Just look at the changes Deschamps did in the WC final. He took out Giroud in the first half and Griezmann & Dembele early in the 2nd half to chase the game. These 3 were his key players all tournament. Those subs who were young and did not/barely played in the tournament so far changed the game. Southgate would never. THAT is the difference. Southgate is neat. He picks the best XI and set them up to play well but he does not know how to change the game if it goes wrong.

He took Giroud & Dembele off on 40 minutes I believe. Giroud threw a fit on the sideline throwing a water bottle. Does Deschamps care? No, because his job is to compete and win, not to coddle his favorite players and tell them everything will be OK. This is why France have been in 3 tournament finals since 2016 and will probably be there or thereabouts in 2024.

Martin's defence is not very convincing. The question was "so Martin we will win the Europeans in 2024, yes?" The response " we hope so Jim". There is the reason we will lose again under Southgate, we don't believe we can win. I don't believe we can win under Southgate, but ask me the same question at any time and my response will be It's coming home. Just like the last 3 competitions under Southgate...... The man is wholly average, at some point in an important game you have to gamble to win. Think ahead of the game. Southgate is unable to think like that. His record on the choice of players and the timing of substitutions is not just bad, it's abysmal. He is cautious to a fault, result we're always too late.

Southgate has set the stage for divides to form again in the England camp, hes shown these past 6 years that he has a preference for certain players and he will continue to pick them regardless of their form and out of pure loyalty to him and disregard younger players who are doing well but require tactical changes that are beyond him to make. Those players that have been snubbed this far will either start snubbing the call ups or come in and cause infighting in future camps.

Spot on… If I was Trent I’d be telling him to do one…. Trent could have had a nice holiday with his girlfriend during the World Cup instead of sitting on Southgate’s bench knowing Southgate had no intention of playing him. They get precious little holiday time as it is, season ends mid June, new season starts first week of August so that’s 6 weeks reduced to about 3 weeks because of pre season tour / training, per year ! I would say to Southgate, I just want to concentrate on my club football thanks

@@BrandonSmith-ct5rz oh cheers I had no idea that was the case thanks for clearing that up. The reason he should be sacked is not because he hasn't won it, its because he is completely tactically inept. He gets the starting lineup wrong as well as in game management. He's a reactionary manager and if you want to see what a good manager does in these tough games go and watch the final last night and the decisions the French manager made to change the game. In every tournament under southgate he has made the wrong decision at crucial points and some of them don't even make any sense like using sterling who's been away from the camp dealing with a break in. A competent manager would beat France in that game we had with them. You also have to remember that these big nations, that use to dominate these tournaments like Germany etc, are all in transitional periods trying to bring the youth into their setup and there will never be an easier time to win a tournament with our squad vs these other nations.

Not the only manager. You're forgetting Arteta. Similar situation actually, they gave him a contract before the last few crunch games instead of waiting until the end of the season, and hey presto arsenal collapsed, and they stuck by him and spent a record amount in the summer transfer window. And this is after consecutive 8th place finishes, unheard of for Arsenal.

@@marksmarsh2039 Southgate has seemingly provided stability, attempted to create a club atmosphere within the group, and has not flopped at tournaments. However, he will never be the person to take them to the next level. We all know he will lose with dignity again when we meet strong opposition in 2024. Still, he will be £8M richer and be able to put his kids through university, which will be nice, wont it (?)

@@alipanroosendaal9503 tad cynical . Well like you said has provided stability , attempted to create club atmosphere and has not flopped so maybe not as bad as everybody is saying. Losing to Croatia , Italy and France never an unheard of thing for any country. Even Argentina. And it was after all in a penalty shoot out we lost to Italy whilst the other two matches were close 2-1 defeats. Maybe we expect much too much here. I don't know. Thought we were much better than France at times although we could tighten up a bit at the back otherwise we will always have to dominate teams with a goal disadvantage

Southgate's resume:- 1) Got Middlesbrough relegated, despite Gibson ploughing 10's of millions into the team. Middlesbrough have never truly recovered to this day. 2) Finished bottom of Euro 2015 group as England U21 manager, yet somehow got the full England job. 3) Got knocked out of Russia 2018 by (the first real challenge) Croatia, a tiny nation with only a 3 million population. 4) Got beat in Euro 2020 by a mediocre Italian team that would then fail to qualify for the next world cup. 5) beat Iran, Wales, a draw with America, and knocked out by a French team that was more than beatable. And that's it. He's the luckiest manager alive. We had the best draws in 2018 and 2020 in a lifetime, with a decent manager, we could of won those tournaments. We had the players. But Southgate in holding a group of talented players back.

And now we work towards ……. His FOURTH TOURNAMENT without success as it’s only 18 months away. But, by the same token, say he gets knocked out in the quarter final of Euro 24, does he still get to stay on because the next World Cup is then only 2 years away ? How many tournaments without winning anything does he get ?

1000% agree with Simon here, when you breakdown what Southgate has done you will see he’s failed, he fails to make big decisions and his results on the pitch against the top 10 ranked teams in the world is sackable alone by only winning something like 4 out of 20+ games

The way to look at it is, if your LIFE depended on England winning the next euros, would you retain Gareth Southgate as head coach? Something tells me the FA didn't apply this principle, mainly because their own pockets well lined and they personally have nothing to lose so just went for the safe option

If we equate this to a company (here the FA) are in need of successful projects to restore the company back to commercial prominence (here win a trophy). You set up a project head/leader and make available to the project the best resources the company can provide. Success is imperative. A close failure is that failure. We have had three close failures, surely somebody has to held accountable. That accountability in this case falls at the feet of the person who has led and failed three times. Why are we now putting trust in him to lead and probably fail again?

Southgate and his yes men staff, between them somehow agreed that Sterling who had been away from the squad due to traumatic personal matters should be introduced before Rashford. Saka was playing well enough to remain, and to frustrate all of us clear thinking football lovers, he introduces Grealish with a min to play??? Clever managers do that to slow the game down. Mind blowing.

Ten Haag arrives at Old Trafford and immediately benches McGuire, United start winning games and keeping clean sheets. Their form turns around….. Southgate continues to start McGuire every game. England win only 3 out of last 10 games, get relegated from Nations League, and at the World Cup McGuire is responsible for a conceded goal Vs Iran and France’s second and winning goal in Quarter final, knocking England out…… Favourites FC Expect the same result in 18 months at the Euros

Coming from an outside perspective (Aussie) the rest of Europe and the world want south gate in, you have the most frightening pool of players and depth. It would be terrifying to face against if it was teed up with an elite manager who's a proven winner who knows the game. I feel like it's a real wasted opportunity on southgate tbh. This Kewon with his tired arguments “ Southgate brought us to the semis, he brought us to the quarterfinals… “ but after 6 years and 3 tournaments England got Jack. Mancini took over Italy and won the Euro, Scalini took over Argentina won them Cope America and World Cup, Dechamps took over France he brought them to the finals of the Euro and then won them a World Cup … it doesn’t take three tournaments and over 6 years. For a coaches quality to show…

Southgate’s in game substitutions tell you everything you need to know his managerial ability. Really really bad. This world cup and the last one. 2018 - Croatia chasing the game - left in form Vardy on the bench. Didn’t have the balls to take off Kane who you wouldn’t know was on the pitch. 2022 - Need a goal vs France. Brings on Sterling whos been terrible. Gives bang in form and high on confidence Rashford 2 mins at the end. 2022 -Doesn’t give Englands most creative centre midfielder (Maddison) a single minute in the tournament. Overcomplicating the game. England should be so much better. Sometimes coaches at the highest level aren’t actually that good

It’s deja vu all over again. The talk about Southgate having his favourites was all clear to see when he called on Sterling to get us out of a hole against the French.Sterling the man who had flown home because of the nightmare situation of the burglary. His mind could not have been in a good place but was called upon before Rashford, Grealish,Maddison toreplace Saka, who was arguably our best player on the night. Time for a change

When you’ve got managers like Thomas Tuchel available, keeping a cereal bottler like Southgate in charge, with arguably the best squad England’s ever had, is a travesty in my opinion. He hasn’t beaten anybody of significance in 6 years and with the best England squad of my 40+ years lifetime. This team needs a change in leadership PERIOD and if Southgate had any respect for the country, he would step down himself.

I completely agree. When for example you look at the Italia 90 squad you had 2 world class players in Gazza and Waddle. Then after that a clinical lethal striker in Lineker and other decent players like Platt and Beardsley. However the squad was thin. Robsons tactical genius helped us get to the semi final where we were very unlucky not to beat a great German team....Barca wont come calling for Southgate like they did for Robson.

There are too many other good teams in Europe to say England must win it. Our squad will get weaker, not stronger. We've had three great opportunities to win with complete squads. Left-backs are an issue, centre-backs are an issue, centre-midfielders and centre forwards are an issue, long term.

Southgate has done no better than Sven. Solid qualification and no shocks at tournaments. Sven lost to Portugal (golden generation for Portugal managed by a WC winner) on pens twice and Brazil in 90 mins. QF QF QF Southgate lost to Italy on pens (at home), Croatia in 120 mins and France in 90 mins. SF F QF Now the semi and final is misleading. He beat one "top" team and that was a Germany in transition (as they have been since 2016). Otherwise what game was actually memorable. Sweden, Senegal, Ukraine? If you say Sven had "big" names like Beckham, Owen, Rooney et al, remember England were never top 4 in Sven's time as other teams had equal or better players (France, Italy, Brazil, Argentina and Netherlands) and deeper squads. Sven's time they had quality CBs and Southgate has quality fullbacks. The similarities are eerie. It's just Southgate is one of the England boys from 90s, so ex player pundits sing his praises. England should have rehired Glenn Hoddle. The one thing neither managed and Alf Ramsey didn't either, was overcome England's mental block. England need a manager who can convince the players they can beat a big team, someone who projects confidence and calmness. That could be anybody, but it won't be Southgate.
