is why in arid regions a smaller tub works, for the egg. The problem after hatching is there is no way to remove CO2 build up.(assuming no holes in cup)
@GeekyGeckoCreations

Yes! You are correct! I saw that recently in a video talking about c02 build up! Do eggs exhale C02 before the babies hatch? Because some babies were dying before hatching or right at birth, but yes i did see people talking about c02 recently!

When not using air holes you have to open the containers for more air every so often. If using little portion cups then thats not much air at all. I use small tubs and if air holes then gotta check it from geting to dry, if no air holes gotta burp once a week. No issue if do either of those but maybe if would have burped the portion cups it may not have happened but would have to do it more often. . Think if punch hole in lid moister would leave cup faster then if in the side. I like the holes in side idea. It sucks when it goes bad but its awsome to still learn from mistakes.
@GeekyGeckoCreations

yeh for sure! the pin holes dont seem to release much humidity from the tub at all, maybe the 1/8" does, but so far ive hatched babies useing both mathods at a 1:1 ratio, however some tubs were drying out a bit because i used so llittle vermiculite 1-2 grams. 3-4 grams of vermiculite and a 1:2 or 1:3 ration seems better if using that size hole. Great input as well! :D

I know it is late, but I always used pre punched deli cups, but I kept one deli cup with straight water in the incubator for extra humidity. My be outdated info due to that is what I did in the early 2000's.
@GeekyGeckoCreations
@GeekyGeckoCreations Жыл бұрын
thats actually a great method and observation, I noticed that too, the later it got in our season with more eggs in the incubator, the incubator would naturally become pretty humid, as long as you used deli cups with holes, thanks! :)

High altitudes can actually cause low oxygen saturation levels or desaturation of an individual's blood. It happens because of low atmospheric pressure at high altitudes. Oxygen saturation levels refer to the extent hemoglobin is bound or saturated to oxygen. This came from google search. I do believe oxygen levels are important. Think fresh air not stale air. So I believe it’s beneficial to have fresh air introduced. Smaller container looks awesome but may require more regulation and check of temps/humidity and air flow.

I have a question. My friend and I are breeding and selling leopard geckos. We have you right now, but there is something I need to know. The egg in the incubator, what color should it be. It is kind of yellowish- white, should I be concerned?

healthy eggs are typically pure white, if the eggs get colored it may be mold or dead eggs, you can let the eggs finsih their term until they fully mold or smell really bad, once they smell really bad and are multi colored like blue pink red, they are typically bad

@@GeekyGeckoCreations HELLOO!!, quick question, so my gecko just laid an egg yesterday in the morning, and I’ve been trying to figure out what to do with the egg, such as leaving it with my geckos or removing it from the container. I left it in the container with my gecko and i did realize that the egg did get a little hard and started to dent, that’s when I removed it and added it I to a small container with holes. Will the egg still be okay? Even though it did get hard and it’s dented? This is my first time ever seeing my gecko lay an egg and she did only lay one. I really need some help.

So in theory higher altitude and colder air like mountains have less oxygen than warmer lower altitude areas. In biology we know people in higher altitudes have better oxygen exchange in their lungs and tissues. That's why athletes exercise in low oxygen chambers or in the mountains. So the theory that there is more oxygen is wrong if he really lives there. However the babies might be better at absorbing the little oxygen in the air
@GeekyGeckoCreations
@GeekyGeckoCreations 2 жыл бұрын
Yeh thats right i totally though of that right b4 i posted the video lolol. But that is an interesting thought about lungs and absorption rates. Someone else mentioned C02 release has nowhere to go in those small tubs, so it may build up over time. My question is do eggs release c02 even before the baby hatches?
@alyssablair7613
@alyssablair7613 2 жыл бұрын
@@GeekyGeckoCreations so yes there are studies shown that eggs of chick's and reptiles absorb oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide from the egg shell. It is probably more likely that a build up of co2 was the cause than the oxygen just running out per say
