i really hope if they do a remake they don't change it up too much, like changing it to daybreak's combat system, that would ruin it. i don't mind them adding a few of the things from cold steel, like orders and staggers i guess, but honestly i'd prefer they just leave the combat system alone and just have cold steel visuals. sadly that's unlikely, i just hope the don't entirely ruin it like ff7 "remake" that is not even close to a remake, it's more like a sequel. reminds me of terminator genysis, where it starts out like the original at the very start and quickly turns into something completely different. i'd rather just have remasters like we got with cold steel, it would take far less time and there would be no risk of them screwing it up.
@niles85764 ай бұрын
@@Jack_80 you do realize the the biggest problem with the sky games is the age for alot of people. if they completely remake it, it will most likely have daybreak combat which wouldn't ruin it. sky fc is my favorite game of all time and if they made a remake that is just daybreak engine with no other changes then that would be a bad remake. i hope its not gonna be a ff7 remake situation where they completely change the game entirely but if they won't modernize it alot of people might have a bad first impression of it. also the ff7 remake is a remake. a remake is completely remaking the game from ground up which can include the story and game play changes. now if it was a remaster then i would agree that it is not good but come on use the correct terms at least

One thing I love about Trails that I don't think the developers even thought about is how the entries tend to have conveniences that mirror the year they came out despite having an internal calendar. It gives off the unintended motif of the games having a recurring theme of the downsides of technology progressing too quickly. It allows for characters like Estelle to struggle to use a phone, but also allowing Juna to shred on a motorcycle in the span of 4 or 5 years. That being said, I really hope any remakes don't modernize the setting of Liberl- keep it as conservative as it was when it was released.

For what it's worth, I'm a dinosaur from the NES days and I suck at computers. Having said that, I bought a Steam Deck less about a year ago and I was able to play the whole Trails series in chronological order since December 2023 with zero issues starting with Trails in the Sky FC. I'm currently on Reverie and expecting to play Daybreak once the English translation is released next month. The only tinkering needed was telling the Deck to run the game with the Experimental Proton tool instead of the default because the default wasn't able to play the small amount of animated cut-scenes each game has, and setting that up for my Steam Deck literally took like 5 minutes using a youtube tutorial, and then 5 seconds for each game once I was about to run it for the first time. And if you don't care about the cutscenes you can play it as is with no tinkering and just watch them on youtube once they come up in each game because what happens is that the game runs the cutscene with full audio but no video, and once it's done the game continues normally, so it's just a minor inconvenience and not a game-breaking problem. In other words, getting a Steam Deck is a very easy way to be able to play the whole series in order and without running into bugs or having to worry about how to set up the games so that they run properly regardless of the original console they belonged to.

@@Fast_Travel_Gamer I don't know how you're gonna be able to wait to start SC once FC ends, especially if you already have SC ready to go! That being said, have you given thought to how you're going to play The 3rd? Personally, I also started my Trails journey with Sky FC and SC on my Vita about three years ago; figured I'd play the 3rd eventually on PC. Unfortunately, about 140 hours into my SC playthrough, my Vita screen started acting up and I couldn't really use it anymore. Eventually, I wound up picking up a Steam Deck and I scooped up entire Sky trilogy on the cheap. I really didn't want to replay FC, but I did want to start off a new SC play through with completed FC save data, as I had done on my Vita previously. So I just found and downloaded a 100% complete FC save file, imported it into my SC game and BOOM, I got sucked into SC for another 140 hours, albeit this time with Japanese voiceovers courtesy of the Evo mod. Lemme tell you; those VOs are game-changing. I was able to deal with another 140 hours in SC thanks to those VOs; it was like playing a whole other game. Now I'm playing the 3rd after finishing SC a couple of weeks ago; it's... different, but I'm really digging it. It took me about two and a half years and two gaming handhelds to get to this point, but here I am; time well spent, IMO. Enjoy the end of FC, my guy. 💪🏽

In theory, Cold Steel I and II could be made into just one game that way. III and IV might be a bit too big for that, even after the trimming. Besides that, keep the balance fixes for CS II and IV, give the animations a bit more love and polish, and the Cold Steel subseries gets a big improvement without needing to redo everything from scratch. Still counts as a remake, because they still need to change the script (and maybe they would use the new engine).

A remaster or remake counts as a separate "new" game and so the rights can be given away to someone else. XSEED only has the right for the original release not for the remasters or remakes. My big hangup with the idea of remaking the Sky games pretty much has everything to do with the combat system. If Falcom does choose to remake the Sky games there’s a very high chance that updates to combat will go beyond QoL and update them substantially for a modern audience. Business-wise this makes perfect sense, but in my opinion one of the more immersive aspects of the series is seeing the combat evolve alongside orbment technology. Just imagine a new player completing a remade Sky trilogy with sleeker and more modern combat, only to move on to Crossbell and be told by the story about how much of a leap the Enigmas are while simultaneously playing through an older and more rudimentary combat system. I think that’d be cheeks, not gonna lie.

I remember modding the steam version of the entire trilogy because jp language was not available, then I realize the voice mod was from a version they release only in Japan that was like a remaster in 2014, when even the side quest were voice acted. My sorprise when in Crossbel arc and Cold Steel series this was not a thing, xd.

i think it'll be similar to how zero and azure we're released in the west recently. and i'm also thinking they may want to get it out in the west before we get o zemuria so fans can understand whats going on more

As much as I think the series has improved over the years with graphics and more fleshed out in many aspects, I still think the older titles like sky trilogy have the best music.

Hopefully they add mention of Johan (Or rather, Ash - it's hard to know if he's taken the alias by this point) in Trails In The Sky (Remake), along with HD graphics and fully voiced (Pity Sandy Fox retired as Renne after Cold Steel IV)

I started with Sky last year and I'm currently playing CS3, it's been quite a journey, and I've loved every single one of the entries. I think that albeit a bit slow, FC is the best entry point overall. It's such a nice and comfy game that you can just take your time getting to know the characters and world. Such a satisfying game.... Plus it has chest messages, which I miss a lot in the CS games

We need a new version, it's about time, it could be full 3D or 2.5 and I'd be happy.

Just port it over, you don’t need to remake everything.

So more chances for the 3 Sky Evolution titles than a full remake huh... a bit of a bummer since i already have those on my PSVITA, but well, considering a lot of people can't read moonrunes, i suppose it's would be the most logical decision indeed. Still, pretty impatient to hear what Falcom has kept stored for us for those 20th years anniversary, also Loewe is my boy!

further questions might be whether they want to release the game this year or next, since the nintendo switch is quite prominent in japan and the next generation console of nintendo "might" release next year as well. a port with some remaster features would be cool, but publishing the trilogy on a platform that might be replaced next year would be an odd choice as well. i personally hope for a hd remaster rather than a remake, though i'm hooked anyways.

I would also add localization into different languages.

Man i love the Trails in the sky. I remember playing the first chapter on the PSP, I found a cord that would allow me to see it on my tv. So there i was basically holding this cord with my pinky to stay plugged into my PSP, cause it just would not stay. But man that was so enjoyable just kinda janky playing this game on the PSP on my tv.

I’m seeing a lot of people preferring a port instead of remake, but I feel the opposite. Star Ocean the second story R was as close to a perfect remake that polished out many of the original issues as you can find (at least in my opinion) and a remake like that for the trails in the sky trilogy would be perfect to me
@nunojardim71885 ай бұрын
I was confused at first when you pointed out the "problem", until you mentioned that the devs/publisher were the ones acknowledging some form of problem. Subjectively I don't see it, I played the whole series in order just fine, but I'm obviously "onboard" with a remake, and this entire thought process is just curiosity to me. With that in mind this idea of "old and inaccessible" as a problem, needs to be backed up with proper logistics, surveys, feedback, market projections, and more "stuff" I don't care. They (corporate) probably already took care of that, and know if it's hurting or holding back the franchise, not me. Anyway, I don't think this is the "biggest problem with trails", and anyone who gives it a shot, would quickly realize how charming and "full of soul" trails in the sky is (it has a number of other issues, though). So: Modern Times Entry Barrier to the trilogy? Yeah I will agree to that... Inaccessible and unappealing (that's the dev subtext I gather here), not so much. I probably wouldn't even comment, if something other than "biggest problem" was on the title.

I suspect it's going to be a tweaked and reworked port of the Trails in the Sky Evolution games to all the major platforms.

If they remade the sky trilogy I’d lose my mind. A port would be nice enough though. These hold up super well and the more accessible they are the better in my book.

I tried to start with the older titles but just couldn’t get into it. Primarily because of the gameplay. Went to Cold Steel 1 and never looked back. Would love to revisit them in a remake. Also, can we please get English versions of cold steel 1 and 2 for switch!?

I'm hoping it's not an entire remake but more to just make the games more modern with QoL stuff added and just minor changes to maybe the core gameplay. I think there's still a great charm with the older chibi graphics. To me it feels like watching the games progress just like how the technology in Zemuria is as well. They could just make an HD or Definitive edition and that would be perfect.

I want more people to have access to the Sky Trilogy, but I also really want a Tokyo Xanadu 2.
@nathanielknight18385 ай бұрын
a proper remake in the fancy new engine could indeed bring many new players to the series (and their other series as well). While I personally still enjoy the gameplay of the sky games, I also started gaming during the SNES era and not somewhere down the line as games became way more sophisticated. Cause even if they were made more accessible the main complaint is still the gameplay and the long wait for the payoff which comes the first time really during the halfway point of SC, its end and then what happens in the 3rd.
@HalfpennyTerwilliger5 ай бұрын
I'd be perfectly happy with a Sky remaster on the level of what PH3 did with Zero/Azure for PC and Switch. If they really go for the full remake using their most recent tech, it'll take way more time and require their own team to work on it instead of working on continuing the series or making other new games. In the long run that would also put Crossbell in a weird place as new people discovering the series with a remade Sky would suddendly have to go back to older graphics and mechanics in the middle of the series before being able to play Cold Steel.

I'm kinda lucky when i start play this series because i use PC, i start the series from Sky FC with Voice Acting, adding EVO music,and character potrait. I prefer remaster or rerelease EVO version to other platforms. If i remember in Interview last year for Ys X the interviewer ask Ys V Kondo said, development of remake game can cost more than new game. I think it's true when it comes to asset. Remake Sky Trilogy will be nice but i don't know when the remake release, NISA already catchup to Kai no Kiseki release.

I think this is the biggest problem for any long-running game franchise with a sporadic release on various platforms, some of which are so outdated that it's impossible to play without piracy emulation. I think that's probably why some francises like the early Final Fantasy games being re-released collections for the Switch.
@calendar65265 ай бұрын
Honestly, unless you want to play all the games back to back or you can remember all the details I don't think it's necessary to start from the first Sky. I did play the game by release date but I played the game when Liberl arc is the only one available. Now, you can even start playing from Daybreak in English with no problem. And go from there if you do get invested in the series.

I understand that sentiment of just doing a remaster but I think we need remember that the underlying purpose of this is not for the people that have already played the game (eg. this community generally), but to get those that have not had accessibility to have the optimal entry-point into the series (and hence drive sales). Falcom needs to be able to appeal to a younger audience and get them into their games and that audience may want something which is more up to date than an isometric sprite-based game (which I love and I know many of the fans love but again this is not about us). And they would like all the veterans to buy the game as well, regardless of whether we have the old game or not - I know I would buy it even though I have the games on PC, Vita etc.. At the end of the day I think this will have cost benefit of developing a remake (high cost both in terms of $ and time but potentially high benefit to them because all the old audience plus significant new audience who have felt blocked to the series) versus a remaster (lower cost maybe - depends on the portability of the code, but a lot less benefit). I think if I was going to do a remaster, I would look to get it onto Android / Apple through emulation because that would probably provide a lot more accessibility with low cost and it would look appropriate for the medium. But would that be very satisfying or achieve the goal?

I imagine the sky triology may be getting the Atlier Marie treatment. Not a full 3d remake in the graphics of modern titles, but rather a chibi 2d top-down remake with newer models, backgrounds, updated sprite art, etc. I would like full voice acting, and I imagine a jp version would, considering evolution. But I seriously have doubs for an en dub.
