Even if the owners actually release the handbrake? Ever seen brake pads worn out in under 2000 miles and the calipers looked like they had been BBQ'd. We originally thought seized calipers but it was a low mileage fairly new car, customer also complained about poor fuel economy which tied in with seized caliper(s). It was only when we got him to pull the car into the bay and we spotted he didn't release the handbrake we realised it was him not the car although the pads, discs and calipers all needed replacing.

I had UniRoyal RainSport tyres on my XC90 when I got it. They were excellent. I replaced them with Michelin CrossClimate 2, which seemed to win all of the tyre reviews, and they're dreadful in comparison. Noisier, worse in the wet... I imagine they're better in ice & snow, but we don't seem to get much of that these days, so I'll be switching back to UniRoyal when these Michelins wear out.

A week after putting budget tyres all round on my Peugeot 405, the back end went on a wet bend, causing me to drive into an embankment, flipping the car, rear over front, coming down across the road on it's roof. By a miracle no-one was hurt! I had stopped the tyre fitter putting Vredersteins on, telling him I didn't want those, I wanted budgets! Cheap tyres are fine until you find yourself in an extreme situation when the grip's pushed to the limit. Of course you could drive for years and never have a situation, but for the saving of a few quid, I just don't believe it's worth it. Hi Geoff. I had landsails on a 2001 Passat last year. They were in good nick and I didn’t plan on keeping the car long so I stuck with them. One evening on my way home I went round a corner to discover a deer on one side of the road and her young on the other side. I immediately braked hard and the abs kicked in, the baby deer ran into the hedge and I was relieved that there was a gap for me. Unfortunately the mother ran across to join her baby at the last moment and I hit her at between 5 and 10pm. She bounced off the front of my car (causing minimal damage) and lay at the side of the road winded. I got out and the poor thing was gasping for air. Luckily she jumped up after about 30 seconds and ran off. On my current Mercedes 190d I have new Michelins and it definitely stops noticeably quicker. I could have saved the pain for that poor deer if I had better tyres and it’s a really good job it wasn’t a child In the road. Could have been a tragedy. It’s stuck with me and now I won’t have budget tyres.

A bit of actual user advice here instead of just pointless tyre snobbery. I’ve been using 388 and 588 Landsail tyres since 2016 across 5 different cars at over 30k miles a year. The 388’s are a midrange budget tyre that last well and have good grip in wet and dry. The 588’s are a very impressive tyre in all conditions, they have more wet and dry grip than the continentals they replaced. I do a lot of miles for work in various of our company vehicles which all now have Landsails on, no issues at all. Also, my main hobby is trackdays, usually 10 a year so it’s not as if I don’t know what grip is and no I don’t work for Landsail.

I worked for over 40 years in the tyre/ fast fit industry. Today most tyres are made in the same factories from the same raw materials, they simply have different brand names embossed on them. Where we are seeing problems arise is not due to any particular brand being inferior to another but from EU environmental legislation which as banned the use of certain materials in their manufacture reducing the efficiency and durability of the rubber compounds.

Have you seen a tyre comparison between budget and premium? If they're all the same how do they perform so differently? Watch an unbiased tyre review between budget and premium, particularly wet weather handling and braking, the results prove huge differences that can mean the difference between stopping or hitting something. I know from my own experience that pemium tyres grip better than cheap ones. Yes, Some premium tyre companies own budget brands but that doesn't mean the tyres are the same. Vw owns lamborghini but that doesn't mean a polo and an aventador are the same car.

My dad has a small car shop and also makes tyre changes. Landsail, Ling Long, Imperial, King Miler, Double Coin and a few others are blacklisted and won't be fitted. They are fine until they aren't and usually that would be your rear going away on a wet road and even if it grips again you'll have so much lock that you either shoot off or have so much weight transfer that it's very unlikely to keep it on the road. We usually use Hankook as a baseline reference as far as price performance go unless there have been surprisingly good models from other reasonably priced brands or Hankook made a bad tyre (which are usually the fuel saver, ev and what not things). Also, if you look up tyre reviews, ignore the overall ratings and focus on wet (and snow for winters) handling/braking. It doesn't matter how much noise it makes or if it saves a marginal amount of fuel if it doesn't perform where it counts.

I recently bought Four AVON tyres for my trusty old Saxo and the only thing I was really interested in was how they performed in the wet. If tyre's perform well in the wet they must be okey in the dry. So far that theory seems to be holding up.

Thought I'd give some feedback after having used landsails for a few years on my car. It's not a big expensive car, just an astra mk4 coupe convertible 1.8. I had to get some new tyres a few years back abs money was tight, so I opted for landsails. After about a year and a half of driving including 4 commutes a week around 100 miles each, the fronts needed replacing. I swapped the rats to the front and got a matching set again for the rear. Overall on a low power front wheel drive car they performed brilliantly. Yes, on my other car (944 Turbo) I may have second thoughts going down the budget route, but on this car they hold on surprisingly well. They ga Ive a good balanced feel, they don't seem to let go, they squeal on/near the edge and feel relatively progressive. I'm not sure if they are particularly good, or if the fact that the car has 4 matched tyres is the reason it handles fairly well (the car is on a refreshed chassis, oem rubbers, joints, shocks and springs - not uprated). I've had friends also into spirited diving that have remarked how well they hold on and turn in and one had even tried them and now has the same regard for them that I do. Of your on a budget, these are great. If you want to take 400hp+ round the ring, then yeah, spend a little more . They do wear a lithe quicker than other cheap tyres, but given the grip and breaking I've experienced from them, they are a good or possibly better than (more expensive) cheap alternatives from branded manufacturers. I'll buy them again and would recommend to friends and family on a budget

Forgot to mention that progressive driving on the wet can still allow for impressively brisk travel. Wet breaking, wet corners can all be taken to the point before traction control and esp kick in, it doesn't just flop into relying on the gadgets to make up for poor grip.

I work in the car industry and we had a guy arguing the cost of his MOT on his BMW 1 series. He needed two new rear tyres, he was given the choice of two tyres what the car came with or budget. He chose budget. 1 week later he came back in kicking off that the tyres need changing as he span out going around a roundabout. Those were Landsail tyres. Im currently needing all 4 tyres replaced on my 20 year old Celica. And Im getting Bridgestone Turanzas which probably will double the value of the vehicle when fitted... but I drive down country lanes in all weather and i cant take the risk of ending up in a farmers field.

Now living in milder winter weather and some years ago I needed winter tyres but I didn't drive long distances so there was no need for a "serious" studded tire so I bought a set of Landsail friction tyres, 225/45 17, how bad could they be? And I must admit I was surprised how good they were on snow, slush, light ice. Worked fine for me, but I grew up on snow and has spent quite a few liters of petrol skidding around in my youth, practice makes perfect(on abandoned parking lots, deserted roads etc.). So there's a bit of experience to help too. But for longer commutes I would've gone for a brand tyre in that case.

I drive thousands of miles a year and as an ex Police Interceptor I know how to drive to limits and drive cars hard sometimes. Ive even used them on track. By far the best combination of cost vs performance..

A mate is a tyre tester for a well known brand. At 70mph in wet, the braking distance can be 10 meters longer on budgets. It's a measurable fact. Then there's the tyre reviews guy on youtube, they come last in every tyre test. 'My mate bob says they are great' is not a measurable fact. The tyre structure itself is even weaker. So more chance of a blowout if hitting a pothole. You're right, on a cheap car without much power, I wouldn't want to spend big with premiums, mid range would be fine. But never go budgets. Also, Peugeot definitely don't fit landsails from new! But a cheap ass main dealer might have put some on.

@@adriches406 That's not an even remotely similar comparison. Preventing a possible rear end shunt by keeping 10m further back from the car in front is going to actually prevent the shunt. Not wearing a seatbelt is going to be utterly useless in the event you slide on ice and slide into a tree, even if you had £200 per corner tyres on. On top of that, you won't attract 3 points on your licence by keeping an extra 10m between you and the car in front

I work in the motor trade and I've always seen that Landsail always prematurely crack and dry out between the treads within a year or so. The tread lasts, but we don't fit them any more because of this. RoadX are a good budget tyre that I've used for myself on my Saab and Vectra in the past when I couldn't stretch to Goodyears. The used to be branded as Jinyu and Evergreen.

I just replaced my Kumho tyres with a set of Far Road tyres which were NZ$200 cheaper each. The Kumho's were fantastic and lasted for 94,500 km. I don't expect the new tyres to last anywhere near as long, but I was pleasantly surprised how quiet they are, and they performed very well on a long trip which had a day of very wet weather and lots of windy, hilly roads. We also went up a steep, narrow, slightly wet gravel road and they had no problems.

I bought a set of ling long tyres 4 my Audi a4 Quattro many years ago. I did 40 thousand miles on them and they still had 4 mil of tread left. the sidewalls started leaking and cracking before the tread wore out . They were acceptable in the dry but were awful in the wet but as it was 4 wheel drive I didn’t really care . Now I have an a6 I tend to buy accelara tyres don’t know how they rate in tests but I’ve had 3 sets and they hold the road well and last over 30 k and are reasonably priced so I’m sticking with them.

bought a pair once, not again. OK when new but wear fast and grip levels fall fast. Front ends are a lot more expensive than decent tyres. Avons are a good compromise for new or high end brand part worns with 6+mm left on them which should be about the same cost as the ditchfinders.

I had a reason to drive my daughters car, which had 2 Landsails at the front, in the wet, on a roundabout I take at 30mph in my Skoda Superb on Michelin Cross Climate 2's (not an advert), and I slid to the outside of the roundabout. I couldn't let her go on with those and swapped them for Cross Climate 2's, from Kwik Fit, at a fair price and importantly, with KF's tyre insurance, which gives you three puncture repairs for free, or a new tyre if they can't plug the puncture. I've claimed for a replacement once after 1 of mine was deliberately slashed in the sidewall. £15 to insure a £150 tyre. It's the way to go for me.

Bouncy, wallowy ride and unsteady. ( no issues before this) Had them re-balanced, checked alloys for damage like buckling /warping. Had entire car checked over 3x,including Jaguar specialist - everything fine. Discs and pads were new. Specialist suspects budget tyres as he's encountered this before. Having a donor set swapped on this week, hopefully this should point towards tyres. If so, swapping for Michelin Pilots😬

Landsails all round on the saab before winter last year. I cant fault them. I drive the car gently for the most part and they havent given me a single concern and no lack of grip over winter. They havent understeered or over steered when on the odd occasion I am pushing on. They havent ever struggled for grip when pulling away at haste with the turbo coming in on the diesel saab. My sports car has cup2 for road and semi slicks for track and I have had many other performance tyres over the years, so I have experience of expensive tyres. Big up the landsails!

Quite a few years ago i worked in a lab for a large oil company. We were reverse engineering tyre compounds to target sales of butyls. Tyres are quite complicated chemical compounds - and thats before you get into proprietary tread designs etc. "Budget" tyres back then at least, were bulked out with clays. They often test well when new, but have a short effective life - ie their performance would change (degrade) as they wear and while still having useful tread, things like temperature stability could make them unpredictable in operation. To people commenting on tyres and other parts being made in china, that is something completely different - id be 100% confident tyres made by Michelin in China are the same as those made in France.
