Beans and pulses are the best. I love 'em! Thanks for this discussion.

Yesterday I pureed carrots and great northern beans to create a creamy orange sauce. Poured it over sauteed onions, mushrooms and orzo and my kids think its a cheesy pasta 🍜 🤩

That sounds great! I make a plant-based mac & cheese with carrots and potatoes, but perhaps instead of potatoes, using beans could work!

Awesome video, thank you for all the work that went into it. Very shareable!! My favorite bean is definitely the butter bean... massive, fun, and adaptable! Here's one of my favorite bean recipes for Christmas Lima Beans (or light red kidney beans), it goes great with steamed rice, broccoli, and carrots! Craig's Cajun Christmas Beans --------------------- 8 ounces Christmas Lima beans (or Light Red Kidney Beans), dry 6 cups water bay leaf 1 tbsp salt-free cajun seasoning (homemade is great, I reduce the cayenne by 75% so everyone can enjoy) 1/2 tsp celery seed 1.5 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce 1 tsp braggs liquid aminos 1/2 tsp liquid smoke (I used hickory) Add beans, water, and bay leaf to an instant pot. Cook at high pressure for 40 minutes, allow natural release for 15 minutes and then vent the rest of the pressure. If there is a lot of excess broth, ladle some out into a reserve bowl; you can always stir it back in to reach your desired consistency. Add in remaining ingredients and stir frequently. Remove about 1/2 cup of beans with a cup of broth from the instant pot to a small blender (or a separate dish to use an immersion blender), blend until very creamy and then stir back in to the remaining beans, stirring often to allow the starches to release and for the beans to become creamy. Add reserved broth as desired to reach a creamy consistency. They will look amazing! Beans will thicken as they sit, save that reserved broth until they're almost cool, add any more as needed, and store them perfectly creamy.

Beans don’t make me fart. And I eat them with every meal along with lean animal proteins and veggies. Beans don’t replace animal proteins. Beans are not complete protein and they do not have b12 which you don’t mention. Chicken, lean turkey, salmon, and eggs are fine in my book. I increased my egg intake while increasing my bean intake at meals and my LDN went down. Eating plant based though, my A1C went up to borderline. The bean protocol with lean animal proteins and beans at meals with veggies is ideal for me.

Animals are supplemented with b12, otherwise they have none (in 99% of cases). Might as well take the supplement directly.

What is your position on soybeans or Tofu. They are high in fat. Thanks in advance.
@DrStevenLome
@DrStevenLome Жыл бұрын
Soy as unprocessed as possible is fine. Yes they are about 40% fat. If trying to reverse heart disease, may be best to avoid or minimize since the goal is about 10% of calories from fat. Light tofu can work. The problem with soy is when it is processed like “soy nuggets” or “soy burgers”.
@thanhdang2546
@thanhdang2546 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the answer. No Tofu is no problem for me. I have been making tofu out of brown lentils (Burmese tofu). It is cheaper and can be used to make stir fry (no oil) with vegetables. @@DrStevenLome

Are the pre cooked canned beans at the store good? Or should I be boiling them from dry for optimal health?
@DrStevenLome
@DrStevenLome Жыл бұрын
As long as they have no added ingredients, including no added fat or salt it is fine. Some people advocate keeping it organic and making sure the can is BPA free. You can actually get them in a box sometimes.

Great video. For medical theory and not medical advice…..Would you hypothesize that severe arteriosclerosis would generally reverse faster / better or the same with: WFPB sos free + high dose atorvastatin + ezetimibe and LDL = 20- …..vs…… WFPB sos free, no meds and LDL = 50~.
@DrStevenLome
@DrStevenLome Жыл бұрын
Glad you liked the video! In theory, we know the lower the better for LDL, but there is no study that has compared the LDL ranges that you mention. In my clinical practice if the LDL is 20, I would reduce the medications with a goal of keeping it around 50. Risk of meds vs benefit of crazy low LDL. I favor getting off meds.

Black beans are my favorite and I use them often in a simple mix with fried onion, fried canned corn, and a barbecue spice mix. 250 grams of dried black beans, one large onion, and one can of sweet corn costs around €2.50 these days... and I get two meals from that.
