The curse is lifting because he himself are changing. His character/personality is not the same Kratos from GoWIII. Most of his magic in GoWIII was powered by hope and the weopons he acquired. Hope was released by the Sword of Olympus to the people of Greece for them to rebuild. Kratos' immortality is bound by his nature since he is a god. Tartarus is a primordial place which cannot be destroyed. His powers are actually tied to that place when he received his Blades of Chaos. This is the reason he can still activate Spartan Rage and all his powers with the Blades are all fire based. This is also the reason he cannot get rid of the blades. It is part of his godhood. Kratos' powers are actually closer to the Titans because of this.

most of kratos’s power in gow 3 was spartan rage and blades of exile, which he fueled its power with his own god essence, kratos also uses spartan rage in ghost of sparta for the first time, kratos combined spartan rage with the blade of olympus making him completely invulnerable, canonically the blades of exile were the most powerful weapons through gow 3 and more powerful than all of the gods weapons

I don't think he lives long due to a curse. The curse is not to live forever, but to not be able to kill himself by suicide. Kratos simply lives forever because he's a God, not due to a curse. I also think that part of the reason why the Blades still have power is due to them having some essence of the primordial Chaos embedded in them (since they ARE after all the Blades OF CHAOS).

I doubt they are made with Chaos, we have little to no proof of that being the case, primordial fire on the other hand - sure. Chaos is the strongest primordial in the entirety of Greek Mythology more ancient and powerful than Olympians and Titans combined and precedes the universe, origins of blades are murky but they were either made by Ares himself or Hephaustus (suggested by the novel of first 2 games) in the depths of Hades, I doubt that Ares or Hephaustus had any power over Chaos or his essence, not to mention that any weapon made from Chaos would be more powerful than the Blade of Olympus and Zeus not only wouldnt allow that but would also want such power to himself and if Ares has access to chaos it doesnt make sense that his superior does not, not to say that no one seems to be much interested in Blades of Chaos while they should be much scarier than even Blade of Olympus. Plus, even if Ares had the essence of Chaos to go around making weapons why wouldnt he claim it for himself and instead just gift it to his minion? Now primordial fire is much more fitting - Surtr confirms that the blades have primordial fire in them, being PRIMORDIAL would explain why the fire in them burns hot even in Hellheim and why blades still function in the Norse realm - because primordial powers are shared throughout mythologies and not tied to any land or god. I would also think that unlike Chaos, primordial fire is much more common and while extraordinarely powerful not exclusive to Blades of Chaos (Primordial Fire is wielded by both Hyperion and Helios), therefore not feared as much by other gods

Another thing to consider? Kratos' family grew. It is no longer his firsþ wife and Calliope. Laufey, Atreas, Mimir, and more than likely Brok and Freya are now a part of it as well. The ash could simply be dull because he has more family and less to grieve. Similarly, the blades aint a factor in this conversation. Surtr recognized their magic as primordial fire. More than likely that Muspelheim and Tarterus are both tied to the original flame. Its the nature of a thing that matters. Not its form.

To bolster your theory even further, it’s pretty much confirmed that the Oracle who cursed him was Tisiphone one of the furies. In Ascension his ashes were fresh but also seemed the most burdening but after he killed them the ashes started looking more and more pale and until in GoW 3 they became the palest and now in 4 they are starting to fade away. It seems like the curse was already weaker before but with the death of his homeland the curse truly died. And perhaps some of the Hope inside him also washes this curse away too, as we know that it is more than magic and can outlive it.

The ashes are fading because he's doing good in the world, it started with giving Greece hope. He isn't solely responsible for the death of the Gods, they met their own demise at their own hands for the most part because of their own actions. He's not even solely responsible for the destruction and Chaos of Greece, I think as shown with Hera, Greece is tied to the Gods so that kind of brings back the idea that his powers are tied to Greece as well. But in theory the powers given to him would be bound to him as long as he's a live you would think, cuz it wasn't Zeus in God of War 2 that took his powers, he put his own powers into the Blade of Olympus. Cory barlog is going to have to write dialog on this in the next comic they release, cuz this ones hard to know. At least this is posed at the fan Theory, as opposed to being something more than that aside from being fun fan research.
@godzillazfriction
@godzillazfriction Жыл бұрын
but hes literally responsible for the death of Greece... you dont know that Kratos wanted to sacrifice himself for mankind since he hates humanity and hates himself.... Zeus forbid other Gods fighting each other so that the mortals can have their own kingdom or whatever... and kratos killed them which lead to the destruction of Greece as a whole... Kratos already showed signs of causing mass destruction that the Gods were concerned about like how he destroyed Atlantis which Kratos didnt even care about destroying it... then after Ghos of Sparta, he basically became just like Ares which is why the Gods or primarily zeus needed to take action

There is a thing in norse myth of wich "that which is remembered ives". Kratos may be haunting himself and the story of the later GoW games may just be his journey to forgive himself for the past. Kratos has a lot of pain and destruction in his wake. I think the last two games are him learning both how to move past that wreckage of his traumatic life and forgive himself through the redemption of teaching his son to be better. But the visions of Athena I think are just that, Kratos keeping his old ghosts alive well past their time, and still struggling against them.

I think Kratos is not cursed to live forever, he is just very difficult to kill. Remember in previous games he has escaped or conquered death multiple times. He slayed both Hades, the lord of the dead and Hades' wife. In addition Kratos killed the god of death who existed before Zeus and possibly before the titans. If Death was this ancient, he may have been beyond the mythos of Greece and killing him may have given Kratos immortality or close to it. As for the blades, they themselves were crafted in Tartarus, but the material used to make them may have existed before the gods and titans as Surtr claimed that they had primordial flames in them. This may mean that they predate almost any mythology which explains why Kratos can't get rid of them. As for the ashes, they could be tied into the one that they were placed on. Kratos felt guilt for killing his family for so many years, but Valhalla he reveals that Ares was ultimately responsible for blinding him with rage. Kratos is slowly learning to accept what he did in the past and that his actions were not in simple colors of black and white but grey. I also suspect his second family helped him to forgive himself and not dwell on the past as much as he did in the original games.

Counter theory his god status body is instead absorbing the ashes. Instead of previously rejecting the power of the blades of chaos represent. And its the fact that Kratos is learning to come accept what has happened that is allowing him to grow stronger with the weapons he is gaining. Rather than the weapons being the godly power. As a result overall Kratos is getting STRONGER. However of course I would not be surprised if this ultimately comes as a double edged sword. Like the Zeus's sword, that will inevitably burn Kratos once again. As in Kratos gets so powerful that his strength consumes his defenses. In which he becomes a glass cannon. By becoming the ultimate god of war he becomes the ultimate weapon. The only issue with the "ultimate weapon." Is it ultimately can serve only one purpose and thats to destroy. Not defend.

I would think it symbolizes he’s forgiven HIMSELF, if anything. His family’s feelings never seemed to factor into it that much. Kratos’ own self-hatred and self-sabotaging has ALWAYS been his downfall.

Your theory regarding the orbs is interesting, but I do think they are a gameplay thing. I would need to search, but I think at some point in the series, it is mentioned something about the bloods bathing in the enemies' blood, that would explain the red. Another thing, the fire in the blades comes from absorbing it from that titan in Ghost of Sparta, killing it. I think the powers Kratos is mentioning is something that we didn't necessarily see, the way they word it, it's like every god could use every element, not sure if that would be the case, but it would make sense considering how Mimir was so impressed, after all, Nordic gods only have one attribute, like Thor and his lighting powers alone. Another possibility would be the ability to become a giant like we see in GOW 2, sure those powers were taken in that game, but in GOW 3, he pierced the Blade of Olympus in his belly, thus maybe transfering his powers back. I think this makes sense because Kratos is still a god to this day.

I think the ashes fading is partially from the magic that cursed him dying with Greece, along with his wife and daughter forgiving him for what he did. But the only reason they haven’t truly faded away is because he is yet to forgive himself for what he did to earn the ashes. And I think if we ever see Kratos die, it would be nice for him to peacefully pass away, the ashes finally fading away for good as Kratos passes away.

I don't think any god has ever 'cursed' him to not die, probably he think someone has cursed him but nobody did, it's simply his denstiy causing him to not die, whenever he's been killed or tried to kill him, he was was saved by someone or the situtation was like that he got saved.

If kratos's ash fades, it means his daughter and wife's souls are out there somewhere waiting to take form or something. Calliope is in the fields of elysium. We don't know if that place was intact when greece got destroyed. Kratos would still be a demi god and live with his old look when he was in the spartan army. My 2 cents. I would like to see someone create a theory vid exclusively on the fields of elysium's status after kratos left.

About those blades and their flames, Sutur himself said that those blades have primordial flames. AKA, flames that came before other flames. Before the gods were born even. So the real reason would be that the Blades of Chaos still retain their flames after the fall of Greece is because those flames are primordial and cannot be extinguished as long as existence exists.

Most likely his ashes and immortality are fading due to his homeland being destroyed. This is evident when he dies to Thor and do to it being literally stated his ashes are fading. As for his blades they’re made of primordial fire combined into the blades. And primordial fire is older than his home land there for the magic in them is not technically tied to Greece but reality itself and therefore making them unable to be destroyed. It would explain his weapons and other things. If your looking for evidence than you can look to the fire giant that becomes ragnarok in gow ragnarok. He states they have primordial fire in them. And this would explain everything.

the thing is look at how he was when the curse was placed apon him he was distraught angry yet upset to his very core the oracle placed the curse on him when he was in this state of mind and he never really had any moment without those feelings in god of war 3 he started key word "started" to come to terms with what he did and started to forgive himself but he stopped for a very long time not long after this was started he tried to bury it try to control his rage as the rage he felt back then blinded him completely he killed cassandra and coliope with his rage in full effect that he had at the time plus didnt anyone notice aswell the angrier he got throughout the games the more apparent the ashes were? the reason they were fading at the start was because he felt he could make up for what he did to his last family to atone for it in some way but his rage was still there so it was a very slow and gradual degredation of the ashes whenever he would lose it his ashes became more apparent even in 2018 when he let it out against thor in the first fight he was horrified he slipped everything came rushing back as if to say "you do this you let this rage out again the same thing will happen" the reason his ashes arnt as apparent now could be that the curse is as strong as his rage the rage is still there deep inside fighting to surface but he is trying to hold it back keep it under control and he does struggle. and for those who want to include the Ascencion game or before anyone says "how come his ashes were fully appearal then he had no memory of what happened as it was locked" the curse was still fresh for one it was still at its strongest especially considering he defied aries not long after his family were killed so max this was like what afew weeks at lowest max a couple months after this curse was placed on him? it was in the stride of the time it was cast on him then it got worse after his memories were unlocked after the furys and the son were killed then his rage sadness regret all these deep steep bad emotions surfaced and they never left, and now he still tries to forgive not just himself for that as he obviously still blames himself but to reflect on what he did and try to see it deeper then just "oh they killed me so i killed them back" it was never about the getting them back because they did it to him there were deeper reasons for this that he never really thought about, yes the curse cast apon him was greek but it's not the type everyone normally thinks of, its more of a self sustaining from the heart of the 1 who is cursed, and the magic he has tried to recall but can't it could be the orbs or it could be another power that only he knew about that he thought was greek, we are talking about a guy who did the impossible on the daily climbing out of hell itself defeating titans and gods taking out beings that only the gods were thought could face, i think its something he needs to find a piece of himself that he lost back then and canot recall it without it, being homesick can do many things people think wouldnt be relevent, all i ask is dont think of the obvious and the rediculous over zealous mearly only think of what its like for someone who knew nothing but war and lost everything he ever knew, curses only mearly amplify whats already there with the smallest little thing added in this case his familys ashes but the rest was what he had inside all along and what he did amplified it way more then he ever could have thought

Kratos' blades are forged with Primordial Fire, meaning the power that the blades are drawing from is not locked to a set land, so while the power he fed to strengthen the blades did come from Greece, only the location of creation of the blades is a factor, and that location was the Primordial domain of death that shares its master's name, which means that the loss of Greece means little to the blades' actual power, only the loss of what was fed into it. And Kratos does gain strength from slaying enemies, its just in the form of a more typical RPG experience system, which replaced the red orbs entirely. Its also a fact that a god can sow their roots in other realms, as Kratos is still able to call upon the power of his godly rage, that he spent most of Atreus' younger years trying to gain control over, in fear of repeating what happened to get the ashes on him again from his slain family. Its possible that the curse of near immortality plaguing Kratos has its roots settle elsewhere from a single realm, if not directly tied to him directly, as far as I'm aware, the curse was placed on him after his ruination of Greece.

I have a theory about why the blades of chaos are eternalaly bound to Kratos and what happened to them in between in games. My theory is that the Blades of Athena are the Blades of Chaos enchanted by Athena so that Kratos would not recognize them. On top of that someone in the higher plane for gods is who cursed the blades to come back to Kratos. These are just theories.

The magic he was trying to recall was the double jump. The curse, i believe, is linked to his guilt, even if the old lady was not a god and already died, her curse will always remains. He probably will never forgive himself, but he's healing thus the ashes are fading. The blades are powered by Kratos and his anger, that's why the spartan rage remains, that's from him and it's a "fire" power, remember that he consumed the Fire of Olympus (Rage of the gods is no longe available, Rage of the Titans no longer available as well, but the Rage of Sparta is and Sparta is long gone). Also greece and mankind there lives, so this powers are still alive just not all of them. Remember that the gods in the God of War universe are related to elements or forces, like fire, lighting, water, time, space, and so on, they can give the powers to other or artifacts but usually is temporarily, and they can take away what they bestowed. In short: Kratos god powers are the fire from within, cause the blade were "sleeping" until he ignites them again, before they were just powerful and well-crafted blades. Probable Atreus can wield them as well, seen as he has that fire within him (GoW2018 reference)

i think because War will still exist in greece is the reason hes still a god and will be immortal, the domain for his "Magic" is over war and death, as long as the cycle continues so will he, the curse on his skin i do believe is because the oracle is dead but its slow due to her bloodline maybe continuing

in Ragnarök Surtr tells that the blades have primordial flames in them, which i believe has no place of origin and by that regard never actually die out. as for Kratos's curse, well considering how he is viewed at the end of the GoW: ragnarök he is no longer a destroyer of worlds, that would explain why the curse is lifting.

Well there's still a few Greek gods Kratos didn't kill, grease was left morso in chaos, then a place of non-existent. Hope against corruption I must say, isn't much power otherwise it would have more influence, which in today's society it doesn't Play along with hope that, gave the powers back to a plane of existence which would be greased. Now if the powers he gained during God of War 1-3 (psp) are the ones he's referring to, those are still the ability of the Gods bestowed upon him which would still make those Powers his to weld even with the death of the Gods that gave him those powers. I'd prefer him to have said (I renounced those abilities) then say (those are powers he could not summon.) Or more or less tried to but couldn't. Hey in the next God of War he won't have good Leviathan axe, it doesn't make sense for him to wield it. That final battle with Zeus is how he lost his powers, you could say when he gave Greece hope. Think of what happened after he defeated Zeus, wandering around, didn't that scene effectively showcase him losing his abilities, or in a sense even giving them up? Well that's my thought on it, this is speech-to-text so I hope you can understand it.

my headcanon is that he chose to keep ashes of his family. And as he forgives himself and continues to move on he is losing them. He put ashes of Faye where she wanted. Similarly his old family would have wanted him to become a better man. Similarly here when he feels he is becoming a better person he is letting them go. When he re-builds peace in greece and norse he will let all of them go.

"he left his powers back on olympus" lol I think him choosing not to use them is more acceptable and logical. Plus they wouldnt give us op abilities in the beginning of the game. You say it like he can just put them down like weapons. The spear and shield on Deimos grave makes sense but burying powers???? That makes NO sense dude come on. It really feels like you're coming up with whatever just to make a point. Krato's curse is not fading away. It's like saying the blades of chaos stopped working because Olympus was destroyed. They got magical like qualities sooooooo how do they still work then? The powers he has are completely different from the curse he was given. Curses isnt typical magic, it's different, it's a curse. Curses are just a completely different genre so to speak from normal magic. The ashes are fashioned to his skin NEVER to be removed. What i'm saying is his curses won't fade like the magic he had did. Think of it as permanent stats

That thos change in him. This remorse and acceptance is part of the key to break the curse. Thus it's hold on him is weakening.

I think just like the explanation as to why Greek magic and abilities cannot be used anymore in the nord region, is because the curse is also tied to that land as well. So him going out of that Pantheon's influence slowly fades the curse... I think this is not meer speculation, but somewhat of a fact... Either due to distance or cannot be activated on another pantheon's influence. Since: A. Blade of Olympus during the Titan battles did not wipe out the Giants as well. Since you would technically classify them as both species... ie Gigantic Primordials. B. Tyr who we now see using other land's weapons doesn't use some skills there to complement the weapon (which as a god of war, is really confusing... as we see kratos being the only one who switched to using nordern magic to some degree in the newer games) C. Atreus cannot use any Greek magic as well... Which even if Kratos doesn't teach him to become a Spartan, will probably teach him atleast how to use greek magic to protect himself on his own. (He can use his Giant magic, and his power as god which hurt him at first due to not knowing he is part god... but never specifically greek magic) D. It seems Kratos still has Herme's boots in GOW4, but it was never used and is on Kratos' home only... (it's in the trailer, but not in the game. This may not be canon, but I'll point it out since it's relative to the topic) E. No other being uses another pantheon's magic on their realms, not even once... You'd think atleast Mimir with his experience from all sots of employers would learn a thing or two on how to use other magic beside from Nordern magic. (And Odin, you'd think he'll seek a magic to peer into that crack in reality right? Considering he is a god of wisdom like Athena?) The Magic system Freya is saying is likely the system their world uses, which is land based magic. And yes this is actually a magic system that exist in fiction long before this, albeit not really popular as it just sucks as a story standpoint. Also pointing it out, NO. Kratos does not live long due to the curse (except it preventing him from taking the "short way out"), and the reason as to why the blades of chaos does not lose it's power is because it is made from primordial fire... which ties it's power to it's own, and Kratos is the one the blades are tied to (physically and with his soul) Talking about curses, I think since it's a relatively minor curse (just sticking ashes to his skin, and not really a dangerous curse at that), it takes a lot longer to fade than stronger curses (which needs a medium and thus must be maintained constantly, otherwise it will be dispelled easily now that no one's maintaining it)... Same goes for here as the ashes starts fading after he killed the Oracle (now just a lot of time had passed so it's more noticable the ashes faded more)

What if, the reason that the curse is slowly lifting is because that Kratos is not the monster he used to be. He is not an agent of destruction anymore, he wants to help rebuild. The mural in the end of God of War Ragnarok shows us that Kratos will be worshiped by the Midgardians. So is Faye part of the lifting of the curse? She tamed the "beast" and helped him start anew, creating a family with him. Helped him change. Helped to be the father he never was with his daughter. He needed that push to change and to become the change for others as well. And now with the help of Freya and his friend "head" (Mimir), he might be able to achieve the change he is destined to do.

i don't know the deeper lore of Gow but what if the Greek gods got reborn as their Roman counterparts, this kind of is supported by the whole immortality curse's still being there on Kratos as maybe the god simply got reborn thus reinforcing the curse, another thing that could support this is Kratos seeing visions of Athena, with what he is seeing literally being the ghostly remains of Athena in the Goddess Minerva. also maybe about Kratos's ashen skin curse still being there is because he unknowingly keeps it on himself due to the guilt? and maybe it fading away is him slowly forgiving himself?

The blades of Chaos are not powered by Greek Magic, they’re powered by primordial fire(as told by surtir) which precedes all magic as it is the fire of creation. As for Greece I don’t think it’s really dead but rather the embodiments of its aspects died(aka the gods) and thus those aspects have become chaotic and free leading to the age of Mankind.
