I think the issue with inputing the wind is it was looking for it in format XXXdegrees/YYYkts, so it wanted 180/010, rather than 180/10..... but who needs to worry about wind, just full power and hope.... which is exactly what you want to hear a pilot say................

Nice job Tim! I was on ex. Lionheart looking after Harriers in a forest, 'somewhere in Germany' in the 80's. My Spartan CVRT was right next to the end of the improvised runway. Let me tell you, they're fu**in LOUD. My section was on a patrol about 600m from the perimeter. We set up a listening post and I was desperate for a piss. I moved away from the section about 20 ft and found a couple of Belgium troops watching in the direction of where we'd been. Anyway, we disarmed them and 'took them prisoner'. On returning a bloke was doing the rounds asking if anyone wanted a flight in a Harrier. (It was endex then). I really wanted to do it. I asked him how much it was. He told me it was a tenner for a 10 min flight, which was a good deal of dosh to an SAC then. I then asked where the dosh was going. He said, 'to the officers mess'. To which I replied, 'no way are they getting my money. Biggest regret. Never mind my nose, cut off my head from pride. Learned from that mate. Grab the opportunity in front of you.

So slick its sick. Great vertical landings, I can't believe these are your first attempts without swimming. Nobody makes their first jump, not even Neo. I remember a retired RAF 1st Sqn Harrier pilot telling me they'd come back to the boat with 90 seconds of fuel remaining. I'm surprised any of them lived past 40 years old with the coronary-inducing pucker factor of that. For DCS folks learning the Harrier you may want to remember to turn ALT warning off when you start, otherwise you will be driven completely bonkers and end up rambling to yourself in KZbin videos. You wouldn't want that to happen :) Cheers Tim. Sometime you might want to try out how bizarrely different the AV-8B's TGP controls are from the other DCS jets (Hornet/Viper) ?

My favorite DCS module! No Harrier aviators are not normal. But they are not abbeynormal either. In fact, IMHO, in some regimes, Harrier is a safer aircraft to fly, then any other fixed wing fast jet. Landing in near zero viz weather on conventional runway. As long you are within proper gross weight. That is no stores, except 2 X AIM-9M, and 1500 lbs of fuel or less (900-1000 is best), you can approach using AWLS (ILS) and TACAN, with low sub 100 knots IAS, at low 5 AOA. At 1000 lbs of fuel or less, you dont need water. Have it on, but running out is not a disaster.With nozzles at 60% you can safely approach threshhold at 50-60 knots IAS. Thats speed of a car on motorway. You have plenty of time and power to correct approach, or execute missed approach. At 50-60 knots, you can approach runway from an azimuth straight into wind, being mindfull of obstacles. Carrier landings are far easier in Harrier then in F/A-18C or A-4E. Two things. Harrier does not like crosswinds. When crabbing to touchdown, straighten flightpath just before touch down, or suffer damaged outrigers. Harriers do not like snap high G rolls and sustained high G turn. AV-8 is not an F-16 or Mig-29 or F/A-18C. IMHO, most difficult dask in DCS:ABV-8B and in DCS as a whole is inflight refueling a Harrier. This is DCS equivalent of Daniel-son catching fly with chopsticks. Harrier pilot should fight air-air like a barn cat. Quick vicious strike with claws, then separate and run away. So don't seek dogfights. If caught, turn to kill or fire a Fox2 putting threat on defensive. Then either kill with second FOX2, or guns, separate and runaway. If possible. I wish RAZBAM would add Scorpion HMQS and AIM-9X Blk II. Better yet, make it Harrier Plus+ replacing ARBS with radar, and adding AIM-120 as a munition.
@davefloyd9443 Жыл бұрын
That's interesting. Just goes to show what a flexible design the Harrier truly was. There is the AV8-B's legendary air to ground accuracy, and yet the Sea Harrier guys were dangerous A2A opponents. They could kill you at range with their radar and AMRAAM's, or if you got through to the merge, they could out turn you by 'nozzle biting'. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4vCc4B4e8iWfNE&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE
@dkoz8321 Жыл бұрын
@@davefloyd9443 Sea Harrier pilots did not have AMRAAM during Falklands. They did have then new and classified AIM-9L Sidewinder. First effective all aspect version of Missile. Argentinians had older narrow cone rear aspect AIM-9C on their A-4B and C Skyhawks. Argentinian Air Force had IAI Nesher and Mirage III with early Python missiles , which were also rear aspect. But that MirageIII , Nesher, Python combination had distinguished itself during 1967 and 1973 Arab-Israeli wars. What differentiated Royal Navy pilots and Argentinian airmen was level of training, competence, and institutional culture. Argentinians were NOT incompetent or untrained. Quote reverse , and got their hits in. Especially in air anti-surface warfare. Sinking number of British vessels. Royal Navy had advantage in two attack submarines in theater, against which Argentinians had no defense. Their ASW capabilities were Korean War level , and had no way to counter British nuclear powered boats, which had no need to refuel or recharge batteries. It was Royal Navy attack submarines that drove Argentinian Navy to port, where they stayed, after cruiser Belgrano was sunk. All Argentinian Navy strikes , after sinking, were done by Argentinian Naval Aviation Skyhawks .
