Does your school have a strict uniform policy? Maybe your coach doesn't care what brand you wear. Uniform is a solid part of the BJJ Gym business but also helps bond the team together. But if you can't choose where you buy your Gi and rash guards is that fair or just another hidden scam within Jiu-Jitsu culture? There are arguments on both sides for and against uniform policies.
A big team showing up to a competition unified and all wearing the same brand and colours looks professional and can really help give you a sense of belonging- being part of something. But being told you can only wear and have to purchase over priced team merch might be a deal breaker. Having left a gym that had a gyn brand only policy, I can appreciate a gym that offers branded gear but doesn't require it. I own both a gi and a rash guard from my new gym and will likely buy more. There's something to be said about your school being so good that your students want to support it rather than being forced to do so. What made my previous gym's rule worse was that it was placed down the road when a lot of students had already purchased rash guards and gis from other brands.

I'm overall mixed. At my gym, a Gracie barra, they mostly enforce uniform requirements because of the overarching GB organization itself, not because of the coach/professor's requirement. They cared most about the gi, but no gi was slack and we could wear whatever. But then, they got called up by the GB headquarters and told if people don't start wearing the uniform in no gi and gi, they would cut ties with the gym. Thus, we started having to buy the GB stuff. So, sometimes it's just something they make you do cause they have to uphold the contract they signed with an org. I'll also say, I think people should either wear all the same thing, same color, or everything should be allowed. All one color and style looks really nice. But, if you want to make everyone wear branded gear, then give them something they like to wear. Multiple colors, art print rash guards, etc. GB only has blue, white, and pink gis, and only basic black, ranked rashguards (and they're uncomfortable). There are so many other brands with QOL features in the rashguards. Armpit ventilation with no seam, rubber around the bottom so it doesn't ride up, etc.

Thanks for this episode. I’ve been put in a weird situation where I live, there are only 2 gyms that require school uniforms. One is a Gracie University where the lead coach is a purple belt, no black belts on site. The other is a gym that makes students use some garbage gis that are way overpriced; plus advanced white belts must where a green belt. Minimum of 2 gis and set of rashies makes this a super scam. It’s unfortunate because I want to continue my jiujitsu journey since moving to the new area, but all other gyms are 45 mins away and I can’t make any of the classes with work and traffic…

I can see both viewpoints. My gym "allows" you to wear a different GI, however you need to put their patch on it. I did appreciate that when you initially sign up, you get a GI included with the membership.

I like it when its white gi only for the only reason that you can see who keeps their gi's clean. You can see the grime under the cuffs. Great way to spread crap lol.

With all the barriers to get into BJJ and other martial arts, adding another with kit is daft. Im a blackbelt in Kyokushin and Wado Ryu karate, theres uniform standards: white gi, kyokushin kanji left breast, club badge right arm, association badge left arm. But you can buy your gi whereever you want and add the patches. Im also a BJJ blue belt and fortunately my gym has no kit requirments. Its made available if you want it and many do the support. Heck look, you dont need to wear Harley Davidson merch to ride a Harley, but many do and many who dont even ride. Scrap the policy and make merch so kickass that students and others want to buy it.

I like seeing a diversity of Gi's at the gym. Adds some individualistic flair to my training sessions.

Agree with the gouging when doing drop-ins--that's pretty blatant, but correct me if I'm wrong, do gyms really make a lot of profit on gi's and no gi's? I think the profit margin is probably fair considering the quality of the gi's/no-gi's on average? They probably make more money on the kids' camps and afterschool classes.

My Gym gives all new students a GI on their first sign up. We dont have to wear the Gis of the gym but we have to wear black or white gis. In no gi we can wear whatever we want. They dont even care if you wear gis from other school.

You're required to have an affliate patch on your gi at our gym. Patches are 12 dollars. White, black and blue gis only.

I don’t mind buying my gyms gear. I’m also an older whitebelt so generally less cost sensitive than a 20yr student. I appreciate that running a small business like this will require some level of support outside my subscription but it’s also a fine line and people dislike the feeling of being taken advantage of.

I like my gym, but not a huge fan of their uniforms It would be nice to have more options. Gyms should consider carrying apparel from other brands. 😮

I mean they need to make money. I looked at it as part of supporting my peeps. They weren't getting rich. My school was owned by 4 friends and they barely broke even.
