Great points. I always suggested to my officers that to stay sharp, use a pellet pistol or airsoft gun to practice with. You may not be able to work on some tactics in your basement, but you can work on the basics, sighting, grip, target acquisition, etc.

I totally agree with this philosophy as they are great training tools. But too many try to use them as a threat, actual self defense, or as one guy told me to "fill my eye sockets with lead pellets" before I could get a shot off with a real gun. Unfortunately a realistic looking and feeling air gun gives many a false sense of power and that's very foolhardy.

Ive seen ccw holders very overconfident in their skill. Acting as if simply haveing a carry makes them invincible. "Whell if dars a threat i cun shewt it wif my gurn." I'd say airsoft could work as person to person self defense to a certain extent. Like if they didn't know the gun was fake at first, they may back off. If they don't and you shoot they may be surprised and shocked, they'd flinch. I think air soft would be more of a stun weapon to the head, then you'd have to follow up physically. I think the stun factor may give you the upper hand basically.

I've got a couple of pellet pistols that are replicas of the real thing and you would have take a very close look at it to realize it's not the real deal. If you had some kind of intruder in your home and you pulled this out to let him know you mean business,, he wouldn't ask you if it's real - he would run. However, if he was an armed intruder and you pulled this,, you could end up dead.

@Jeremy Harris you'd have to be really close, a really good aim, get the guy to stand still for a long enough time to fill both his eye sockets, and hope you can outdraw/out shoot him. I can draw and fire my 9mm or 40 in less than half a second and fire a full mag off at a target in less than two. You can't beat that with an airgun. You're very unrealistic and that kind of pretend airgun guy thinking can and has gotten ppl killed. If you're over 18 quit playing with bb and pellet guns...man up and get a real one. It would be impossible for you to fill someone's eye sockets with pellets while you have a center mass full of real copper jacketed lead for pointing a gun at a carrier.

Actually some pcp air rifles would make adequate home defense guns. Benjamin Bulldog in .357 is sufficient. The big bore pcp rifles have more than enough kinetic energy to stop and intruder. The military found out it takes 40fpe minimum to penetrate the human skull. Those who think air rifles are “toys” are not fully understanding how advanced some air rifles are. Also pcp rifles can stay loaded and charged.

I feel the need to clarify most might already know this. But airsoft. Is not the same as a pellet and metal bb air rifle. Actual pellet and metal bb rifles and pistols are not soft. There is no reason to fear a airsoft. But if someone knows how to use a pellet metal bb rifle or pistol the gun can be something to watch out for. Airsoft is plastic bbs. Actual air rifles and pistols that shoot metal projectiles are not to be under rated that's how ya get hurt. By not givin the proper understanding or respect to a contraption that is not to be takin lightly.

I do Military reenactments. I think that is a much better way to train due to the fact you use real weapons with blanks. this way your training will cover real type ammo, malfunctions recovery and and you will learn how to handle your weapons. I think airsoft can lead to overconfidence.

If you conceal carry you BETTER be able to rapid fire accurately and under stress, all this "comfortable" crap is ok for starting out, but you BETTER get over your fear of the loud bangs and snappy recoil of handguns because that's only half of the battle, you still have to not flinch when bullets are passing by/hitting you.The most difficult thing to overcome in a real lethal self defense situation is the mental aspect, so if you're already too chickenshit to rapid fire live ammunition when the sun is shinning, you will probably crumble when faced with a dangerous situation where the playing field is tilted toward your attackers' favor.

Oddly enough, some of the higher end "pellet" gus in .25cal CAN be viable, last-chance self defense weapons. The secret is a heavy pellet, and filling the C02 chambers with Helium. Helium is a smaller molecule than nitrogen (PCP loader), and will increase the FPS by anywhere from 30-50%! If you're pushing a heavy pellet (35-50 gr, and you can upgrade your "C02" pistol to achieve 800FPS, you have a viable self defense option (if you cant get anything else).

Why become proficient with anything other then the sidearm you would actually use in self-defense? Bad idea and a misinformed advice. These toys don't kick, and handguns are much harder to use unless you're up close and personal. Practice with your handgun at a range or open space.

depends on the state, in most pro gun states you only need to legally live in the state to buy a gun, to carry depends a lot the state i studied in, alabama. i had to present a proof of my students visa, water bill, and then was able to get a gun and open carry, then i had to go to the sheriff dept. they asked me some questions, background check and got my conceal permit... carried for 4 years while in college.

@@americanairgunner you should talk about mods. I built a Gamo p430 that shoots polymag shorts over 600fps. A crosman 22xx custom .22 with a 9 round mag that shoots nearly 800fps on bulk co2. Either one will kill. Also talk about how 90% whoever hits the target first wins a gun battle regardless of caliber. People do not keep coming when theyve been shot in the face.

Modern pcp semiautomatic big bore air rifles are perfectly capable of performing effectively on human targets in a defensive incident. They can kill bear, moose, anything you like, and are very quiet, and cost 20$ for hundreds of shots, have nearly or no recoil, legal almost everywhere, (sorry Brits!) ... did I miss anything? People who haven't been in to airgunning need to do some homework, as better as a firearm might be in some ways, the hunting air rifles are in a whole new realm now a days and cannot be glanced over as an option for those it may be one for.

It’s time to just say it - Guns are just fun. For home defense a shot gun and a 38 snub should be good enough. The rest can be what ever you want to play with. Hope it's loaded ready and you hit with one shot. I have a TC45 but its not easy to keep under the pillow. Just because a weapon will kill doesnt mean it is good situationally.

The only scenario an Airsoft gun would work for self defense is if you pulled it against an unarmed intruder, tot try and intimidate him. Really, Airsoft guns do nothing in terms of stopping power, only if you manage to hit someone in the eyes.

They make airguns that take down a bear or other big game. They're not your .177 pellet gun. They use 3000+ PSI and have to be refilled with air compressors. They are super quiet, cheaper ammo, but typically only shoots 5 to 30 shots, depending on the gun, before needing a refill. A decent one lets you charge it and it's good to go for years.
