Thank you for your thoughts and comments on the Gibson Les Paul. I'm 65 and bought a Les Paul tribute satin iced tea 6 months ago and I enjoy the tones every time I pick it up and plug it into any of my tube amps. Yes, there is history and legacy to Les Paul guitars but I always think of the genius of who Les Paul really was and what he created in his lifetime. Rock On and play those Allman Brothers licks! Thanks for another great KZbin video Phil!

@@lostreb That's right, it was 8s they were using as a control for the treble frequencies on a gain channel. Or something like that... I should probably go rewatch that at some point too. But first, I now need to find that video on 7s (which, thanks for mentioning). I started my guitar playing on acoustic as a kid, and playing 14s and 13s for almost half a decade before figuring out that I could get more out of 12s , I'm only now starting to play electric and about to put 10s on my Les Paul... 9s felt insanely light when I first used a set, whereas since I've been playing amplified using 11s tuned a half step down I've been getting used to less tension. 8s here we come!

Your right about strings I have carlpol tunnel problems went from 10s to 8s on strats an ibanez and it solved it over night also shorten scale lenght on acoustic got a humming bird 10s to 50s strings and I can play that just fine. I use 10s on my jaguar 24 inch and 9s on my es 335 24.7 inch and i play 4 hrs a day every day no issues as before i used all ernie ball 10s. but since i experimented with strings and scale lenght its kept me playing guitar and i play for me not a band it helps my mental health so sounds hyperbolic and maybe is but string changes improved if not saved my life so dont give up on ya guitar play with ya gauges peace and love brothers an sisters

Hey Phil! Thanks again for the mention. I hope you are still enjoying your Angel pickups. The main reason I try to keep Octave Doctor pickups affordable is because I believe other boutique pickup manufacturers are overcharging their customers. As a guitarist from a working class background I understand only too well that most guitarists have to consider value for money when purchasing gear.

Holy crap he used my comment for the headline question! I'm on a trip right now, I got back to my hotel from playing that SG at a pawn shop and saw the show was live and figured I'd ask an opinion/get some good old fashioned enabling HAHA. it does have two dents running horizontal on the back of the neck near the joint, I'm hoping to go back tomorrow and talk him down a bit since $800 seems on the high end for the condition when they've sold on Reverb from $600-$900 in better condition. This is a lefty though, I don't know if that makes it rarer or if Gibson just charged more outright for a southpaw model.

Thank you Phil for these wonderful and insightful and not least comfy and welcoming neardy programs! I learn a lot by listening to your show. Deeply appreciate what you do! :) I got my first Fender strat (a mexican Classic 70's in natural, thanks to the influence of Blackmore Cal Jam '74) back in '99 and I loved it from the first second and still do. However, I did also accidentally hit the volume knob all the time while playing. I guess I was used to the "super" strats I had before it. I really wanted to play strat so I decided to put real effort in and change my playing style. Turns out, my over all playing technique benefitted hugely from the change. I've gotten less sloppy and more controlled. So, what I'm saying is; fine go ahead and change the guitar it's really everybody's choice but changing yourself can be a great alternative! I certainly never looked back and thought "goosh, why did I go through all the trouble changing the way I played?" Cheers from Sweden

If you want to save yourself a small fortune in sandpaper costs get yourself an abrasive cleaning stick from Woodcraft, Rockler or even Harbor Freight, they all feel the same to me. You can clean out the paper when it starts to load up and its like new over and over again. My paper last at least 10 times as long if I use it often enough. More for the higher grits, once it gets a gloss look to the product being removed its most like too late. The stick will last forever, you'll probably loose it before you use it up.

Phil-your good gentle nature shines thru in the way you present and carry yourself. But even kind and gentle souls are likely to have some button, no matter how small or difficult to reach, once pushed engages a detonation that can be quite shocking (like an iceberg or volcano-you just can’t see what really lies beneath the surface. With that in mind I offer the following advice about jokes and pranks. The best received jokes are often those one tells about oneself (the man who can make fun of himself to the enjoyment of others can fill a room with laughter-ala Rodney Dangerfield.) Next would be jokes about no particular individual-provided they do not involve sensitive racial or ethnic stereotypes that may be for some, overtly offensive. If you are however a member of same ethnic or racial group it may go over well because there again you are practicing self depredation (Richard Pryor and later Carlos Mencia were very good at this.) Most risky is the joke about or prank pulled on someone else. This always carries the risk of actually humiliating and hurting the target or perhaps worse-enraging them to the point of violence. Thus such jokes or pranks carry significantly more risk-it can be a thin line between good natured fun and bullying. So before contemplating a prank on or telling a joke making fun of someone else-one should always stop and consider the person involved-do you know them well enough to know how well they can laugh at themselves? Will it be received as bullying or a hostile act? Will it permanently damage the relationship you have with that person? Do you know what their current mental state is like-even an ordinarily good natured person who likes a good joke and can usually laugh at themselves, may be under some extreme personal distress and snap because of it. Pulling a prank on or telling a public joke ridiculing a stranger or someone you barely know carries the biggest risk and should warrant caution-at least if you are the kind of person who does not wish to hurt others feelings without cause or don’t want to incite someone to revenge or even to violence towards you for what you thought was going to be a harmless joke or prank.

Best guitars to invest in the: 50's = Gibson original late 50's 60-70's = Fender every strat player's dream 80's = Ibanez they stayed on top of the heap of hair metal, thrash and neoclassical 90's = PRS starts to challenge Gibson and Fender as THE session guitar 00's = Ibanez and PRS dominate Grunge and Numetal 10's = After market mods start to grow with the guitar market tons. Signature gear for everything. PRS and Epiphone sign large artists to Korean made guitar deals at affordable prices. Retro guitars make a comeback with after market mods as the interest. 20's = Strandberg guitars become a huge hit from Cort Tek in Indonesia and challenge the boutique market with unprecedented ergonomics and construction quality at world class level but costing half of a Gibson Standard Les Paul. Making them available to people other than dentists (PRS)

Back decades and decades ago I had a company that manufactured Lisa's calluses collars and harnesses for dogs and I used an industrial sewing machine well the bobbins you would get pretty wounds got to be very expensive so I made my own winder really what it was it's just a motor attached to a spindle or you might call it a axle that the bottom went on and then there was a little thumb that sat on top in the middle of the the bobbin so as the as the thread rounds onto the bobbin it would push this little thumb up and when it was full it would push the thumb completely up it with pop up and then the spindle with disengage from the bobbin if that makes any sense cost like 15 bucks in parts not even the most expensive part was the motor didn't have the machine anything I don't know what you call it I guess a spindle and then you you know get get the wire onto the bobbin which is similar to a bobbin that you would use for a pickup and then start it and then just let it go and ask again is the friend as the thread got more and more on to the bobbin it would push the little thumb the side in between the two walls of the bobbin until it reached you can set it for however much thread you wanted on the bobbin and it would just keep it go up and up and up and then at one point it would just pop it up and it would disengage the axle or the spindle and the bottom was full that's a lot easier than using a drill that's that I can tell you I'm not good at describing something like this but maybe someone will get the idea and they can make their own winding machine

When you talk about winding pickups artists in a single person making the pickup that makes sense because the technique that person will use how much how how much tension he puts on a string when he's holding it the angle he does it those are going to be tangible real differences from somebody else doing it but when you talk in my opinion in my view when you talk about electronics when you are putting you know using a circuit board let's say and you add a resistor and your transistor or whatever those things are tested they within a tolerance and it doesn't matter who puts those together as long as they are put together correctly it's going to be the same thing no matter who does it that's why with a chef it's different you know because that person he puts a pinch in it's not going to be the same pinch of someone else puts in but when it comes to when I think a two analogies I think the electronics and the wine the pick up wine thing making a handmade pick up and making a handmade amplifier are two different things completely because it doesn't matter whether the guy soldering a circuit soldering a transistor to a resistor to a resistant to a cat whatever it doesn't matter what angle he saw that it doesn't matter what soldering gun he uses as long as the connections are all clean and they're done right doesn't matter who does that in my opinion it's going to be the same result but when it comes to things like pick up wine then yeah then it does make a huge difference what's his name I think it's Dave's world of fun he's occasionally throws this saying out there what's the difference between art and crafts and he says an artist is an artist and crafts is shitty on so that's a whole other story for another ball game and I think my point is valid that's why I don't I don't believe that the handwired amps give you any more value at all and any kind of difference although I did find out that when fender or other companies do a handwired version of a specific amp some of the components are different and there's the difference it's not in the wire it's not it's not in whose side is what or you know as long as it in an electrical device as long as everything is done correctly and then the proper order it's going to be the same minus the tolerance says that a specific part has if anyone disagrees with me will feel free to reply and comment but you're going to be wrong LOL just kidding sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom guitarist PS that's why even if I had the money I wouldn't buy a handwired anything

Sorry, but due to some delays I wasn’t able to make the stream. I still have a question for you though. I have recently been interested in acquiring an old Gibson designer guitar, (e.g a Doublecut, Double Neck, Flying V or Explorer.) and I was wondering what era should I go for, and what model should I go for?

Phil hollow body guitars electric you got me wondering now when I was told was that my grech electromatic hollow body I think you were just talking about the Japanese ones which are more expensive they were five-ply I'm pretty sure my 5422t is five fly all Maple and then I was under the assumption that like a Gibson es 335 is a three-ply maple poplar and Maple one of us is wrong most likely considering you're like in the biz and I've been doing it longer than I have although you're younger than me and that you would be right but if anyone picks up on this I'm just curious five-ply all Maple 5422t gretch hollow body or sweet fly Maple poplar maple 3:35 Gibson who's right LOL probably you everyone stay you know stay safe and have fun with your guitars and etc sincerely yours, above the blind bedroom guitars

?? I noticed that on the back of my Mach 1 katana 100 the KTN 100 when I plug my guitar in it wasn't working and I went to feel if the plug was plugged in the back and I noticed it was loose I jiggled it I pushed it back in and started working but the actual socket in the in the back of the amp is very loose in there and I'm wondering does it even pay to look into getting it replaced is it even possible to replace it these things I may just like you know use them and throw them away so I'm wondering if I should even go down that road actually probably would just make sense to call my local store that I bought it from and ask them but I figured I'd throw it out here anyway so if anyone has an opinion please let me know thank you everybody sincerely yours, Bob the blind bedroom guitarist

Since the recycling thing came up on a guitar ascentric channel I'll go with it at least in the states a lot of the things that are recyclable that you throw into your bins that they tell you to recycle don't end up being recycled the way you think they are they are generally not reprocessed in the United States they are sent out of the country companies by these things and they don't necessarily recycle it so it's a whole big gimmick to make things look like they're trying to be green when in reality you just don't know and they end up in countries like China and other places that don't have the recycling laws that we do it's a whole mixed up thing that's all I'm going to say about it cuz it's a guitar channel but don't let your eyes everything you see and read is not what it appears to be

I had a bass on Reverb FOR MONTHS, and it didn't sell either. My only idea is the $100 shipping cost. Of course, the shipping estimation tool said $150 for USPS shipping. That means if I ask for $100 shipping, part of the shipping is coming out of my own pocket. If you think that $100 is STILL too much to pay, I don't know what to tell you. The only pricing information I have to go on is the shipping estimation tool. Edit: I have another theory, based on my Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace sales. The trend is the used market ONLY wants starter-level guitars, and starter-level prices. The cheaper the guitar, the faster you will sell it. BUT, the hard ceiling is $500. Even at that price, be prepared for a bunch of $100 offers. Now, let's say you list a guitar at $1000. Yes, the brand-new price was $1500+, so the $1000 price is a fair price. Even still, the simple fact that the guitar is $1000 means you will never sell it. The simple fact of the matter is VERY FEW even HAVE that kind of money, much less that kind of throwaway money to throw at a guitar. Basically, ANYTHING more than $500, and you will NEVER be able to sell it. Ever.

Old Gibsons maybe. I dont think guitars are a good investment because pop culture used to be rock so lots of people have nostalgia towards it. If its about buying a Gibson and looking for An excuse to buy one my advice if it makes you happy DO IT if its about money dont buy guitars buy old gaming consoles.

@@maxmustardman298 that's true but same goes for guitars if you dont store it properly the sun changes the finish moisture could become a problem when its damaged but in a dark place with controlled humidity it should be fine.

Something had the shipping jacked up and I would pay that again. the guitar the shipping was lower. You may be looking at 80 bucks for shipping. It’s worth it.
