The problem is NOT everyone could charge home. For those of us living in a flats we need a large batteries as to let allow us to get throughout the week commute (300-400 miles) with one full charge over the weekend while doing my shopping. Smaller battery and frequently charging (public charger) is no go for me.
@MrDAVIDATKIN15 күн бұрын
I agree it is more difficult and expensive for the 40% of people that can't home charge. This is where local councils should step up and ensure there is plenty of on street charging at sensible prices. Another option would be workplace charging, my nephew get his charged up for £1 at work, a great way to retain staff.
@GruffSillyGoat15 күн бұрын
There seems to be an upswing of focus on the 30% (varies by region) of households who cannot charge at home, an analysis from a few years back showed that the preferred method by drivers was on-street charging for those living in densely packed terraced housing and local fast/rapid charging the preference for those living in flats. There is a focus, in both central and local government to increase the access (simplify the process) for gully and on-street/lamp-post charging for the terrace group, and driving up the rollout of localised destination and rapid/ultra-rapid charging for the flat group, including incentives. There is also a push by EV driver organisations to establish a 'right to charge' similar to that implemented in other countries, to replace the barriers present for renters and leaseholders for installing their own chargers or using the schemes/incentives available (such as the subsidiised installation of chargers for flat owners). The latest government analysis (24th Dec) shows the range of needing on-street/public charging varies between 24% and 36% of households by region, in England the urban peak is now 32%, of which 16% have access to charging within five minutes of their home. A key barrier remains charging cost, which although is cheaper than fossil-fuels when using EV charging membership discounts is still significantly higher than that of home charging; again driving organisations are seeking for the VAT element to be lowered to the same as home charging.
@MrDAVIDATKIN15 күн бұрын
@GruffSillyGoat I agree with what you've said, the only thing I slightly disagree with is that memberships for EV charging is cheaper than fossil fuels. I would say as an EV driver who occasionally uses memberships that they are comparable with current fossil fuel costs. An example would be Ionity passport, one of the best out there in my opinion that gives a rate of 43p kWh. At this time of year my car returns 3.3miles kWh or 13p a mile, also that hasn't factored in the £10.50 a month membership.
@GruffSillyGoat15 күн бұрын
@@MrDAVIDATKIN - I based my statement on the average petrol mpg, which is 36mpg in the UK (source: NimbleFins) and average UK petrol cost £1.36 (source: RAC). The average EV does 3.4 miles/kWh or 4.2 miles/kWh for long-range EVs (source: EV database). The petrol £1.36 equates to a charging price of 60p per kW or lower for an average EV (71p or lower for a long-range EV). These are higher rates than membership based charging rates even factoring the membership fee into the calculation. For the 7,600 average UK annual mileage, 633 miles per month, this equates to £109 per month for petrol and £91 per month for Ionity including the £11 monthly membership; the petrol car would refuel twice and the EV would top up two to three times depending upon the battery size. Of course for ICE there is the regret cost of two thirds of the energy purchased being lost to waste.

@@MrDAVIDATKIN Local council charging is not a problem in London but the time limit. Those are either slow chargers but still 2 hours limit or in case of the lamp posts charging strictly Residential Permit only places. I got plenty of public charges around where I live in London but all of them 2 hours stay limit or till vehicle is charged. I have no time to charge and be around the car / loose time as to remove the car when charged during the working week. That is why I had mentioned that 400-500 miles on single charge is a min for people like me. Living in flat and no work place charging. With this range I would fully charge over the weekend while shopping and then good to go for over the week. Anything less would require me to charge midd week or often therefore increase of my working time if I can not go home after work. So I am looking forward the new TY whit its rumoured 400 miles range.

Hello Happy new year Just one thing I would like to say is don’t rely on one pedal driving this because you may need to do a emergency stop and if you not used the brake for some time you will take longer to stop as the rust on the disc will make it less efficient, also the brake could scene’s up with no use. If you wish to use one pedal use the brake s bit each time you go out to keep them working.
@GruffSillyGoat15 күн бұрын
A lot of EVs address this issue by using the brakes rather than regen periodically when using one pedal driving. Some like Kias have a brake disc maintenance function, reminding drivers to use the brake pedal before engaging iPedal mode.

Another point in favour of the BYD Dolphin is the PCP rates. This negalres any worries about residuals (which are always a worry in a relatively new market, which is evloving si quickly). £289 deposit, £289 a month on 8k miles a year over 4 years blows anything else I've seen out of the water. Oh, and 3 years free servicing too! I bought mine from DM Keith in Grimsby, who were helpful and efficient, and a long standing local dealer, even if the brand is new to the uk. Maybe we could have a video comparing pcp offers of ICE vs EV cars in the future, as for most people this is the way we will fund our next car...

A friend of mine lives in a perfectly nice little 80's estate where practically every house cannot have a home charge point. Cars are garaged elsewhere with no electrical connection. It was designed like that to improve the outlook of the estates housing arrangements that was promoting to good effect grassed outlooks with no off street parking anywhere near the house. Insurance costs: Not that different from any other car. 2nd hand value: Depreciation is around the same as a ICE car, less in some cases. Availability of spares: Unless it's a car new to the market there's no issue, in the future they get broken for parts the same as any other car & many new parts are backwards compatible. (Try finding engine bearings for a 10 year old Nissan Duke however..) Warranty: Most of the 'new' Chinese companies have been around for years, just not in the UK market. Electronics lifespan: Are you sure it's only 5 years? There are plenty of 2010 Nissan Leafs on the road, look under the bonnet of any car produced in the last 30 years, there's an ECU controlling it. Some date back to the 80's & still start first time. Climate change? Initially they are not great for the climate then every mile they reduce their impact, ICE cars do not.
