im really happy that my partner found the bear one for me and thought of me because i said i wanted to try crocheting again. HOWEVER, even with my bare basic knowledge, the hook drove me up the wall. also the directions were god awful for my brain. i had to look up someone actually making it here on youtube for me to understand what the directions were talking about. on the plus side, i learned a lot about myself and my style. -learned that i work better with written out directions as opposed to a diagram -it really DID push me into doing more crocheting, specifically amigurumi. it makes my adhd brain stay focused and motivated on the project -i seriously dislike slip stitches for things like this. makes no sense to me tbh and i can always tell where the seam is im really glad that experienced people like yourself are confirming that it wasn't me and that it's the kit.

My favorite part was when you were rocking out to Hamilton 😂 the one yellow spike and random spot had me laughing and I hate how the dollar tree instructions have the graph and written portions with the gray background! Like, save some money on ink, and write good instructions. I feel bad for all the children who have gotten these kits and have been disappointed and confused ☹️

My 5th grader told me that part was cringe lol. But I have to start letting my goofy side out now that I’m getting more used to being on camera lol. When I went back to the dollar store yesterday all the kits were gone so I’m sure there are lots of disappointed people in my town lol.

Oh, you got enough backings for your eyes. My kit was missing one. I did a review of the dog pattern. Those charts are so hard to read! The dog had color changes, and it was so hard to see the difference in color with their 5 point type!

Oh no! So you had to have a one eyed dog. Poor doggies haha. The charts are SO silly. Do you get why they even decided to do charts instead of just instructions?

@@Tfwcrochet The patterns were probably produced overseas... Charts are universal, so no issue with language. And I have a well-stocked craft corner, so I was able to supply the missing piece. I also used my own crochet hook, as the plastic on had such a rough surface, it constantly snagged the yarn.

I definitely love the extra spikes on yours. I do think the green in the kit is better than the dark green too. Definitely pros & cons to both

Charts like that are rather common in Japanese amigurumi so I didnt find it off putting at all. Maybe these were from a Daiso kit that was localized into English.

I would assume so. I never really learned from a chart. I think it’d be fine to include it but also include written instructions as well. But that’s maybe harder to translate?

Yeah, I saw "chart" and thought "I wonder if this pattern originated in Japan or similar" because charts are really common over there for both knitting and crochet. Tbh, a chart doesn't really strike me as inherently "not for beginners". It's just different. I can't speak for this chart, it's hard to see on my phone, but I think in general a pattern is gonna be a lot of manual decoding for a new crocheter to begin with

I went to a DT kind of far from where I live and they had each kit in stock however I didn't want to buy each one and waste materials, I found the unicorn and bunny and honestly they turned out really cute. The unicorn being the better looking toy but I can see more beginners getting a great result out of the bunny kit since there is minimal sewing involved.

I agree with the felt too at the $1 🌳 it’s super thin but yours is way cuter!! I’ve never used the yarn from there though. I’m going to give it a try.

Last time I was at my dollar tree, they did actually have 4oz bags of crafter's square stuffing and it's actually incredibly soft! Felt like touching a baby bunny, though it doesn't really grip to itself very well, so not actually the best texture for stuffing amis.

I generally like darker greens, but the green that came with the kit fit better! I’m happy I saw this video- while I haven’t had success with yarn at my dollar tree, I know I would have grabbed the kit and been really upset 😬

It is actually just a boppy pillow. It is meant for breast feeding but I use it for crochet! I got mine second hand.

I think you could always use Friench Knots for the eyes. Maybe a group of 3 in black and one of white in the center.

My idea to get the best of both the kit and other supplies from dollar tree is buy the kit and get other yarn and a better hook if you can find them then make the creation!! Well thats what I would do. I found your channel recently and wanted to comment.

I did this one first! Shannon sent me the kits she had! I have about the same opinion and review as you. The eyes were nice and the stuffing was super soft too but the hook 🙅🏻‍♀️🙅🏻‍♀️and the needle too was terrible.

Only crochet supplies I would get from the dollar tree are the stitch markers and the Premier Yarn, other than that, absolutely not. Stitch markers are stitch markers, and theirs are fine and they are way cheaper with a lot more in them, and Premier makes pretty good yarn. I saw the kits once, but I didn't have the money, and I kinda wanted to try the needle felting one, but they were out of stock of those and I was still broke lol.

I saw the needle felting kits. I have always wanted to try needle felting but I don’t know if I trust the dollar store kits to be a good way to learn lol. I have never seen stitch markers there! That would be a good place to get them.

I've never seen charts used in sold or free amigurumi patterns, only on things that can be put flat, like clothes or granny squares. For amigurumis that aren't equal on all sides, like, more shaped stuff, they could be nice. But beginner? not so much. Like, it would be so easy to put written instructions AND the graphs, so if you don't get one you can try to understand the other.
