Are Degrassi Seasons 1-7 The Best?

I agree with you! I love earlier seasons but get bored with the Mia/Darcy/Peter/Danny/Derek era. And when the OG cast goes to college. But I love when Holly J, Sav, Anya become seniors. And of course I love Fiona Eli Ali Drew Bianca time period too.

To me Season 1 and 2 felt the like the heart of degrassi. The whole cast use to interact or were used in some way like at the end of season 1 episode "jagged little pill" where ashely takes ecstasy. The whole cast is at her house. We started to see less and less of that by season 3. Also anyone else notice Ashley was the most important character of season 1 besides Emma? In later seasons its like she never even had happened.

I agree, I think ashleys character was supposed to take a back seat in like 2 and 3 bc she was mentally over degrassi but later on she felt so useless as a character. Especially in season 6/7. They kinda did her dirty.

For me, yes! I think Seasons 1-7 perfectly illustrate why the brand of Degrassi is soo good..it felt REAL. The issues that they were dealing with felt age-appropriate, by that I mean the characters always acted their age. The actors also looked their age...the casting was well done. Seasons 10-12 were good, but it felt more like American teen dramas. Over-dramatic, not a lot of development, and sometimes felt like things were done strictly for shock value.

YES. The 'blaze' episode was just WTF for me. I wish Emma hadn't ruined their personal development for wanting to keep everyone together. And she and Liberty were never close anyway, especially after what happened with Chris and Damien. Emma was a friend sabotager.

I am so glad you talked about season 7 being bad because I remember wanting to dropped the show all together because they would just make the dumbest plot lines ever. The whole college era of the characters was bad and I wish imo they just let the characters go once they graduated because anything from 7-9 with the original characters was a nightmare.

I felt they should have created their own show with the college kids and only have them on degrassi when they interact with characters still in high school. There was potential then paige college break down story is one of the best written storylines ever. I know many people that went through exactly what paige went through.

I actually started watching Degrassi about 2 years ago and I only watched the first 7 seasons with Emma’s classmates and I would only rewatch those episodes and convince myself that the later season episodes were horrible, and then I was always seeing all the different types of characters and seasons being advertised on social media and after like a year I was finally convinced to give the later seasons with Clare and Maya’s classmates a chance . So I did and then I spent like 2-3 weeks binge watching season 8-14 then I watched seasons 1-4 of Next Class and I was extremely impressed❤.

I think why people hold seasons 1-7 in such high regard is because these seasons where carried by the OG cast of the show. But once they all left Degrassi by that I mean the school and not the show, their characters became less interesting. Also I feel people didn’t connect with the graduation class after 06 because we didn’t have the time to see them grow as most of them brought in their Junior year.

One thing that always bugged me was that Emma and friends were literally middle schoolers when they came to Degrassi but then really quickly they changed the school to be a high school. I think they should have just let Degrassi be a 7-12 school. That way we COULD have had those years, especially with Claire's and Maya's group.

the way that show handled suicide changed my entire perspective on the subject. i’ve seen a lot of videos compare the way 13 Reasons Why handled suicide versus Degrassi Next Generation and i can’t help but wonder why they never talked about the OG Degrassi. i think that show handled it even better. i’ve never seen that topic handled with so much nuance and it’s crazy that it came from a “kids” show. in 13RW, hannah’s suicide shook the entire school and everybody felt sorry for her… that’s not always the reality. and Degrassi showed us that. the episode ends with Joey telling Caitlin that it’s not her fault and she shouldn’t feel bad for his decision to commit. Claude obviously had issues, but the fact that he would leave a note for Caitlin basically blaming her for his suicide was horrible. my point is, suicide doesn’t always garner sympathy. you don’t stay in people’s minds, especially when you do it for such a cold-blooded reason. once you’re gone, you’re gone. i just love that Degrassi showed the negatives of suicide rather than glamorize it and put that person on a pedestal. they showed the reality of the situation and i wouldn’t be surprised if that saved some lives. that’s why i’ll always love Degrassi, the earlier shows and seasons had a message behind them and they were the first show to do that.

I agree with 3-5 being the best written. On my last couple of rewatches I skipped most of season 1-2. (Though those seasons will always have a special place in my heart. They aren't the best written. I think 10-12 are really strong seasons. I think they also were too focused on specific characters where it didn't allow others to shine. I also agree I liked when they just had moments of being teenagers at school because it felt more relatable Emma getting her first period in class or Manny joining the cheerleading squad and Emma's jealousy rather than Clare having baby daddy drama or gang fights at the school play. While it's fun to watch drama it's good to have some nuance to keep the story grounded. I also think next class had some great moments that often gets overlooked.

@@EazyRocko that's true. I forgot about Craigs abuse storyline was in the first episodes of season 2. All those plots you mentioned were important and powerful. I just don't remember much of anything else that happened and Marco's coming out story in season 2 was outshined by Pride. Paige singing Poor Thing to her abuser will always be iconic. I thought the cultural identity episode happened in season 3 for some reason, while that was a good episode it is a shame it was never brought up again in any capacity.

I grew up sneaking to watch 1-7 as a kid and preteen. By the time I was in high school season 8 started and I felt more connected to them. 10-12 are top tier drama and laughs. I rewatched it as an adult and Holly J and Fiona had me hooked to the screen. Their stories are so strong and Holly J to me has the most power out of ALL Degrassi characters. She really was the ONE!

I'm pretty sure even the writers realized that the university storylines weren't working. The only one I really liked was the Paige 2-parter. It was so realistic to have a high achiever in high school completely melt down in university. Seasons 2-6 were maybe the best. Season 7 wasn't great, but it did give me my favourite Degrassi couple, Manny and Jay. I loved later seasons too though. I'm just obsessed 😁

i think the earlier seasons also had more of a gritty realistic tone..in the later seasons the atmosphere is always sunny and bright far fewer cloudy overcast days and the characters all start looking a little too perfect i remember getting into degrassi when i was finishing HS i binged the show and in the later seasons even then i was like oh no these characters all look like clothes models in a target commercial but in seasons 1-7 everybody resembled people that i went to school with it was actually really jarring

The University stories are boring, yes. The class right after the original is much less developed or interesting, yes. The next, next class is much better, and more developed, of course. All that said: underground cage match, international super-rich kids, everyone in the school with mental illnesses, drug trafficking, prostitution, etc. etc. etc. They go from a basically realistic drama starring real kids to a worse-than-soap opera starring much older kids. I'm not saying it's bad as I really like the 3rd set with Claire and Allie and all them, but it's still much worse by way of a total break from reality. That said, Sav is best boy.

i think the main reason degrassi “fell off” after season 7 was their decision to focus so heavily on clare and eli. you could argue that emma was the main protagonist of the earlier seasons but all of the characters got screen time and some of them had really good storylines. the show wasn’t about emma, it was about degrassi. once clare grew up she became the forefront of the show and i don’t think her character was written well enough for that. like why did the entire school care so much about clare? it just didn’t make sense to me. the earlier seasons felt so realistic because everyone was caught up in their own lives and didn’t worry too much about everyone else. you had episodes like “time stands still” that really brought the cast together but the majority of the time was spent with individual groups. i think degrassi worked so well because there wasn’t really a main character. once clare and eli got together, that all changed. i just didn’t buy it anymore. nobody cares that much about one person/couple in high school. looking back, it was bound to happen at some point. there’s only so many storylines and character types you can have in one show so i think they saw the reaction to eli and clare and ran with it. it’s a shame because i never really cared for clare🤣 she never interested me.

Agreed. One thing I would mention is the transition period from Season 8 and 9 to 10, which is when the relationship is introduced between Eli and Clare. Those two seasons, 8 and 9 were absolute GARBAGE. They really didn't know what to do at all. They spent too much time on Mia's character in Season 8 and after Mia left after the Meth incident with Peter in Season 9, Peter's story basically ended even after getting back into the band. Not that I am a huge fan of Peter, but he was one of the only ones left from Season 5 onwards. Darcy had so much development in Season 7 only for her to leave after the 1st episode of Season 8. Same thing happened to Mia, spent a lot of time developing her in Season 8 only for her to leave after the 2nd episode of Season 9. It basically wasted potential to build other characters. Don't get me started on useless characters like Blue, who was the most generic character in the whole show to be part of the main cast. Introduced in Season 8, left early Season 9. Was a waste of space, the Holly J storyline didn't work out with him and he was a creep staring at the girls at cheerleading practice. That's literally all he did. Don't get me started on Degrassi Takes Manhattan at the end of season 9. That was terrible writing, in fact the whole Jane cheating on Spinner with Declan storyline was garbage and the way it came out and Spinner found out about it was also stupid, overhearing several feet away from a tent at a loud outdoor party (where it should be too loud to overhear), why would Holly J and Jane just casually talk about it, you would think Holly J would drop it especially since she was with Declan. The whole plot was off, it felt out of character for Jane to cheat with a guy like Declan especially after what she and Spinner been through, then have Spinner find out long after Jane stopped and Declan moved on with Holly J. To make it even more unrealistic, Emma and Spinner had no chemistry or history in the 9 seasons they've been on the show and all of a sudden they're in love and want to get married after that dumb plot after the first intimate conversation they ever had, along with the dumb plot of the Dot burning down because of a stupid sandwich toaster that other employees must have used before without any issue while Spinner wasn't there. There are far too many plotholes, it made us fans feel absolutely stupid and I will always resent the writers for that. It's like they gave up and put together this movie last minute by the time the season was coming to an end without caring about it.

In my opinion seasons 3-6 are probably the best. The original cast had come into their own as far as acting and the story lines were some of the most realistic and impactful that the series had to offer. Once Paige/Marco/Ellie went to college I feel like they lost some momentum but it wasn't terrible. Seasons 8 and 9 are a mess and it was clear they stumbled with the massive change in cast members and had no idea how to wrap up Manny and Emma. 10-12 start veering into unrealistic territory, but I love them and think they were well done. Seasons 13 and 14 are the worst in the entire history of Degrassi, outside of Next Class.

For me, nothing will beat the rush of season 10 and 11. But that's also my generation, when I was starting high school and felt like I was growing up with those characters. Seasons 1-7 are classic, 8 and 9 are kinda meh but transitional, 10-12 was the high point for me, and then 13-14 and Next Class were still good but starting to feel slightly past my time. I'll always love any Degrassi though

1-3 will always be superior. The show picked up momentum again by the END of season 6, 7 was enjoyable to watch, but I always find myself forcing to get through 8 &9 now, just so I can get to 10 (hardcore Eli fan here 🙋🏻‍♀️) I can honestly say though, as an OG fan, like watching season 1 episodes premier on Noggin, if Eli never came about, I probably would have given up on Degrassi, which would have sucked, because the cam storyline was one of the best storylines ever on degrassi. They did something different and they did something right. When JT died, we barely got to see how people grieved his death (the liberty and Toby crap should have never happened) when cam died, we got to see how it affected a lot of people in very very different ways. I think season 12 carried all those later classes

My personal opinion as to why the original cast tends to resonate better than the later ones is because they are kids first, actor second, and soap actors last as far as their characters go. Later on, you get characters who feel ripped straight out of other shows like Declan, Darcy, Zoe, and Tristan after he lost the weight, so that sense of authenticity suffers. You can tell by Tristan's dialogue in later seasons what the producers priorities were. Somewhere along the way the kids stopped feeling like students I would have gone to school with, so the mandate of meeting kids where they're at seemed to disappear. The priority seems to be keeping up with temporary shows like Awkward or Zoey 101.

I think the pacing in the early season was so different and raw and authentic. I think because it was similarly shot camera wise and intimacy wise as degrassi junior high. When it got super modern and on the nose with trends and predicts bake characters specially leading up to the next class seasons it really lost its depth to me. I made a few degrassi review videos on my channel too. I started with next class and planned on working my way back to the OG seasons but I honestly got exhausted & lost brain cells after rewatching anything past season 11

100% there are a shitload of people who only like the early seasons because of Drake. The hilarious part is most of those people were in kindergarten when Jimmy got shot. As somebody who has been watching since before The Zit Remedy cut their first demo, and started watching TNG because i actually knew who Emma was, it makes me upset. But, whatever gets eyes on the show I guess. And I totally agree with the talking video's opinion; the show started to go south with the college stories and it got better once the OGs were finally laid to rest and the NEW next generation were given the full spotlight. And of course, the dead weight characters like Blue Cheese and Leia got weeded out. Some of the later seasons had great stuff.

I think some of it was just the audience aging too. I was in 6th grade when the first season came out. As the original cast aged and graduated, so did I. As a college student I didn’t have much interest in watching storylines about freshman anymore nor were the episodes easily available in America due to limited streaming options and slow internet.

Some grand points made here! Imo peak Degrassi is S2-4, after that is some ups and downs until we once again reach absolute peak again in S12. Then fall harshly from grace in S13-14. (Next Class Season 3 was really good but those seasons are all too short just in general.)

*only because you mentioned watching next class* I like a lot of seasons of next generation and a couple episodes of next class. I think next class had some good storylines that next generation missed because of the time(I.e. no one was checking for immigrant or muslim storylines and that’s really sad). To be fair to both series, some episodes/seasons just feel like filler because you’re waiting to see how degrassi “goes there.” But the filler episodes only intensify the drama and meaning behind the classic after-school special episodes, and reflect the calm of adolescent life pretty well.

I honestly didn't like next class at all, at that point it stopped feeling like a high school and instead like a twitter thread. I remember they made Miles' brother into like a school shooter type when realistically he'd probably just yell a lot and then play video games anyway. By that point I was removed from school for like three or four years so maybe i'm the out of touch one but still.

@@lmao2703 I only liked the Miles drama with Esme at the end(like that last episode was riveting) because I missed when degrassi couples were toxic. I feel like Zoe’s character growth was similar to like a Darcy or Alex from next gen. The actors who play Maya and Tristan made a band called callcutewhore and it was just not good music, and they wrote Maya and Tristan badly in next class but I’d just think of the episodes of them in Paris from next gen and get over it. And Winston and Tiny were just there and I was rooting for them like an early JT trying to get Manny/Liberty and Sean trying to make a better life for himself, respectively. I thought the intro sequence was cringe asf but I think that’s nostalgia, and that they updated the show to reflect current high school students pretty well. The color grading and tone of the show is much more in-line with teen dramas at the time, and a lot of seasons felt like we weren’t even watching degrassi, because we weren’t. Each series iteration definitely aligns with what’s going on with adolescents at the time, so the Twitter vibe is very accurate. They had Emma and others have blogs like MySpace and talked a lot about internet safety in next gen. I think Miles’ brother and the video game club reflected Pewdiepie, dox-your-friends-as-a-joke culture pretty well. The school shooter thing could’ve been handled more delicately like they did with Rick or when Fitz had a knife, but with each episode being 30 minutes and them broadly getting rid of the pt1 pt2 layout next gen had, there’s no way the stories of next class could’ve been handled as well as next gen did.

I feel the college stuff and degrassi goes Hollywood really ruined the nice send off of them (paige, ellie, marco) all graduating as friends and without the college storylines (bummed me out when Marco didn't answer paiges call after their final blow up at the end) could have maybe helped the 08 class. not much but given them a better chance.

I’m 26 so I genuinely stopped watching Degrassi in the shark in the water era, they lost me at a lot of plots and I was a sophomore by then so I wasn’t really watching tv like that but I can agree after the emma college era I checked out and they definitely confused/lost me with Manny and Jay getting married 😂

I believe people like the first 7 because viewers literally grew up with it and it was around the time kinda like the 80s where tech and culture evolved so the show did too. The other season were alright but situations either got over worked characters got underplayed the older they got and marketing started to fade at least in the US. Plus, other interests in the internet start growing where people wasn't into it that much.

I agree 100%. I used to think the 1-7 was the best. But it’s really just seasons 3-5. Seasons 11 & 12 are amazing as well. But I disagree about the college storylines. I love them lol.

I am a huge degrassi fan. Was always a Sean and Emma fan. But then I fell in love with Eli and Clare. I never quit watching it til Netflix took over. I think 1-7 is treated liked it’s the best is prob becuz it has so many of the original show from the 80s on it. That’s what I’m thinking

i liked 1-5 and 10-12 the most. i wouldnt rewatch anything else (aside from thunderstruck because it was really good for some reason.) also like another commenter here pointed out the paige struggling with uni plotline was also really cool and a realistic portrayal of gifted kid syndrome. but thats about it. also seasons 10-12 were my favourite of all of them but i get the hype for 1-5 as well

I started rewatching it not too long ago and what I've noticed is that the show is constantly falling off and then spiking back up again. The season where JT knocks up Liberty is kind of unbareable, and then it picks back up again leading to his death, and then it falls right uo until around where Alli cyberbullies Holly J, it stays up until they graduate, falls off AGAIN, then Cam unalives himself (which is probably the best episode in the entire series imo), and finally falls off one more time for season 13-14 The only reason y'all hold the original seasons in such high regard is because we grew up with them, but jokes on you because my class was 2011, aka Holly J's group.

Once they killed JT it was all over. The Lakehurst stuff was boring it was like how they merged the hospitals in Grey's Anatomy and had to kill off some characters. You could tell the first few seasons were a continuation of the old series, but as it went on they stopped caring and introduced more new people and got rid of the old ones.

Also if they didn't do the college storylines and if they didn't do the seasons as semesters it would have been alot different like they could have changed the name of the show by season 8 but I know in season 10 that's when they changed the TNG title to just Degrassi but after season 7 is whenever all the older degrassi cast graduates if they didn't do semesters it would have been season 6 that Emma and Manny and Toby and Jimmy and Spinner graduated I know originally Jimmy and Spinner were supposed to graduate at the end of season 5 with Paige, Marco and Ellie but after the incident with Rick shooting they had to stay another year while Paige, Ellie and Marco went to college even though the college storylines were cool but they did get a little boring after awhile especially in season 7 it was alot of the cast that were leaving/coming to the show after season 7 going into season 8

i always wonder how big of a con cast leaving is in this case the can't stay in the school forever and its part of the business like it or not but it does effect some shows more than others and some members do get phased out which is annoying i do wonder if degrassi sometimes gives females more focus than males

Not the main point of the video but did they actually move Degrassi to HBO Max? Because I’ve always been able to watch it on their KZbin channel ever since they made that announcement 🤔 anyway of course the classic feel of what TNG was flourishes in the earlier seasons and I think there’s a sense of nostalgia that keeps people tuned into those and the transitions into new characters are hard to adjust to sometimes but if you do stick around, there is a nice evolution and something to find interesting with each class/generation. For example, I’m more familiar with reruns of seasons 3-6 growing up so I’m nostalgic for that but the seasons that actually represent my high school age are seasons 10-14 which I had never seen at the time so there’s relevance in both of them for different reasons (and for the rest of the show too).

ughh it’s wild drake has been a part of my life for 20 years 😂😂 i remember watching jimmy get shot live as a 7 year old and immediately him doing a PSA on school shootings after it was wild. BUT also you’re right, that dude never had any interesting stories, outside of that scene when he said spinner was dead to him, after he got handicapped; dawg just became a rapper and tried to make it work with ashley just to not have it work 😂

I definitely liked seasons 1-7 but the best were 3 to 5 for sure. I liked season 7 but I wasn’t a big fan of the tone or how dark it felt . It’s not the best but I liked it, minus the Marco storylines. I liked season 8 and 9 but I felt like the show changed a lot. It got a little corny but it wasn’t bad. Season 10 is when I think the show got a little better after seasons 7 to 9

I really didn't give the later seasons a fair chance. I was the same age as Emma's class while I was watching but lost interest and stopped watching around Season 8 so I assumed the show continued to decline. But during Covid I rewatched the series and really grew to appreciate the show again around season 10.
