I still like to think Bowser took the Koopalings in and taught them evil when their original parents disappeared, preparing them to one day be the skilled generals of Jr's army when he grows enough to take over. It's one thing to not make the Koopalings Bowser's kids, but reducing their relationship strictly to being loyal minions is really lame to me. I feel they could've kept that familial bond between them without any blood ties like how Kamek is his right-hand man and father figure. I wish the Koopalings could've at least gotten new backstories along with the retcon to explain their connection, cause right now I'm left to assume that one of Bowser's highest ranking minions are a bunch of random kids he found.

If the koopalings were adopted Bowser Jr wouldn't be an only child, because adopted children are still your children. Also, @MexicanDragon2000 I think Bowser is just a Koopa kinda like how Ganondorf is a Gerudo. I may be alone, but I always enjoy it when the Koopalings show up. They're some of my mains in Mario Kart 8 (but not anymore since they added Petey and Kamek) and I like their New Super Mario Bros boss fights. Roy's my favourite, followed by Larry, Iggy and Morton. Bowser Jr's pretty good too. My headcanon is that Bowser Jr is Bowser's real son, and the Koopalings are cousins who are about junior's age.

I remember that me and my little brother used to be OBSESSED with the Koopalings. I faintly remember us making our own story about their backstory. If my tiny brain serves me right, their original parents died in a fire, in which Ludwig as the eldest, took it upon himself to get his younger siblings to safety. Later, Bowser adopted them. Well, we do still see them as Bowser's kids, just adopted, but to fit with actual lore, they grew up to rather respect Bowser as a boss rather than a father. Who knows, perhaps they internally think Bowser as a father. i miss the old days

I'm one of the few people who actually wants to see The Koopalings return in Mario Wonder, but only if they have more unique boss fights. Don't just stop at Lemmy having circus balls and Wendy tossing hoop rings, give every Koopa Kid their own identity and help them stand out from each other. My headcannon is that the Koopalings are the children of Bowser's brother, a character briefly mentioned as the antagonist of The Lost Levels. It's definitely possible that Mario successfully killed Bowser's brother for good (pun intended), and Bowser kind of semi-adopted them in the events following. They then attacked Mario in more of the early games as a bid for revenge, but since they always failed, Bowser stopped humoring them. However, they together climbed the ranks of Bowser's army legitimately, which is why they reappeared later in the New Super Mario Bros. series. Due to both the new power dynamic and the collective grief of the family, Bowser would go on to treat them in a more formal manner as minions. They're clearly still given special treatment, though, since they would get full-blown world castles in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, while Kamek, a much higher-ranked and longer-serving officer only got mini castles (albeit multiple).

Given Japan didn't name the Koopalings, way back when I was a kid, my dad gave them names based on their appearances he thought were fitting, also based on singers: Ludwig, fittingly, was Beethoven because of his hair, but with van instead of von, also because ELO's song Roll Over Beethoven. Lemmy Koopa was Willie, after Willie Nelson. Roy was Buddy, after Buddy Holly. Iggy was Waylon, after Waylon Jennings. Wendy was Tammy, after Tammy Wynette. Morton was Hank, after Hank Williams Senior and Junior, fitting, given Morton's later name. Larry was Dave, after David Allan Coe. Yeah, we're country folks.

My headcanon is Bowser made a random orphanage with hundreds of kids, so he and his troops could train them to become members of his army. That'd explain not only the Koopalings but also the Koopa Kids. And I also think General Guy from paper Mario is probably a kid as well- the dude calls Mario "sir" and "meanie" and says he's cheating when he loses, PLUS he drives a TOY TANK and lives in a magical TOY BOX. Honestly, even though I grew up in the era of Mario Jr was introduced in, I quickly ended up liking the other Koopalings more. Since I sucked at Sunshine ivnever got far enough for Jrs reveal (also i never owned the game myself, only played on older relatives' GameCubes). But I did own the original Mario and Luigi superstar saga which has the Koopalings as end game bosses with Jr no where in sight. So I just was more attached to them for the concept of "Bowser's kids" and eventually finding out they came first anyway, I just saw it as "oh so there's 8 koopalings, Jr just came later". But these days I see this disdain for the 7 OG children from some of the mario fandom, especially after Miyamoto's retcon, and it's just confusing considering they have more of a legacy in the franchise than Jr does. And it's not like they're obscure no names Nintendo just shoe horns recently as deep cuts, everyone and their mom and her mom have played SMB3, SMW, they're prominent in the old cartoons and comics, and they're resurgence is nearing 20 years ago as much as it pains me to say lol. These aren't no names, they've long been series juggernauts. Personal favs are Ludwig, Wendy and Roy. Rant aside, at this point I do wonder if the Koopalings are even related to EACH OTHER now lol. Gonna have to get a whole bunch of Koopas on Maury at this rate.

I think that Illumination in the sequel is going to say that they are going to be his children (reference to the original series) and I'm sure that they will say that Junior and the Koopalings only want to impress their dad and bowser. I imagine that in one scene Kamek tells him that he found the drawings that Junior and Lemy made, for example, one where they end up with Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad, one where it is seen that they want to see who they want from Mother to Peach or Daisy but I think what would be touching is that together they make a drawing for Bowser of all of them calling themselves a Happy Family

The way I explain it to myself is that Bowser’s species of Koopa is now very rare. They live long, but there are very few left. (What did you think all those mushrooms were growing on? They feed on decay…) Therefore, when Bowser discovers any Koopas like him, he feels obliged to house them. And Bowser Jr.‘s mom died or something. Maybe he had a nasty divorce, so he’s back to pursuing his childhood crush on Peach. I don’t like the idea of “headcanons” though, I don’t think of it like that. It’s just the only way Jr, the Koopalings, Boom Boom, and Pom Pom make sense together to me. And Bowser’s Brother I guess.

The Koopas black magic absolutely debunks that theory tho, they can live as undead skeletons and revive said undead skeletons into flesh beings using a potion, so I'd say it's very unlikely they've died and if they did they can easily bring their dead ones back. My headcanon is just that Bowser adopted a whole orphanage to train the orphans to be soldiers in his troops. That'd not only explain the Koopalings, but also the Koopa Kids from the Mario party games. As for Bowser Jr? My headcanon is that Bowser Jr is a product of the Star Rod from paper Mario 1, Bowser simply wished on the star rod to have a biological son.

I believe Bowser Junior used his Shadow Mario disguise to trick E Gadd into giving him the paintbrush. Bower Junior more than likely doesn't have a mother. I have a hypothesis that when Bowser got ahold of the Star Rod he wished for a son. Skip several months later and a stork arrives with a Koopa egg. This would explain why Bowser Junior looks identical to Baby Bowser as well. The Koopalings are not Bowser's Kids obviously, but in addition they are too old to be his children. We know Mario is in his 20s and Bowser is only slightly older. Well the it's established Roy is old enough to attend night classes making him an adult. Also, when I'm posting this. "We won't be seeing another Mario and Luigi game for awhile." Nintendo be like....

There was a few details you missed. You were talking about non main Mario titles featuring the Koopalings and you mentioned Yoshi's Safari and Hotel Mario. However you forgot Mario is Missing; which is also Luigi's FIRST solo game predating Luigi's Mansion. Also to my knowledge the Koopalings originally got their names from the combination of Koopa and hatchlings; implying they're Bowser children. They were referred to as his children in Super Mario Bros 3(game and cartoon series), Super Mario World, and; the one you missed, Super Smash Bros Melee; I'm assuming that was the LAST time they were referred to as Bowser's children. Later as Koopalings their name make up got changed as a combination of the words Koopa and siblings; implying that although they are NOT Bowser's children, they are all related. Finally their name sakes of Koopalings got changed for a final time as it currently is a combination of the words Koopa and underlings; implying they just work for Bowser, but aren't his children. Also it's rumored Bowser Jr. is based off of Koopa Kid from the Mario Party series. After Mario Party 3 this character was replaced by Bowser Jr in all future projects; including remakes of older versions because Bower Jr didn't exist yet. Oh and I think Bowser Jr in Mario and Luigi PIT was an older version of Baby Bowser and NOT Bowser Jr, but who knows. Sorry that was a lot. I believe the Koopalings were basically ret-gone in the n64 era, a little like most of the Super Mario Bros 1 lore (like the Koopa tribe being known for their black magic, their black magic that helped them to turn the mushroom people into stones, bricks, and horse-hair plants, Peach getting kidnapped because she is the only one who can undo the spell...). Because Bowser Jr got introduced when the Koopalings weren't supposed to reappear ever again outside of the Super Mario Bros 3 and World ports, he became the heir. Meanwhile, Bowser went from a villain as terrifying as a demon to a much friendlier villain (Character development?). When the Koopalings finally reappeared in the first Mario & Luigi game and then in New Super Mario Bros Wii, Nintendo couldn't retcon Bowser Jr's relationship with Bowser. So instead, they just work for Bowser, no family ties. Anything we learn outside of the games themselves can get retconned.

Nah the only retcon in Mario is the Koopalings being Bowser's kids. The Koopa Kingdom being known for their black magic wasn't retconned whatsoever, Bowser still uses magic on multiple occasions throughout the games such as in Mario Odyssey where he summons boulders, clones his hat and creates a shield around him when Mario goes to attack him, or in Mario Galaxy where Bowser teleports away after losing, plus in the Mario party games Bowser uses magic every 7 minutes. And how do you think Dry Bones exist? Also Bowser wasn't a demonic villain- He didn't even speak yet in the games, he couldn't be demonic if he didn't have any personality back in the day lol. He just LOOKED demonic. But the first time he does speak and show a personality, in Mario 64, the way he speaks in that game shows he's the same Bowser as in the RPG games. He wasn't demonic, he just didn't have any personality yet and looked evil.

The Koopalings should be the children of a Koopa Lady whom Bowser dated in the 90's. They have since broken up, perhaps driven by Bowser's pursuit of Princess Peach. The actual baby daddy of the Koopalings would be a "semi-employed" DJ/guitar player, hence why most named after musicians.

If that was the case,the Koopalings wouldn't call Bowser "lord".. It's sad, but the Koopalings simply aren't Bowser's kids. Maybe they're kids Bowser adopted to train as MINIONS in his army, but the way he treats them in paper jam and Jr Journey shows they aren't his kids to him. If Bowser saw them as his kids he wouldn't have punched Iggy in Jr Journey for example.

I always considered the Koopalings as just eccentric boombooms who got into favor with Bowser after acting as his kids for the Super Mario Bros. 3 stage play Like am I really the only person to connect the lines this way? That they're Bowser's "kids" in the third game because it was a stage play and we can chalk it up to eccentric storywriting on whoever Mushroom Kingdom citizen wrote the play? I still think Bowser Jr. was a bad idea for a character and is vastly overused, him overshadowing and effectively replacing seven versatile and variant looking minibosses is even worse. Sure they can be adopted since Bowser's never shown with a wife, but they can't just suddenly _not_ be his kids!
