The original prototype concept of these virtual keyboards was far more exotic. It consisted of two tapered aluminum pieces that looked like two fountain pens with an included tiny fold up holder. One pen body would be pointed in the holder diagonally down towards a flat surface that the holder was sitting on, while the other pen body would be pointed directly towards a flat vertical surface such as an immediate adjacent wall. The two were paired to a smart phone or laptop. The laser projected red virtual keyboard with boldly double outlined keys all resultant from the lower diagonally positioned downward pen body was the same width and depth as a mechanical computer keyboard with substantively spaced, easily manipulated, somewhat rectangular keys which when touched would illuminate brighter, and a sound from each keystroke was instantly produced on the paired device that had a very high voltage like electrical “zorp zorp zorp” type of sound. The upper pen body aimed at the wall surface clearly reproduced whatever was showing on the screen or monitor of the paired device. The complete three piece unit fit into a person’s shirt pocket looking like nothing more than a pair of matching aluminum bodied fountain pens with slid on typical clips to secure them on the pocket edge like any writing instrument might be affixed in the same manner. I’ve looked in vain for a photo image of the unit, but nothing turns up any more whereas several years ago I did then still find a photo or two as well as a KZbin video upload where the device was demonstrated briefly. I always recall how truly captivatingly bizarre it was when being utilized in that video via that virtual keyboard due to the rivetingly pronounced electric sound it made along with those spacious somewhat rectangular virtual laser generated double outline delineated keys when they were touched, and would also illuminate brighter at the same time in sync with that “zorp” like electric sound.

This concept could make for a pretty interesting Raspberry Pi compact desktop build. I know the R.Pi 400 is built into a keyboard, but having something built into a small monitor that uses a laser keyboard would be great for a pocket-sized dedicated CLI device.

if you add on an extra sensor position opposite to the projector to pick up the blind spot

I had hoped the kickstarter version would have made some improvements. I worked at Officemax about a decade ago when these things first came out (Made by Celluon) and I could stop help myself. Sadly, I discovered there is an inherent flaw in its design: the detection system is monocular, meaning any key combinations that are in line of sight of each other are impossible. They operate by detecting interruptions with an IR grid that is projected slightly higher than visible projection, but again this makes things that aren't perfectly in line of sight awkward. You have to make sure your fingers come down straight over each key which makes it difficult to use without typos. I wished they worked. But they don't. It's a party favor if you want to geek out. They original retailed for around $100, but some are as cheap as $40 these days. If you still want to geek out, get the cheap one because you will get the same mileage out of it.

Laser keyboards are kinda cool. Maybe in the future when we have some sort of ‘haptic’ and holographic stuff haha that would be so nice. Super portable keyboard then

What if you had a see through desk and the light was sent from beneath the desk? Then you could still interact with the light sensors on the desk accurately without blocking the sensor beneath the table

Sorry for the very late reply! I checked the app again and it's very barebones, so no option there. But if this works over bluetooth on other devices, then I don't see why you couldn't use it with Garageband or something similar. Been a long while since this video though so I don't really remember how it works haha

0:12 Your 14 y/o self could only possibly have been 4 years prior to this video, making you 18 years of age at the time and 20 years currently, yet you make it sound like it's something that happened a gorrillion years ago. Also, hardly anyone was talking about laser keyboards. But props to you for getting this video up, intriguing just how easy it is to make a decent looking video these days.
