As a beginner try and get Sovereigns of the British Empire by captain F pridmore although old now, it tells you all about the Branch mints, and also gives you mintage figures. Marshes book is good, but you may find it a little advanced for you.

Many people have asked me why are so many sovereigns in mint condition are not worn. The reason is very simple many gold sovereigns never left bank vaults. Working people never had gold sovereigns in the old days, they heard about them, and may have seen one, but were never able to own one. Because of this, they never became worn, but many have edge nicks and abbrassions due to being in mint bags. Over the years collectors dealers slabbing companies and now bullion dealers have all gone through them with loops, and they all now sell at premiums from worn pieces. The best pieces in the mint bags being choice sell for a lot more money. The half sovereign is different. Although higher grades are always wanted, one does have to make an allowance, because working people did use them a lot, and so many became worn. All branch pieces are now rare to very rare Perth and Melbourne being the rarest.

The halves are rare because they were removed from circulation more and replaced by the mint more often. However fewer people have an interest in halves so that provided a counter balance

Halve sovereigns are not rare, only Australian pieces, but all halves in general are scarcer then full Sovereigns depending on what pieces they are.@@Numistacker

Numistacker I am not sure where you got your information concerning worn half sovereign were replaced, but that was not the case. My Royal mint files which I have concerning Full and half sovereigns does not say anything about any of this. However many early worn sovereign, held by the Bank of England in 1895 were taken in and melted down, to produce the 1892 half sovereign. This year was the only year, that produced the highest number of half sovereigns produced, just over 13million.However even thought this was highest number produced, they are far short from the huge numbers produced by the London mint from 1911 to 1915. There were four dies cut of the 1892 half sovereign that is why there is differences of the shield being higher and lower. This was also the case with the Australia jubilee halfs, because the dies were made at the Royal mint, and shipped out to the Branch mints Australia.

I have both the 1916 and 1917 London mint. You may be interested to know that their are two types of the 1917 Sovereigns. one has a wide milling, and the other is narrow. Both the 1916 and the 1917 were as you said, melted by the American mint because it was under their constitution to melt British gold Sovereigns, for payment. The 1925 London sovereign also had two types wide milling and narrow milling. They were struck in 1949 1950 1951 and 1952 but dated 1925, to make payments for military arms from America, Which we used in the Korean war. The Royal mint decided not to make a die of the then king George V1 as they were told by the MOD to cut costs, so a recut die of George V was used, Hope you find this of interest.

I worked in a bank in the 60s and collected coins, especially leading up to decimalisation, and got some lovely rarish coins, e.g. EF 1905 2/6 unfortunately no gold! I was then always short of cash....and sold them....for only a few pounds!

It might happen. PCGS have better coin photography than NGC but I always have the Trueview pics of it anytway. It doesnt fit my NGC box so it may be up for cross grading but no rush.
