Thank you for doing this experiment. I found out about your challenge acceptance through the MacMasters channel and thought I’d give you a look. I live in the United States and do not own an electric car. I agree with you renting a more comfortable car, especially for a long journey. I’d have done the same. I’m watching because I’m interested in your results, not to poke fun or brawl with your subscribers. I also regret that other viewers of MacMaster may have been belligerent. They shouldn’t be, this isn’t personal, it’s just a test. Thank you.

@@ModernHeroesI'm with this guy insomuch as I totally abhor personal attacks and insinuations by MacMaster subs simply because they disagree with your opinions. I came here after watching his videos to get another perspective as someone who is on the fence about EVs as a whole. I'll fully admit I'm a petrolhead, but I'm not totally dismissive of EVs.....except maybe Teslas, but that's a whole other story! Anyway Anyway, thanks for the great video, I'll be sure to sub if I haven't already. Peace.

We have a thing over here called Top Gear. It was overly laddish, petrol head, anti environmental and quite fun. In the 2000's. Unfortunately, the legions of people trying to be Jeremy Clarkson aren't fun, and also missed the fact that TG occasionally played sort of straight and at least admitted when things needed respecting. They also resolutely backed the underdog. Unfortunately some people haven't realized you can do popularism AND humility - although holding Top Gear up as a sign of doing things right just shows how low the bar is set.

Hello again. I'm the bloke that bought your cheapest Hyundai Ioniq in the country. I love it. 3000 miles on the clock, averaging 4.8m/kwh. I wanted to say thanks for doing this video and I'm very sorry for the personal abuse you've suffered. I watched the original video of the BMW and Taycan. Not all of it as I could tell it was bollocks. Yours was perfectly fine. I've only done one long journey since buying my Ioniq, Sheffield to Torquay and back, and with a bit of planning, was a piece of cake. My passengers actually preferred the journey to doing it in my old petrol car as the three or four short stops broke up the journey. As an aside, I used the Exeter services you mention and thought 'bloody hell!' As Churchill said, Keep Buggering On.

The point is what it is like to drive an EV from John O'Groats to Lands End... doesn't matter whether it was rented, owned, or gifted. The journey and what it is like is important. Anyone who says otherwise needs to really look at themselves and think about what their issue really is. Very cool video sir, I look forward to the break down of costs in part 3. I am thinking of doing this with my R135 Renault Zoe next summer as an interesting experiment for our lovely car. It will definitely be a longer journey (50kw fast charge only), but should be an interesting journey anyway. Especially as we are coming from Northern Ireland :D

Did a small part of that journey (Evesham to Wadebridge) in October and I suspect you did it a mite quicker than I did in my Leaf! I got to Exeter and only 8 of the Gridserve chargers were live (the rest were being commissioned) but that was the only charger I had to wait for... The infrastructure isn't perfect, but when you think there was 25 years between the first petrol car hitting the UK roads and the first petrol station opening it just goes to show what progress we've actually made.

Confession time. In a previous life I used to leave work 5.30/6.00 (pm) in Sussex and drive home 430 miles to central Scotland, getting there about midnight. In a Peugeot 306 GTi6, and before that a Fiesta XR2. I literally squirted the petrol in, ran in and paid for it plus a bar of chocolate I grabbed in passing, and got back on the road. (The Peugeot had a 60-litre tank and could have done it non-stop, but I never started from full.) Then I would do it in reverse three days later. It was called a Bank Holiday weekend. Somebody should probably have stopped me. I never had an accident and I always stayed alert, but I guess I was lucky too. In the summer there I did it all again in a 51 KWh MG4. I wasn't hurrying. I needed three charging stops because I wasn't prepared to throttle my motorway speed to conserve range, but I enjoyed each one, even the one where I had to wait ten minutes for a charger and had a nice chat with other EV drivers who were waiting. It took most of the day, but I arrived as fresh as a daisy. I'm a total convert. If I'd still been intent on doing these Bank Holiday dashes, I wouldn't have bought an EV. Except, now I've got used to the MG4, I'd probably just go for the Extended Range one and get on with it.

That's an incredible journey, and I used to do journeys when I was younger that I wouldn't contemplate now. You don't give exact start/end locations, but I've had a look on google maps for some ideas! You say Sussex, so being generous, let's say Gatwick airport, ending at Bellshill, Glasgow. That's near as dammit 430miles. In an ICE, google is quoting 8hr26 via M40, M6! I'm assuming by the vintage of the cars, it's around 1988-90? That's definitely before the era of fixed speed cameras. I'm estimating you must have been driving well above 90 on long stretches to achieve a 6hour journey time. It's maintaining at least 71mph across the entire trip, which of course isn't possible at roundabouts, heavier traffic, and slowing down for the break stops. Also that's 33 years ago. If we ignore speed cameras and the much higher quantity of cars, HGV's on the road, do you think you'd be cabable of doing it given the passing of time? When you say the drive in the MG4 it took you most of the day, do you mean most of 24hours! lol

@@wintersun398 You're not far out. The village of Southwater (which is 20 miles south of Gatwick, on the A24) to Wishaw, in Lanarkshire. I was working in Southwater and going home to my parents' (latterly my mother's) for holidays. I never quite knew how far it was but the AA Route Planner says 430 miles. I did it more times than I care to remember. Yes, I was speeding. After a couple of early brushes with the law in the XR2 I got quite good at seeing them before they saw me. And of course eventually it was motorway from the time I got on to the M25 until I left the M74 at Canderside Toll. And yes I was averaging over 70. I started doing a similar trip in 1982, using my father's car, but only as far as Hatfield. That Datsun was no speed merchant though. In 1985 I bought a Fiesta 1.1L and things got a bit better. I still remember the first time I drove that car up, and realising how well it was taking the road compared to the Datsun! But it wasn't good at fast overtaking, and in 1993 I got rid of it for the XR2. The fast times were done starting from then. Over these years I saw the A74 in the Southern Uplands upgraded to the M74, and then for a while there was a section of A6 from Carlisle to the border that hadn't been upgraded. Eventually Scotland and England were joined by a complete motorway system and that sped things up a lot. The really fast times I think were after the motorways were joined up. Oh yes, and I was literally singing the Hallelujah Chorus when the M6 toll road opened. I remember (in the old Fiesta) striking out cross-country to avoid the jams caused by the Lockerbie air disaster just before Christmas 1988. I remember horrendous delays due to road works in the 1980s and into the 1990s. But that got a lot better as they started managing roadworks much better to keep the traffic flowing. People moan about roadworks these days, but they should have seen the M6 and the M1 back then. In spite of all that there were lots of times I did it before midnight, with my cat snoozing on the passenger seat, and neither of us even needing a pee the entire way!

Thanks for your efforts. I cannot understand the criticisms you have received. A car is a car and it is immaterial whether you own it or rent it. Mr EV used to use Onto as his car supplier and don’t think he has had criticism for that. The facts of your trip and how easy it was should be an eye opener for those thinking of getting an EV. The gruelling 30second task of planning the route and charging stops with ABRP was a good point to highlight.👍

I suspect the point being made about hiring a car for the trip is that the cost of EVs prevents a lot of people from buying an EV that is suited or good for long journeys. MH himself said that he hired a Polestar because he didn't fancy doing the trip in his Zoe. What his reasons are for owning a Zoe does not really detract from that point..

@@openminded3763 It's not about affording, it's about showing that the right sort of car for these trips does exist. It's not a Zoe. But basically Lee MacMaster was making the choices that would lead to stress, drama, and the opportunity to ham it up for clicks and giggles. It's not reality TV.

Sometimes he says things that make me think he's complicit, but recently on Twitter he was giving a good impression of someone who had been taken in by Lee's bullshit. I frequently drive to France on a route of just over 470 miles. Comparing travel time between my old ICE car and my EV it takes roughly half an hour longer, but not really noticeable. You have to wait at Eurotunnel, so charging there doesn't add anything to the journey. Stop for lunch, car's usually charged before i make it to desert (probably for the best). Just for safety sake top up again whilst getting a coffee mid afternoon, and then I'm there. Not a problem. Running costs have gone from over £90 for ICE (admittedly not the most efficient on the market), under £38 for EV (have done it with £34, arrive with less than 5% charge, i do prefer more contingency encase of road closures etc). No service costs doesn't hurt.

I always rented a vehicle because I didn’t want to put the 2,400 miles on my car as well as being able to drive a vehicle that was more suited to towing a small trailer. I admit that since I was alone I tended to stay on the road with 15 minute stops every 2-3 hours with an extended lunch and dinner break. I made the 1,200 mile trip in about 26 elapsed hours with a 6 hour overnight stay in a hotel. The Taycan's battery is enormous, but his fuel economy (especially as he won't use regeneration) is absolutely terrible. He hasn't got much more range than my 51 KWh MG4. He does have the potential to charge at the speed of light, but since he drives past ultra-rapid chargers to plug in to 50 Kw village-green chargers, it doesn't do him much good. A bit rich using the equivalent of the petrol sports car that struggles to get 20 mph as the comparator for a "how much does it cost" challenge.

There's absolutely no way you need "a couple of hundred" chargers at every service station - there will need to be more at sites like Exeter which serve both carriageways and are quite far from other sites but there's parts of the M6 for example where service stations are very close together too - these are the sites where I think lower numbers (like 12, not 2 or 3) would suffice at least for a significant amount of time.

Only one stop of which we needed to charge at for the trip but we'd usually charge both times because why not if we were having a coffee or lunch or whatever. The only accomodation to an EV was stopping where there was a charger rather than just anywhere but at least on the continent nearly all the chargers were at places that had facilties. I can only think of two that didnt (and they were both right outside the hotels we were stopping at.

Many years ago I used to do multiple hundred mile journeys in a £100 20 year old fiesta. Small but comfortable car. Comfy on long journeys. Easy to add range to in 5 mins from a petrol station. With EV's we seem to have cars with medium range, only if they are large and expensive. It used to be possible to get small cheap comfy cars with long range that are quick to refill. Not so with EVs. EVs are fine for low mileage per day users as demonstrated by your satisfaction with your Zoe in general and needing to get an alternative for a long trip. Similar to my situation where we have a cheapish small EV leaf for short trips and a petrol for everthing else. I think Lee and you are at different extremes, reality is in between those extremes. A reality that is perhaps boring for youtube. EVs are getting there slowly and might be fine in about 10-15 years. Fine for an increasing minority now. Hopefully in 15 years it will be possible to pick up a cheap small comfy second hand EV that can do hundreds of miles easily and we don't need to consider this new concept of right sizing which did not used to exist (in terms of range).

I used to drive an Audi Q5 and it was too large to park in most car park spaces. I decided to buy a smaller car, with the intention that I would rent a car if ever I needed a large car. I ended up looking at EV range in the winter and ended up buying a Kia E Niro and have loved it, having summer range of around 260 miles, which is when I have made my longer trips such as Lincolnshire to Disneyland Paris. From 10% to 80% would take my car around 45 minutes, but this worked well as stopping to use facilities and eat meant we were back at the car as it finished charging. Now had I charged to 100% the extra 20% charge would have taken another 45 minutes. This is not economical and still gave me over 200 miles of range. Another 160 miles and happy to stop again. Then repeat until journey done. Slightly longer trip but you arrive feeling far less stressed. So well done for doing this test in a more reasonable way and to be honest many EV's can do over 250 miles, but I am looking at a Tesla now, due to their better range and efficiency.

What Lee has never shared with his viewers he owns Digiteyes Multimedia Services Ltd in which I'm 99.9% sure he's bought the Taycan his company If you are solely using it for business purposes, you can reclaim the VAT and off-set the purchase price against corporation tax making significant savings. If you buy an electric car through your business but intend to keep it for personal use only, it will be considered a benefit in kind and will be subject to tax as if it were income. For most, there will be a portion of both business and personal use, giving a corporation tax saving to the company and a benefit in kind charge to the individual - fortunately this benefit in kind charge is relatively low for electric cars. So all this moaning he's doing loss money etc etc, when in fact he using the platform as Tax Management. Do not blame him but he plays his viewers for fools.

Great content, Gary. Have to agree, as recently did a trip from Dublin to Argyll area ( Tighnabruaich - as remote as I could make it!!) - about 350 miles, each way. One charge stop going there, one returning. Included also ferry crossings Larne-Cairnryan, and Portavadie-Tarbert (on Kintyre). Incidentally, my EV refused to go on fire on any of the 4 ferries. The whole trip was quite effortless. Thankfully there was a charger at the holiday chalet I was staying at. However , there was a fast charger 20 minutes away In Tighnabruaich, if I had needed it. Found the ChargePlace Scotland chargers quite good. The debate around EVs reminds me of the history of early petrol cars, with “red flag 🚩 men” having to walk in front of the them, to limit their speed, and also, the drivers needing to carry at least one can of petrol on the running boards (the early car version of a Frunk). Because they had range anxiety. Some people tend to be afraid of new ways and as you and others have said here, it will take time for them to become more accepting of changing technologies.

Thanks for producing more balanced non-"clickbaitey" titled perspectives on driving an EV. I'm a long time EV driver with my first test drive of a BMW i3 at CES. I sold my BMW 535i Wagon and leased a 2014 i3 BEV several months later. Great little car though its limited range was a challenge but my wife's ICE vehicle was useful for the occasional long range trip. Turned in the i3 then bought a 2018 Chevy Bolt which I drove until 2020. With its better range and in an effort to be a one-car family my wife sold her ICE we managed for a short while making several "long range" ~400+ mile trips with relative ease. Shortly after we did realise the challenge of one car so for a mere $5000 I bought a used 2013 Fiat 500e EV and my wife took on the Bolt as her primary car. So we have been driving EVs for almost 10 years - no regrets, no major issues, no out-of-juice incidents we only rented an ICE for one lengthy trip but that had more to do with capacity than range. The only battery issue we had with the Fiat was a dying 12V lead-acid - surprisingly the breakdown vehicle simply connected jump-start cables long enough to engage the high-voltage drive subsystem and I was able to take it down to the garage for a replacement!

A curious argument they're putting across... I don't have a tow bar on my car, but if I do have cause to use my parents' trailer, I'll borrow my parent's car to go with it. And if the other fella bought a Taycan because he commutes 10 miles a week, but once a year does a 1000 mile journey, that questions his perception of reality, and also how he's got any disposable income left if he'll waste it on something so impractical. By his logic, everyone should be driving Luton vans, because one day, you may want to move house. I bought a car that suits my day to day needs. If I need to massively exceed that, I'll borrow/hire something else.

Three acquaintances of mine who have an EV for driving into work think they are ideal for that, particularly as it’s driving into London. Two have kept their second car, an ICE, for longer journeys after horrendous problems with charging, queuing for chargers, restrictions of parking times, low charging rates, chargers not working and longer journey times. Having said that, the third one is replacing his ICE vehicle with a second EV as he has never had charging problems. EVs work for some but not all.

Great thanks for making this journey and demonstrating that long distance EV trips are viable. I've been on two long distance trips to Ireland in a Polestar and Kia e-Niro. No charging issues using ZapMap. I've raced a Tesla M3LR at Brands Hatch, with two of us sharing the car. We finished the day with loads of range left and I was fastest overall on the afternoon Paddock test against ALL other cars (ICE included). EV launch is incredible! The car didn't burst in to flames and nobody was electrocuted! So why does Lee, consistently obtain different results? Clearly he doesn't use the likes of ABRP, which would resolve most of his issues. If he can use Waze, why can't he use ABRP? Is the Porsche's satnav/charging planning that bad? Surely the latter would help if the Taycan has battery pre-conditioning. Lee does seem to portray a "traditional" mind set, charging when he thinks he needs to, not when software advises him to. Why is this? Letting an app take the strain seems so much easier to me, removing a great deal of anxiety. Lee's negative focus is really on charging infrastructure, which is valid. But his lack of using a planning app makes the situation far worse than it should be. He does acknowledge the performance of the Taycan, but is constantly comparing to his girlfriend's diesel golf. Not really a valid comparison. How about comparing to a similar performance ICE vehicle? Clearly Lee has been an Apple Mac expert in the past, hence his KZbin name. But he doesn't seem to be on top of technology now. Do his videos show some frustration with newer technology and wants to portray technology in a bad light? I'm guessing, but why does he try to find the worst possible positions to be in? Lee obviously loves his Porsches. he's owned many. Is he frustrated that the Taycan is very different to his past Boxers - noise, ease of refueling, the sensation of driving, ...? He must have noticed that the Taycan is VERY different to his Boxsters when he drove it? Doubtless sensational click bait attracts views. This has to be a major factor for Lee - views make money. I acknowledge that Lee does create some excellent, watchable videos from a visual and voice perspective. However I don't agree withmuch of the content. Moving on to Geoff Buys Cars. I should LOVE what he does as I also enjoy classic and low cost cars (I have several). But he leaps to extremely negative conclusions which are way off the mark. I have personal experience of one of his videos through my Motorsport links. His "Motorsport UK appeals to 8 year old girls with transgender person" (or something like that) was so incorrect that it was truly appalling. I posted the reality in comments, Geoff deleted the truth. All of this indicates that both Lee and Geoff create videos containing clickbait and misleading content. Sadly, many people believe the content, having views which are anti-change. I'm delighted that their misleading content is being highlighted as not being correct. Keep it up!

It estimated a 3 hour journey, 48 minutes of which were charging a few miles from my destination (a campsite with no overnight charging facilities). As your man says " you drive for comfort ". Small car = big city Big car = between cities I have done a 12 hour journey ( france, with rest stops ) in a 2014 vw polo diesel, packed to the gills, with no problems. But modern vw polo's and golf's are Jack's of all trades.

Trust me... Exeter will be hellish in the summer. It's hellish in the summer as it is, let alone having people having to stay there longer than they do already. And that says nothing about being in Cornwall proper. Good luck in the tourist season!

Well done mate. Look, 7/8 years ago people were doing LeJog in Nissan Leafs without any significant issues. There's no question that today, range is better, the number and density of chargers is much better, and charging speeds are incomparable to those days. Look also at Andrew Till, driving to Italy and back several times - again with no issues. You showed that there really is no problem driving an EV anywhere nowadays.

Good content, I think that the only difference between your journey and that of the Macmaster was their planning to do the trip during the half term holiday when there would have been much more traffic on the roads, but otherwise qujte a good comparison.

But again a lot of people only make long journeys (which is the point) in holiday time. Try this again 7 days into the August holiday...

Good video, ignore the detractors. No difference in having a rented vs an owned polestar-2 forthis test. In fact you were at a slight disadvantage in not knowing the car as well as you would if you owned it for a while.

Good for you 👍🏻 I have a LEAF and would rent a bigger range car if I had to get from Essex to Scotland to visit friends, totally valid 😊

Thanks for a great pair of videos. Your thoughts and experience mirror my own. I live in the remote Scottish Highlands and have been driving electric cars since 2018. I have never even come close to scaring myself due to range anxiety, although this is only due to the fact that I am able to charge from home, it may be a slightly different story if that were not the case. I thought as we moved forward in time that folk were having a more open mind, but it appears not to be the case. Keep fighting the dogma. 👍👌😁

I think you need to go and sit at a motorway services fuel station and count how many cars stop for fuel in one hour then you will know how many chargers they will need as the amount required will be many more in the next 5 years and until they knock down the pumps will there be enough room. Lots of people still use motorway services to fuel up despite the higher cost. Myself I use google maps to find petrol stations within 1 mile of a junction and pull off to fill up, easy like your planning app.

I can't see what the difference is if a Polestar owner had done the same trip, the result would have been pretty much the same. Same with EV6, Ionic 5, MG4 and so on. There are cars suited to the job and ones that aren't. I can't wait for some masochist to do this in a Honda E!! I think this originally came about because of a suspicion that MacMaster seems make things unnecessarily difficult for himself a lot of the time. The one thing that everyone can agree on is that there needs to be more chargers and that rapid pricing is currently taking the p*ss. Personally I think you did a great job in showing it's not all doom and gloom. It's videos like MacMasters that contribute to EV fud, so he has himself to blame for some of his cars loss in value. Not all cars are shit like his Taycan fortunately.

Fair play for you taking up the challange that was set. Let's be honest if you done it in a Tesla they would have moaned about that too, as it would have been even easier again with more charging options. So, I'm glad you took the polestar option just to show how it's possible to do in an EV other than a Tesla. For me personally I bought an EV 10 years ago as a 2nd car run around, to do my daily work commute etc. It turns out that the 2nd car EV does 16.000 miles a year and the other diesel SUV only 3,000 a year now. EV's aren't for everyone and if I'm honest I would never recommend an EV if you haven't got off-road parking to charge it from home. But give it another 5-10 years when EV range will be approaching the 500 mile mark and recharge time in 10-15 mins. You can then seriously make a case for an EV.

I keep responding to people saying that we use our EV for long trips, our ICE cars only locally, when they get used. Certainly not a preference to use our diesel for a long trip. Can't even remember the last long trip I did in it, over a year ago.

I regularly drive up and down the country for this I use a Volvo V50 diesel towing a motorcycle trailer, around town and when not towing I use a Chevrolet volt and a kangoo ze both great vehicles as a driver with over 35yrs experience with all types of vehicles the main advantage of EVs is the huge savings in fuel costs never mind the savings in servicing I'm looking for suitable EV for towing great video 👍

Great videos. YT recommended Geoff and Mcmasters videos which after watching them it was so obvious it was a hatchet job I don’t even own an EV and the mistakes and hard work mcmaster made of the whole trip was just laughable. Enjoyed your no nonsense video so subscribed on YT and Twitter 👍

Well look at the latest. Leeds to Covent Garden. That would be either a no stop or a 5 mins stop in my car. Lee doesn't charge the night before at his girlfriend's because she has no level 2 but he doesn't use the granny charger. Starts with 92 miles range and goes straight to the Leeds Porsche depot and charges for 45 minutes! Then just about 30 miles North of Milton Keynes stops for the loo, then goes to MK to charge for 31 minutes. Better would have been an overnight charge and a very short stop or just head off with 92 miles range and do one or two quicker charges en route, one where he went to the loo. Each to their own. Just see it as entertainment. As to costs, well drive an inefficient car with poor range and use high priced chargers and there can only be one result.

Outstanding effort, it's not really an issue for an EV to do that journey and yo have proved beyond doubt. Imagine being the numpty with a £120k Porsche not able to do the same journey.

Thanks for your video. It was very honest interesting and informative. I’ve stumbled across McMarster videos some time back and saw one where he was slagging off his EV and the charging system and he’s still doing it… If it was that bad I would have switched back to a Petrol/Diesel, unless they are tied to using the EV.
