I'm ashamed of reptile breeders who put phenotype over genotype, especially with leopard geckos, bearded dragons, and ball pythons(spider gene makes me shudder). Personally, wild type morphs are always going to be my favorites, and I prefer it. The overly inbred, typically unhealthy, unnatural look of all these expensive morphs just don't look as beautiful as their most natural form. Genetics have always been fascinating to me. I raise a few reptiles, inverts, and others on a small scale, and have plans on breeding them in the future. I have everything planned out, and will do my absolute best to maintain genetic quality, as genetics are more important than appearance. Extremely minimal inbreeding, combined with ever increasing genetic diversity is my ultimate goal. I have zero tolerance for genetic abuse. It only hurts our captive pets in the long-run, which is something no one seems to ever consider. We must select our breeders as carefully as nature does, holding back on those who cannot add to the populations overall health.

Is there any scientific basis to the observation that the dominant and co dominant traits we’ve discovered tend to be more likely to be detrimental than recessive traits? I’ve only looked at leopard geckos so maybe this is all wrong but we’ve got lemon frost with tumors, enigma with Neuro issues, W/Y with neuro issues at first, super snow with low offspring survival at first and now bone structure issues. but in the way of recessives the only one I can think of NDBE unless we’re counting albinos being sensitive to light

The issue is the closeness in relation. Being too inbred. Line-breeding incorrectly

@@BubbasLivingEmporium for some reason I’m confused by that. Seems like recessive traits would have more inbreeding because nobody likes dealing with het odds over just breeding visuals to visuals. With dominant traits you have 50/50 odds so outcrossing is way easier

So I just bought a pet Leopard gecko who was supposedly healthy from a reputable tangerine breeder. I email them later on to tell them my girl and I love the gecko and she's doing well but she has some eyesight issues. Turns out they "figured out the reason why she was lower priced" and it was because she was a slow grower and they didn't just lose the pairing info. I'm slowly noticing her eyes are dark and it's not just cuz she's small. I think she's ndbe. They refuse to give me the genetic information now too. Is there anything I can do?

The only reason any reputable breeder would withhold genetic information is if they sold the animal as a pet-only, meaning they never intended for it to be bred. If issues are arising, that’s a different situation and they should at least help problem solve issues or explain as to what is going on with your gecko and if genetics had any role in that. There’s feedback pages on Facebook if you need a public discussion or call to action if you’re not able to figure it out with said breeder. I’m sorry you’re experiencing this though, hope it all works out soon

The zooming in and out, and moving the screen constantly is sooo nauseating and annoying. I would love to watch this, I could learn a lot from you, but I’ll have to find this info elsewhere
