So many new games will be being made with Unreal Engine 5, so let's test out the most powerful GPUs in the world vs UE5 games. But not sticking to native resolution or ultra settings. We will look at ultra, but also high, and DLSS and FSR upscaling as well as DLSS 3 and FSR 3 frame generation when available. We will also look at performance at 1080p, 1440p and 4K resolutions. All testing was done on the latest drivers and at out-of-the-box settings. The GPU cooler models were AMD reference 7900 XTX, Nvidia Founders Edition 4080, and a Gigabyte Gaming OC 4090.

I would love to see an image quality part 2 to really see the differences besides the numbers. You really do a great job showing the flickering and frame pacing issues. Right now it looks like buying a 7900xtx and overclocking it instead of a 4080 or 4090 is the best value. You can spend the saved money on a better monitor, more games or VR goodies.

about flickering, i dont say u wont notice it but if u play at smaller monitor u will notice it less, it also depends on implementation, for example in dying light 2 i barely noticed any flickering, a bit in distance but nothing major, but in cb 2077 or the last of us part 1 i did notice a lot, daniel have 40+ so he will notice imperfection even in dlss, but if implemented good, not much

Definitely feeling better about my 7900XTX purchase. Just couldn’t justify the price tag on the 4090 when coming from a 1080 rig. Was able to get my card and new 4K monitor for less than the 4090. Hopefully as we see FSR 3 progress, all will benefit. Nvidia fans will probably also benefit as I can’t imagine they’d be able to hold these current price points if the performance difference narrows between the two. Time will tell.

@shawn06239
@shawn06239 7 ай бұрын
For sure, but considering the results of this review specifically, there should be no circumstance where the 7900 XTX should be beating out the 4090 given its price point. I definitely considered the 4080 but I don’t really care about Raytracing at this point, I’d rather have the extra RAM. My previous 2 builds I had great luck with AMD where they seemed to make the product better over time. So far this seems to be the case again, hopefully FSR 3 works out. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy an Nvidia card if the price to performance comes back to earth. Maybe with the Super’s coming out next year this will help to lower the 4080 to under $1000, in which case I probably would have bought it. I already can’t believe I spent what I did for a video card, damn times have changed. If this stays as the status quo, I really think they will drive a lot of PC gamers back to consoles. Sucks for us, I don’t think the manufacturers care though and are laser focused on AI unfortunately. Just my two cents.

In Poland we have those prices (the lowest I could find): - RX 7900 XTX - 1085,99$ - RTX 4080 - 1325,91$ - RTX 4090 - 2323,51$ Those prices are so bad. I don't think I would go for either of those, at those prices, but RTX 4080 being 22% more expensive than RX 7900 XTX won't be compelling to buy. 10% max would be acceptable, cause of "features". I hope AMD will go for FSR with AI support for RX 7000 series and newer. If they could boost image quality and maybe a little bit more performance, that would be a good shake up in the market. I think Xess was good with making different algorithms depending on card it is used on. At first I thought it was stupid, but making optimisations for specific hardware isn't bad. With future revisions there can be serious competition, which will only benefits consumers.

It's not about the engine, it's about the developer and their technical knowledge / target machines. I'm a tech-artist and unfortunately a lot of people outside but also developers on the inside do not understand how games really work that well. In a sense you can make a game in UE5 that works on a 12 year old machine just fine. Hell probably even older depending on some of the DirectX/Shader issues that might pop up. It's all about how well developers optimize and spend time on proper set up game systems and visuals.

DLSS / FSR / VRR / Frame Gen what have you. What happened? Did our hardware just take a dump all of a sudden or are game devs being lazy in optimizing their games in UE5 so we need upscaling to make up for it.

Ive been doing environment art with unreal for a while and UE5 has been very difficult to optimise until 5.3 which only just came out. What made UE5 so difficult to optimize until 5.3?
@case384
@case384 7 ай бұрын
@@steve42069master Basically if you want to use Nanite in UE5, you need to use virtual shadows, but Epic hadn't finished them and they were in Beta. They said they were not production ready, which is a pretty big deal when it comes to performance and there weren't many options to tweak things. I'm surprised anyone has even released a game. The performance with static shadows, or shadows which update periodically for time of day was okay. But when you need to use world position offset materials, mostly used for foliage to move in the wind, it would mean the virtual shadow map cache would be constantly invalidated which tanks performance. They've finished shadows since 5.3, increased masked materials performance by 20% and added options which allow you change shadow settings.

Honestly i would prefer less visualy impressive games but at higher fps it's kinda like LoTF vs Lies Of P - lies win easily here especially since you get 120-130 on 4k native with 4080 lol with dlss quality i had like 180 and was running into CPU limitations and i enjoyed the game immensly despite it not having RT etc.

If they want to sell games they need to make good product that runs well if they can't do that then they shouldn't have used UE5 that is the developer decision after all. Honestly devs have been moaning in recent years about how difficult it is to make games and want consumers to feel sorry for them - it's pathetic it got even worse after BG3 came out because guess what turns out it's possibile after all. Needing over 1000$ card to reach 60fps is unacceptable i don't care what engine the game uses.

While somewhat true the entire point of using someone else's game engine is most of the optimization is supposed to be up to the game engine developers not the end users ..... With major investment and input from Sony and CDPR it should get better as their software engineers add to and improve to the code base and show the UE5 developers more efficient ways to do things. CDPR are probably the most experienced group of developers when it comes to Ray Tracing technology and that should bleed into the UE5 code base as CDPR uses Ue5 for their next generation of games. Sony has pumped a lot of money into UE5 and their studios also have some pretty elite game engine developers and they are going to demand more efficiency so UE5 is usable on moderately powerful consoles .....

@@berkertaskiran The point is that it's possible to make a visualy great games without needing insane hardware it's been proven time and time again in the past. You just need to optimize the game and put in the work and hours to do it properly. The way the devs do it lately is just rely on excessive power of new GPU's and brute force things into working and it doesn't work the messes we've seen in 2023 prove that. It's not just UE5 this is industry wide problem these days but in UE5 it's pretty much present in every title so it's more apparent. As they say "Where there's will there's a way" it's possible to optimize games and engine the devs have simply grown fat and lazy. It's also a mentality issue from what i hear these days the devs don't want to be responsible for anything so there's no accountability for them, it's always team issue and nothing gets done, i heard original Fallout lead speak about it lately.

Anyone with even a rudimentary understanding of rendering knows that the issue isn't about "being ready for UE5". UE5 is just an engine, you can make a 2D sprite sidescroller with it. Its not one set of visuals or demands. In fact, UE5 is generally FAR more efficient making on-par rendering to older engines. Its capable of massive fidelity leaps because of its efficiency. What your question really is... is are any gpus ready for future visual fidelity? The answer is... yes. They absolutely are. The main issue right now is optimizing these excessive leaps in visual fidelity which will take some time, but over time even these current GPUs (upper 7000 series and 4000 series) will handle them very well.

There are a lot like A LOT of people that still paly on 1080p displays so I believe is safe to say that all gpus are ready for UE5. The thing with UE5 is (not far from now) that devs can tinker it a lot to deliver same graphics with less impact on hardware, meaning higher frames. The issue is and will always be on pcs, as we all know, the consoles have some sort of a better optimization for the games. I know you will say that there are ale sorts of upscale algorithms , that the games are not running natively 2k/4k/whatever but is there any way you can tell in a real life situation that the graphics are altered? No, because we play on bigger screens from a bigger distance, meaning we cannot really see the graphics going...well...down in resolution. I can never tell on my series x when the graphics are altered to provide the same amount of fps. The thing with pc's is that...two identical pcs will have different performance due to the user. Dlss will get better, Fsr will get better, frame generation and so on will get better and we will be able to get decent priced hardware and play whatever we want. The 4090 is a powerful enough piece of hardware than can run any game at over 60fps with no sweat, if that game is 100% optimized. The pc games devs are just lazy, knowing that the pc hardware is more powerful than console's one.

To me God of War looks way way way better even on PS4 Pro, TLOU 2 as well, on PC Witcher 3 still looks amazing... And whats even worse is the physics, movement feels unnaturaly fast, cutscenes are weird, objects are not interacting with each other properly, like for example when you wear a cape on your back and a sword, it just goes through it like in a game from 15 years ago and so many other glitches even after many patches to the games.

No point in torturing yourself. Try the original 2014 game, or older similar games like Darksiders 1/2/3, Hellblade, Shadow of Mordor, etc. Those should work like a dream on a 1050 ti and look much better.

I own a 4080, prefer Nvidia GPU's in the high end bc of the objectively superior feature set, etc, but I do think it's a bit weird to chalk up worse performance at lower resolutions to "driver overhead" when that impacts the end user experience. Like if I have an Arc GPU and it's not running a game well, I'm not thinking "these damn devs aren't supporting my GPU!" I'm thinking "why the fuck doesn't this work like it should given the spec" It doesn't matter to the end user. There aren't a whole lot of use cases where I can imagine someone on this class of hardware playing on 1080p or even 1440p monitors, but with the introduction of 500hz 1080p and 360hz 1440p I think it's something to at least consider if you are that specific buyer. Whatever excuses you can make for one company or the other, the actual performance is what matters. AMD cards are absolutely trash when it comes to RT in some games. You can make excuses for that too, you can say "nvidia sponsored!!!!!" or whatever, but who cares. If someone wants to play cyberpunk with path tracing or even Ultra RT, they're gonna buy an Nvidia card. Doesn't matter that it might have specific optimizations for that company.

U got it wrong, now in UE 5 it uses RT for global illumination and reflection regardless of whatever card you use that's the problem, any card runs UE 5, but it requires hard work ,patience for good optimization from devs side, but unfortunately it's doesn't. They just brute force and leave as it is. That's why ngreedia wins here. Other cards doesn't perform well. Great marketing from ngreedia

@@MrBALAKUMARA What exactly did I get wrong? I said RT doesn't work well on AMD cards in *some games* (which it doesn't, Cyberpunk and Alan Wake 2 are great examples) and even said it was likely specific optimizations for Nvidia lol
@MrBALAKUMARA
@MrBALAKUMARA 6 ай бұрын
@@Skeames1214 you are not understanding my point, there are games which uses RT mandatorily by lazy devs because it's easier to implement and very much hardware related, because ngreedia is the only hardware that's supports it in massive scale, that too only 4070 ti and above only gives on par performance. Ngreedia is trash at rasterization. You are the one told "who cares if it's nvidia sponsored", because it very much matters. These lazy devs don't want to implement rasterization lightning because it's so hard to optimize in the next gen game, while by implementing RT it's the same thing, hard to optimize, but brute forcing it. But the problem here is in poorly optimized rasterization games any card tackles those performance hits. But when it comes to RT only ngreedia cards can tank those brute force optimization by those lazy devs. These devs...they should be made accountable for these poor optimizations,brute forcing everything, now making cards monopoly for ngreedia alone, they should be sued for this!, big scammers and fraud!

@@MrBALAKUMARA playing games without FSR and DLSS is gone - those will only get better and all new games will support it. So rasterisation performance is not as important as before, FSR/DLSS is. DLSS is still offering better quality but that might even out at some point. RT though is NVIDIA all day long - AMD needs to address this difference otherwise they won't be able to seriously compete, and this is the future of games. Personally at the moment because of the RT performance I would not get AMD card. Everything else is ok though

I am tired of seeing comments calling developers to task for optimization. We do NOT have control of the software development cycle, nor what we focus on. Those decisions are made by management and handed down like the ten commandments. I remember bringing up development cycle for software and I was subsequently forced out of my position as a developer and I don't even work for a game studio. All of my peers tell me that they would be fired. It isn't a devs fault, it's always top brass that is at fault.

This comment is before I watch the full video. Yes and no that gpu's are ready for unreal 5. The devs need more time with the engine. It seems to me that the devs are trying to see more of what they can do with the engine instead of optimization because over time through patches the games become more optimized. This is not new when a new game engine comes out and the games that use that engine are hard to run. Now the easiest thing to do for any gpu especially modern gpu's then more so high end gpu's is to turn the settings down to native 2k or native 4k and medium or high settimgs with or without ray tracing depending on the game. Do not play at ultra settings and if you really need to then use an upscaler. I will watch watch the video and post a second comment.

Depends on your budget and what resolution you’re playing at. The 7800XT is a fantastic 1440p card. I have a 6900XT, very close to the 7800XT in performance, lined up with a 5800X3D on a 1440p monitor, and it feels like a nicely balanced setup to me. The 7900XT is a nice bump above either card but it isn’t a huge necessity in my mind unless you specifically want to game in 4K.

@@11Modern11 it’s a tough call, I wouldn’t say either is a wrong decision. The 5800X3D should be solid for a good while longer. At 1440p, the 7800XT is the better balance today. The 7900XT probably becomes the better balance after a year or two. By which time there will be newer cards anyway.
