@BrKnOblivion7 жыл бұрын
@JayzTwoCents - There's a lot more you can do from an undervolting perspective. Seeing as it's a custom PCB, flashing with a stock AMD BIOS may not work so we'll skip that part. Currently I'm running a stock AMD RX Vega64 black (not special edition) and running much lower voltages than expected and hitting high 1500's purely because I have high ambient temps (30+C). I know I can extend my car past 1700 MHz core but that's not the aim. The aim is reliable and fast clocks with the temp target at roughly 65 C. Personally I'd put the target at 60C so when it boosts past it a little when the fans ramp up then it won't pass 65 C as there's a ~20% HBM performance loss above 65 C and that just gets worse as you saw with the STRIX card. So for numbers, currently I'm running 1750MHz for P7 core state with 950mv P7 voltage. Running 1667 MHz P6 state with 900mv P6 voltage. HBM is set to 1000MHz and 900mv with fans set to max for benchmarking and a min start at 1200rpm for normal mode. Temp targets are 70 C Max and 65 C Target, though normal mode is 65 C Max and 60 C Target. Power target with stock BIOS is between +10% and +20% and wattage draw for the card should be targeted to be below 220W. Once you have something in that range that's stable (with those settings you are voltage throttling the OC and shouldn't really hit anything above 1580MHz) you can start adjusting the P6 and P7 clock states to suit requirements and start pushing the envelope a bit. In the end though any temps above ~65 C lose performance and this card really prefers to be under water rather than on air.

I play consoles and PC, but I'd say Nintendo is the only Console design these days that have what non-ARM PCs can never have. Raspberry Pi is a ARM PC, so that a build that rivals Switch' s adaptability using it won't count. Sony and Microsoft are practically trying to be like PCs , though Microsoft XBox is designed to utilize its own DirectX technologies for games.

I got a Gigabyte Vega 64 air. I quickly slapped a EKWB block on it. Then I updated the firmware to Water. I feel I hit an average lottery, My core will hit around 1762 stable with no additional voltage (other than 50% MPL) and the Ram hits 1060 stable at a lower voltage of 920. The card quickly becomes unstable beyond 1777mhz core and 1100mhz ram, though, my processor Bclk of 103.3 COULD be causing instability because everything attached to the board becomes overclocked to some point and being that I have HBCC enabled and Vega uses infinity fabric like my R7 1700X, it's possibly talking faster than normal. If you want a Vega, and I mean REALLY want it, the only way to go is water cool it, because the difference in real life is night and day- cost be damned.

Regarding your Pascal comment; I've had the same experience! On an Acer Nitro 5 laptop with 4GB 1050 Ti (LOCKED voltage and power settings) I was still able to boost the core clock 200MHz and the memory clock 800MHz on stock voltage. In-game it's a super stable 1860MHz core and 2152MHz memory. Despite what I've heard about the Nitro 5 having heat issues, I'm witnessing a MAX of 65C under load with the GPU after several hours of gaming and the clocks speeds never fluctuate due to thermal throttling. Combined with a CPU undervolt and enabling Cool Boost (fan profile), it performs really well for a budget laptop! Love your vids Jay, I always learn so much. Getting back into the PC scene after nearly 15 year hiatus.

There are a few things i want to add: 1: With 8xAA Vega is frond-end limited you. You can also see it when you check power draw at the wall. It will be lower with 4x/8x AA vs 0 or 2x. 2: Vega also boosts according to voltage: Fictional example 1600MHz max boost on 900mv i get +-1350MHz on 1100mv i will get 1475MHz (if it is not hitting any power or temp limits) 3: check GPU-Z for the applied voltage (if the voltage readout is the same as the referenced cards) When your clocks on stock setting where dropping i think the voltage was also dropping and you where hitting a TDP limit. Its true lower voltages can give you beter performance but that because the card wont hit limits that fast and it will take longer to heat up. With 1200mv spikes it will hit limits fast. If you limit the max to 1100 it will take longer. But even at 1100mv you will see the card go down even further with heavy load. And undervolting only really happens when you go to 900mv currently lower is not possible it will still read 900 (sometimes it it shows 870mv and power draw is lower but i cannot duplicate the results/settings yet to make it work all the time). But refferenced cards on balanced: the card will go down to 950-1050mv quite a lot.

Now-(EVGA 1080TI Black dual fan model) -Semi unpleasant experiences 1-R9 380 Strix from Asus (4Gb). 2-R9 270 from Powercolor (2Gb). -Asus performed a bit better (less screen tearing and such) out the 2 and was newer tech...i suppose that was an advantage. The R9 380 is great budget card when found for around $100 However both cards overclocked like garbage and the ASUS actually would often crash more than Powercolor, but performed with less issues at stock. PNY and Biostar I would be afraid to try as they are used to covering lower end and my trust with them ends there.

I'm running a Reference Air V64 with EK waterblock and an MSI Liquid V64 Bios, holds 1700-1706mhz range in games all day with +50% power target and no other tweaks. Glad I didn't bother waiting for aftermarket cards.

@mumin847 жыл бұрын
With current mining craze, you can. Just sell your 480 and buy vega, or even 1080Ti, if you can sell it right. 1080Ti is not that good for miners, so the price is still reasonable, unlike the 480, which is the best mining card right now (and therefore you can sell it for a very good price).
@youtuberobbedmeofmyname7 жыл бұрын
Mining craze is over. Prices already plummetted. Too much competition to sell on ebay rn. You must be repeating shit you've heard because only two months ago I would say its worth it to sell. Not anymore. Things change.
@mumin847 жыл бұрын
+falt I sold my two R9 290 (that I bought in 2014) two weeks ago for $450 total, then I sold 1 ETH I mined with them for 380. Sure, the craze is over.
@jakegarrett81097 жыл бұрын
You can actually buy GTX 1060 for under $200 on Newegg, that's a sign the mining craze is going down. Its not down all the way though, but its finally getting a bit better for gamers. The 480 (if its 4gb) is about $280 used (checked a week ago), and the 8gb version is more. Its still rather pricey, so if you want to sell it to upgrade, sell it now and survive a month or 2 on an old card if you have one.

Jake Garrett the lowest priced 1060 6GB card is 265 still. You probably saw the 3GB model which miners don't want

My Sapphire nitro+ vega 64 loves undervolting. 1050mv on core sustained clocks of between 1570-1625 with occasional spikes of up to 1675. Samsumg hbm running stock voltages, but clocked to 1050. Power consumption lower than stock in 'performance mode' with noticibly better performance. Never go over 45% fan speed and edge temp stays under 65c. Was nervous I'd have some buyers remorse over navi launch but considering partner cards aren't very available yet, I'm getting close to same performance per $ but many months sooner which makes it a win in my book.

When I first got my old Gigabyte Windforce II 1GB GTX460SEv1, at first it did not like to overclock. But, after a few revisions in drivers, and working it up slowly, letting it burn in a little, it ended up over clocking very well, out-performing quite a few EVGA and ASUS OC design cards, which came with a higher clock and more CUDA cores! So what I'm saying is sometimes to get better results, it's best to allow a small burn-in cycle and up it slowly over the course of a few days to achieve those higher results

So bored with Vega now...Total snooze fest of a card...Enough of last year's performance already...Yawn!!
@jdrok50267 жыл бұрын
MayDay GoingDown!! Well check out buildzoids stuff on Vega or any other stuff I mean he murders the cards but you get to see what Vega really likes I mean it's still probably way to power limited to beat a ln2 1080ti but it and Vega 56 crush the 1080
@maydaygoingdown56027 жыл бұрын
jdr ok yeah I'm just bored of looking at it's benchmarks... it's nothing I haven't already seen 2 years ago when the 1080 launched. Just a boring performer already. I find that the RX 56 is more interesting than RX64 really, just because it can match a 64 with bios etc...at least that's a bit more interesting than looking at Nvidias 2 years old performance today. I still think the RX 56 is simply a binned 64 though.
@jdrok50267 жыл бұрын
MayDay GoingDown!! The 64 is probably more limited by power then the 56 which would explain why a 56 can steam roll a 1080 overclocked and some have even show a 56 steam rolling a overclocked 1080 because amd would be stupid to give Vegas buyers access to control everything while I'm sure everyone would love that because Vega is much stronger then the 1080 core and even on ln2 is apparently power limited still as far as I've hear but I'm thinking amd is literally trying to do something weird idk Vega is very power hungry being able to pull 400-600 watts of power and some have recorded clocks of 1800 plus and still going and if you overclock it right will just sit there and not move maxing out its power limit idk what amd did but Vega is a monster but we didn't need a monster that needs ln2 and 2 1600 watt psu and a lot of bios mods to control everything to really unlock I think we need something that was a competitive card that can actually compete in games not just workstation stuff
@jdrok50267 жыл бұрын
Sorry for grammar I want Vega to be able to be good but if navi is its successor Radeon needs to get the power consumption down and Vega performance but more hopefully but I would take less power and a Vega like performance because Jesus Vega is a fun card to watch as it just keeps going but I think amd needs another 7970 where they are just on top but right now I'm just waiting to buy 2 Vegas most likely a 64 and a 56 and water cooling them on a threadripper or a i9 depnding on when I get the Vegas but I would love a 1080ti to but right now I have cars to build and they are eating into the computer fund even tho the computer is being built for a dual injection system for a engine build lol
@maydaygoingdown56027 жыл бұрын
jdr ok yeah I agree, if we go back 8 months ago we were all expecting Vega 64 to be a monster easily beating a 1080ti for the same price or even less. We all seen that AMD marketing ploy of "poor Volta" and got stiff dicks...or was that just me:)... Anyways...After all the waiting...delays...hype...we find out it's basically a 2 years old 1080....Sigh!! Before launch I watched a few leaked benchmarks of its gaming performance compared to 1080 at stock and 1080 overclocked (average overclock nothing special)...it lost out to the overclocked 1080 by quite a bit in AMD titles so I knew their and then that Vega wasn't isn't for me. I was gutted to be honest...i didn't want the high temps and high power draw either...it would have meant I would also have to buy a new PSU to accommodate it and that meant spending more than an Asus Strix oc 1080ti. So rather than spend that on Vega 64 or liquid 64 I purchased the Asus Strix oc 1080ti as this meant not only I have a much faster cooler and less power hungry card but I didn't need to spend extra on a new PSU. I'm very glad I did now, I made the right choice and that was just before Vega launched so I got it before all the mining prices hikes.

Did you buy the card yourself? You made AMD look bad but never apologized about being horribly wrong!
@jakegarrett81097 жыл бұрын
What was he wrong about? Its not bad reviewing if he was correct. If he was correct, he will need to do an update vid. From everything I've seen, Vega is currently a bad idea for gaming, but its totally worth it for mining (even the RX 470 is 2x what it cost a year ago, prices are crazy). That doesn't make it a bad card, just a bad price *for gaming*, right now. For mining, the thing is a monster beating literally everything Nvidia has, and its only like $500-600. In a year, they may be super cheap, and a great deal for gamers, in 2 years they may be a bargain from a flood of old mining cards. Its all price dependent. He has no reason to apologize if nothing is incorrect, that's the point of a reviewer, to let people know what to expect. I would be really upset if I expected something more and got less (why I never pre-order anything, I want to know what I'm getting).
@T51B17 жыл бұрын
He was wrong about the whole AMD launch pricing thing. That's when he made the "I no longer recommend Radeon" or w/e BS tweet. Not sure if that tweet is still up, IIRC he deleted it.
@jakegarrett81097 жыл бұрын
Well then he should do an update then called, "economics 101, supply and demand".
@frankopanklaric7 жыл бұрын
Jake Garrett But he wasn't wrong. Amd did mislead us into thinkkng we could fet their cards for 100 bucks cheaper.
@jakegarrett81097 жыл бұрын
+K-plus tunjevina MSRP is just suggested selling price. Retailers can sell if for whatever they want (just like cars are sometimes over or under MSRP, its all about supply and demand). For instance, the RX 480 is still MSRP at $200, but that doesn't mean you can find one used at that price. Usually at launch they go a little over MSRP anyways, but this mining situation is massively different than a typical scenario, so it really screws up all the pricing. You can't bl aim AMD for miners buying these up as soon as any are in stock, they are just a great card at a really good price for mining.

there are always variations in output from any manufacturing process, in silicon manufacturing the manufacturers will perform performance checks which will allow them to charge a premium price for the better performing parts. the net result of all of this - the silicon lottery can create a higher proportion of different grades of devices
