One of the best things I ever heard in a homily; “If anyone ever calls you a hypocrite for going to church, tell them there is room for one more”

Have you ever lied, lusted, disrespected parents, stolen , thought bad thoughts, hated someone, sinned sexually etc All humans have sinned in thought, word or deed. Therefore, none of us are good and able to get into Heaven. But God out of His love sent his son Jesus (also God in Human flesh) to die on the cross for our sins and rise again from the dead (nobody can do that only God). Jesus said if you Repent of your sins and put your complete trust in Him for your salvation, you’ll have eternal life, given to you as a gift. @@iloveyellow7214 When I ask people are you Christian? they say no I'm Catholic (One needs to be born again to be Christian. Not simply Baptized and goes to mass and confession; but a relationship with Jesus is needed). Either way we do not follow other people we follow Jesus Christ. If people commit sins in the name of Christianity it does not make it right. You must be repentant of your sins and putting your trust in Jesus finished work on the cross alone for your salvation. Take Jesus as your Saviour that’s what saint Mary did (Luke 1:47: And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour.)

I'm a Christian Protestant who's been studying the Catholic faith for about a year now. I was raised Protestant and feel so torn about the whole Protestant/Catholic dilemma... On one hand, Catholicism seems somewhat legalistic, and I also don't want to commit idolatry by praying to other saints/Mary etc. On the other hand, the tradition/theology makes some logical sense and I envy Catholic unity. Please pray for a brother in Christ who needs some direction. I haven't had a church home in over a year after attending a Vineyard church for a while, but I definitely still consider myself a Christian. Nonetheless, your videos are very enlightening and I've really been enjoying them. Thank you for your ministry and God bless!

I'm a bit of a newbie Christian, but remain Churchless and without loyalty to any denomination. My approach may not be best for everyone, but I'm honestly OK with it for the time being. Always use the Bible as your final authority and test doctrines against it, but in my opinion there's nothing wrong with taking valuable lessons from Christians of all faiths. I'll never be a Catholic for similar reasons, but contrary to what a LOT of Protestants maintain, I believe a Catholic can be a saved and faithful Christian just the same. Religious borders are given too much emphasis from what I've seen - if you have a love of and a faith in Christ and his finished work on the cross, you have your foundation. The rest is just ironing out details. Don't take my word for it though, read the word and pray on it.

I'm glad to hear you're researching the Church too, rnwks2008! I was right where you are about eight months ago, and I'd like to allay some of your concerns about it, if I may. I thought Catholicism was legalistic too, until I realized that the fine points of law and such mostly serve to explain issues that Protestants usually can't explain well at all (for example, are some sins worse than others and how much? Answer: yes. Some are mortal and some are venial). Also, idolatry means worshiping something other than God, but prayer isn't worshiping. Prayer by itself is just communicating (though you can worship in prayer; that's why Catholics pray to saints and Mary very differently than we pray to God, mostly by asking them to pray for us as well). If you're searching for a solid church, consider attending a Mass or two. Fair warning, though: the liturgy is kind of difficult to follow for a newcomer; see if you can find someone to help you follow along. I hope this helps! God bless!

Now, the only issue with your account is the fear of idolatry. Idolatry has, and still is, the belief that something is more worthwhile than God. That it IS God. Pray is basically synonymous with talk, and is not a synonym with worship, so as long as you don't believe that Mary or the saints are gods, and you don't worship them as gods, then no idolatry is being committed. To imply that as soon as someone is in heaven, they can't help you is sort of counter intuitive. The Body of Christ is made up of Christians, living and dead, and we're here to support each other. Venerating and praying to saints is just about as wrong as praising your friends or relatives for good acts, or asking them for help.

As a non-Catholic Christian (and a fairly new one) I used to fall into this trap a lot. I realize now that it was just a defense mechanism to avoid that "tug" toward Christianity & to continue disliking/distrusting Christians in general. (All Christians are just hypocritical, etc). Self-righteousness is dangerous to non-believers in that way, and I still catch myself being judgemental at times. Learning about "progressive holiness" helped me put a lot of that into perspective. Jesus came as a doctor for the sick, and we all get "better" at a different pace. I know I have a long way to go, and it's a lifelong process for us all. Sometimes I feel like a hypocrite myself when I fail to live up to my beliefs. Thanks Mike, I needed this one today.

Trollaukinn, this is one of the reasons why Jesus Christ exhorts us to be perfect like our Heavenly Father is perfect; also, the apostle, guided by the Holy Spirit, reminds us to live up to that, and gives advice on how to do it in Philippians 2 : 15. But, our Lord has known how the flesh can be daunted by the apparent difficulty of living up, so, wanting our salvation, He has mercifully established the Sacrament of Confession to help us grow into the perfection of His image and likeness with His grace. It's important that, even if we fail, we wholeheartedly want to never fail again, so no evil spirit can keep others trapped away from holy communion with God by effectively discrediting what we say as coming not from true salvation, perfection, but from idealistic hypocrites. What Fr. Mike says is truly helpful: even if you don't feel like loving (1 Corinthians 13) others, do it anyways, and not by your power alone, but relying on the guidance of God and His favor, so you succeed in coming closer to having holy communion in spirit and truth. It's not blameworthy to help someone--for their sake--even when you don't feel like helping them. It's blameworthy to help someone only to be seen by others who will give you a profit. It's still good that you are helping others in the second example, but you are liable to be truthfully called a hypocrite if you do it that way because you are not truly trying to care.
@jimcrants7517
@jimcrants7517 7 жыл бұрын
I also used to fall into this trap, which is the reason I left the Catholic Church twenty years ago. Simply living my life blunted my criticism of people who failed to live up to their own ideals. Inevitably, there are many times where you fail to be the person you try very hard to be, and there's only so many times you can do that before you stop judging others for the same thing (if you have even an ounce of introspection). As a little epilogue, I've gravitated back to the Church over the past 15 years or so and finally joined a parish and started attending Mass weekly this year. Getting over the idea that Christians were all big hypocrites - realizing that many Christians really do try to live up to the standards of the faith - was a big step.

And we’re in various stages of Surrender, so one church goer is struggling, one resisting, one in awe, one in pain, one conflicted, until -one in love. Believe me when I say I had murderous thoughts of a particularly hateful little boy in church. He was an outrageous distraction for anyone near by. After a few years, he was changed! His parents always brought him, never left him. Think God must have had murderous thoughts of me at one time now. He’s always merciful. Gosh, I’m not a hypocrite, just a mean ole judgmental lady. Give people time.

This was absolutely perfect, I needed this so much, especially now. Thank you so much Fr. I sometimes judge myself too harshly and have felt as if I was a hypocrite. I love God above all, but I make so many mistakes. Every time I go to confession, I look at myself and fear that I'm doing it in vain. I tell myself "if you're really sorry, why did you do it again?" I want to be an example and lead others in the right path, but feel that I'm not worthy of helping others if I'm still messing up. And you've reassured me that I can still love God above all, I can still love others as Jesus loves us, I can still want to do His will, and still sin; and it does not make me a hypocrite. And it helps me understand the magnitude of God's love for me and for others. That even though we mess up constantly, He also is willing to pour out His Mercy for those who look to Him for forgiveness. Thank You Father Mike. God Bless.

Loving God is an act of will. Not always can it be an act of the emotion. "Faking it til you make it" in my mind is, Do it even when you don't (feel) like it, because you know God is worthy of our love. We cannot rely on our feelings.

Made total sense to me lol ... and I can vouch that it's good spiritual advice because I've done that through a huge struggle with reconciling my belief that every person is a treasure to God with my attitude that some people are really bad (think history, but it spills over into current events, and those in my own life). Obviously, reconciliation between that belief and that attitude isn't possible, so I went with the belief and prayed for my attitude to follow. I had to work on it, too, by consciously looking for what God loves in people. It helped to remember that everyone starts out as a baby, and that from the moment of conception we are worth God's love. And then the reminders in Scripture that there is great rejoicing in Heaven when a sinner repents, and that the Good Shepherd will leave the 99 to search for the 1 because we're just that special. It was humbling to recognize that I loved people in the abstract, but not always in the particular, and that this contradicts my Faith, which is the teaching of Christ Himself. I felt like a hypocrite, but thanks to this video I realize that I was just being human and attempting to attain an ideal. I haven't fully mastered it yet, but I'm still aiming for the prize.

To help it make more sense to me, I thought of it this way: There are times when you want to act right, when you feel compelled to do the right thing or even SAY the thing that you are feeling, but this right thing/act is so contrary to the way you would normally behave that you feel you might be seen as a hypocrite, as a pretender, so you decide that it would be better to just let it go instead of getting backlash. The important thing to note is, this one act, word that you say, could be the beginning of change within you, the start of you being a better person. So don't be afraid of being called a pretender... be a better pretender, who thrives to become the person you are pretending to be, just as Fr. Mike put it. Thank you Fr. Mike.

hoopoe bird Nobody is ignoring that. It was a real thing. But priests are human. Some will be flawed. The amount of sexual deviance by percentage (including that of protestant preachers) is far lower than nearly all other "professions." The priest hood (and pastorship for the protestant churches) is far more than a profession, but you get what I mean. All archdioceses are trying their best to end this to the best of their abilities, so what is there really left to talk about?

Actually, Fr. Mike, this does make very much sense. I just had a sister-in-law explain to me that if Hillary is elected then she would get rid of religion. I explained to my sister-in-law that if this was to happen then how much have you been praying for it not to happen by means of praying the Rosary daily and going to Mass daily? I even included going to confession regularly and even reading the Bible on a regular basis. In a nutshell since my sister-in-law only really practices Mass once a week and doesn't really do any of the other stuff then the only things that she'd be missing would be hearing a weekly homily and receiving holy communion on a weekly basis. What I didn't explain to my sister-in-law is that if there was no more religion in the U.S. I'm sure that if she ever wanted to go to confession by a priest who she knew was a priest and had the sacrament done at her place it would probably work? I say this because of there being a history of Catholics practicing their faith in secrecy. I also didn't mention to her that even if religion was taken out of the constitution she'd still be able to believe in God to her heart's content. What I've never believed in is when one person says to another that "I'm more religious than you are" because the one that doesn't seem all that faithful could turn out to be very faithful.

Giving up God because of the election? I'm not voting Hillary, but if she wins so be it. Trump isn't exactly a saint either, and no matter who wins, we have to trust that God is accomplishing His will. Hillary's opponents aren't saviors or even particularly better than she is - maybe just a little less destructive. At the end of the day it's in His hands and we (both voters AND politicians) don't have that much power. There's no thwarting His will or the end or whatever is to come. Putting that much faith (or attributing that much power) to human politicians kinda flirts with idolatry. We already know hard times are coming - that ink was dry centuries ago.

Father Mike can you please do a segment on the subject of what to do after you leave church... meaning as a server at a restaurant unfortunately the some of the rudest and cheapest people we wait on are the customers who just got done with Sunday mass. I’ve been in the restaurant industry for over 20 years and have worked in 3 states and have found this to be true at every establishment. This saddens me greatly. It not about the tips it’s about human kindness! My coworkers and I who are Catholics are unable to go to church so that others can come and have a nice meal and I realize this is our choice but it would be nice if people would then treat us with respect the priest just talked to them about. It paints Catholics in a bad light. Many servers refuse to work Sunday day shifts because of this. Thank you!

John 14: 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

We're all hypocrites and it hurts so much in my heart... I've done things that aren't right, but I try my best to crush down my hypocrisy. I pray with all my all heart and tell the truth in the most humane way. I question everything, so no one tell me lies, because we're living in though times. Sometimes I have to lie in order to protect my faith and/or method of thinking. In these days, I scrutinize anything that falls on my plate. Because there are so many charlatans out there that preach fear and false hopes.

Hello Father Mike. I dated this devout Catholic woman for a while, prayed with her and spoke of the importance of our Christian faith. I'm am a devout Christian, not Catholic but I read, and follow Christ's teachings as best as I can. One day, I caught my ex cheating on me, and she went as far as saying she did nothing wrong, that God will forgive her anyways so she could do what she wanted, including cheat. Basically using her image and Catholic standing to be unfaithful. Just what do you say to an attitude like that. Keep in mind, I'm 27 and she is 30 years old.

I was baptized and raised Catholic, very grateful my parents took us to church every Sunday, doing the rituals Catholics do, and very grateful to the church for teaching me Christ Jesus is our Savior, but I quit following the church in my twenties. after trying other churches, decided best if I just depended on God's Word. I'm aware people go to church, then before they even get back to the car they're back to their sinful selves. But, I never thought they e were hypocrites. I just thought, like me, church made them feel good worshipping and singing with others, you feel close to God, then the world swallows you back up when you get outside. I did have 2 aunts, one Catholic, one Lutheran who would argue which church was better. One time my Godmother, the Catholic, was visiting and as usual, talking on and on about the church. My older sister asked her 'Aunt Frances, do you believe in God'? She said, while slamming her fist on the table, 'Well, I don't know if there's a God or not, but I'll be damned if I'll miss church'!! My own father said one time he didn't think there was a God, that when we die, that's that. He changed his mind on that when he fell off a ladder at work and had a near-death experience, though he never told us until years later when he heard my sister and I talking about a book called 'Life after Life' by Raymond Moody. We were talking about one near-death experience in it, and my dad, who was a quiet man, leaned over he said 'that happened to me', then explained what happened to him. Even more amazingly, my younger sister and I were with him at the nursing home where he passed away. When we got there the day before, he was unresponsive as they had him on morphine. We stayed all night. The next morning the Chaplain asked us to come to his office and gave us a cassette player with a tape of gospels and said they now believed people near death appear to be comforted by the music. Also, told us it wouldn't be long now before he passes. So we played the music, my dad still totally unresponsive. When the tape ended we started repeating the Our Father. My father, though he still looked unresponsive, suddenly started saying the prayer with us, but what was really amazing was each time we got to the end he continued on alone, sounding like he was speaking in tongues and having a private conversation with God. (he never talked to us directly and Catholics don't speak in tongues).After doing this about 5 to 7 times, we told him that it was okay to leave, that we would all be fine (he always worried about his daughters), and he passed a few minutes later. I'm sorry, I really didn't intend for this to get so long.

My catholic neighbor does not really care by his actions ... He volunteers for addicts while his family falls apart & he ignores neighbors because I think he believes he is a cut above. I get his pretending & my help that has been abundant to him is over. I have to love from a distance & will not speak with him again unless he comes to me. Feeling used is not something you should have from a supposed friend. It's clear my culture is different than his by the way he treats me.

My dad has ruined catholicism for me. I was raised to be a catholic but never had an encounter with God so I never understood why people were so spiritual. My dad was soooo into the catholic church, for as long as I can remember, but the things he has done and by believing confessions helps him really beats me. I had my encounter with God finally this past year and I realize now the spiritual warfare aspect of things, and I've been praying like crazy for him, to come to repentance state, to understand we need to live more holy lives... but he has got worse, especially after my mom passing yet he still stands his ground in knowing his word etc.... now I know we can't be perfect, but we must fight the good fight continually. And im noticing most people who state they're catholics still have other beliefs especially in the evil eye, or items to gain prosperity, etc. I just want to know which way to go, but so far catholicism is ruined for me , so as of right now ill just keep a relationship with Jesus, the holy spirit , yahweh

Okay. I can’t fault you for accurately defining terms. However, I think this misses the point of what people mean when they call Christians hypocrites. I think it might be more clearly articulated as “Christians practice selective theology/reading” - ignoring the most basic prevalent tenets to love others as children of God, to help the poor, etc., and instead using a few statements to legitimize (in their minds) their disdain for already marginalized groups. This goes beyond their just being human and failing to live up to biblical principles they agree with. How would you try to guide these selective Christians? Or make the voices of true Christians louder in public discourse? These meanspirited people do so much harm to the church’s image.

Remember always that God loves them too, just like you. And that we're all equal footing in the eyes of God: even when we think we're less unworthy than others for approaching God because we are doing this and that, the bottomline is we are still unworthy. If your love is genuine you woudn't discriminate. You just love all. Read Story of a Soul by St. Therese of Lisieux! Go to mass more often and go to adoration :)

THE ONE REPLY THAT I'VE NOTICED IN MANY OF THESE COMMENTS IS PEOPLE BELIEVE THAT WE ARE PRAYING TO SAINTS OR TO THE HOLY MOTHER MARY. WE ARE NOT WE ASK THEM TO PRAY FOR US FOR THEY ARE INTERCEDING JUST IN THE SAME WAY WHE YOU ASK SOMEONE TO PRAY FOR YOU. EXAMPLE WHEN WE SAY THE ROSARY WE SAY "HAIL MARY FULL OF GRACE PRAY FOR US SINNERS NOW AND AT THE HOUR OF OUR DEATH" OR EVEN TO SAINT THERESE OF LISIUEX OR SAINT PADRE PIO OR MOTHER TERESE OF CALCUTTA WE ASK THEM TO PRAY FOR US WE NEVER PRAY TO THEM

My question is why there are so many Hypocrites in Catholic church. Yes, it could be everywhere but since I am raised in a Catholic family, I have seen and experienced this. I was baptized as a Catholic when I was a teenagage. Been going to mass every Sunday till something happened and let me lost trust in Catholic people. For 15 years, I did not go to the church. I still pray everyday at home and believe in God. I just don't want to deal with any Catholic because they harmed my family but on the other hand pretending to be a good Catholic to the outside world. Then I saw so many graces coming from God and I decided to go to mass again. That was in 2015. Ever since then, I got more involved in my parish and joined some of the ministries. Then again, beginning of this year, because of some Hypocrite Catholic, my mother suffered severe illness till today. This again makes me doubt of the Catholics. Perhaps I should just go to the mass and not serve at all, so that I don't have to deal with all the Hypocrite in the parish. I saw this video posted 3 years ago, but just google "if all catholic are Hypocrites" then watched again. God made us different parts as 1 body. Jesus said "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ , that is he lives in us, we show our love to him by serving each other. It is really disappointing to see many Catholics are hurting others instead of serving each other. Again, I am struggling on whether I should stop dealing with any Catholics right now. I believe in God but I don't want to deal with the Hypocrites Catholics. I am in cross road at this point of my life, thinking maybe I should join a Christian church instead. I met many great Christians in my life. Maybe that's a calling from God? Again, I don't know. I'll contemplate on this.

Father, I am struggling with this and have watched this video quite a few times and I still feel as if there are so many hypocrites around and I tend to believe that even if a person believes something, it’s actions that matter and speak louder than words. Yes beliefs are great but I tend to feel for many beliefs are just words and not about actions. So what am I not getting? I’ve felt like this ever since I was young and first noticed my catholic school classmates and teachers talking about how important faith is, and acting contrary. It felt to me almost like they were sucking up and only saying that to avoid getting in trouble or to look good. So why am I stuck on this so much?

Dear Fr Mike, I think that "fake it to make it" , it doesn't really help if not to give us the sort of feeling that we are acting as good Christians , therefore it has more to do with satysfing our need for spiritual pleasure which could potentially lead us off track for we are called to worship God alone. I don't believe we need to fakeit ,rather we need to pray it ; There is absolutely nothing wrong in experiencing failures and dryiness in the attempt to living up to Jesus teaching, on the contrary it helps us to face our powerlessness when we try to act out of the grace of God and in doing so we're humbled : "I'm the wine and you're the branches. Without me you can do nothing" .

Hi, Fr. Mike. My cousin and I have been talking to one of our friends who's non-denominational, about Catholicism. One of the big things he can't grasp, and what we can't give him a good, definitive answer on is, why do we need Preists? It sounds weird, but the main thing he asks is, why to you need a Preist to concentrate the hosts to become Jesus. Why can't we just ask him ourselves? I'd love to hear your insight on that, if you could, thanks!
@jaselynferk3153
@jaselynferk3153 8 жыл бұрын
Michael Stein Hi, Michael! I'm not Fr. Mike, but I can try to give you an answer. The reason it can only be a priest who consecrates the host is that priests have received the sacrament of Holy Orders. n Just like with the other stuff sacraments (Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Matrimony, and Anointing of the Sick), there is both a physical and a spiritual reality at work. Through receiving Holy Orders, the priest experiences an ontological change; that is, he changes at the deepest level of who he is. Part of this change means he has given himself completely over to Christ: mind, spirit, and body. Through the graces that he receives in this sacrament, God now uses him to re-present the sacrifice of Calvary. This means that it is not actually the priest consecrating the host, but Jesus Christ Himself working through the priest. I don't know why Christ chose this particular method (and it's likely no one really knows), but we do know that God has bound Himself to the sacraments and that priests are the special instrument through which He has chosen to make those sacraments available to His church. And, because it is God working through the priest, we can say the sacraments work "ex operae operato" (spelling might be off), which is a Latin phrase that basically means they work regardless of the worthiness of the priest, because it is not the priest effecting the sacrament, but Christ through His priests. If you would like something a little more in-depth, I would recommend looking at paragraphs 874-896 and 1536-1600 in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. I hope that was helpful!

Some of us feel all the time that we're faking what we are. I earnt my living as a translator for the European Union, and it seems I was pretty good, but I'm still (in retirement!) waiting to be caught out, and revealed as not a "real" translator at all. Of course, I also expect to be unmasked, one of these days, as not a "real" Christian, not a "real" Catholic. It's a syndrome, it even has a name (which I forget). My Jewish friend Michael has it. He goes through life convinced that he's an impostor, pretending to be Jewish. There *may* be a positive side to it; we're continually confronted by the question: Who or what *am* I, given that I'm not "really" a translator, a Christian, a Jew. That's a good thing to think about sometimes, but I wouldn't wish constant questioning of that kind on anybody. Fellow-sufferers will say yes of course, the rest of you will scratch your heads and marvel at our weirdness.
