Usually when people say wait they mean “hand everyone a card and have them sign up for an email list.” That’s what brings in the money. You’ll make a little money doing art fairs, you’ll make more once they make a purchase from home.

Especially if they weren’t expecting to make a purchase or already went through their budgeted amount for art that month 🥺 I felt so bad today when I couldn’t buy everything I wanted from the amazing artists at a convention but I definitely picked up cards to follow their socials and buy later ❤

fair!! i see a lot of people talk about their income specifically from markets, and others seem to easily be able to make 100s from the market itself, but i definitely think it makes sense that a lot of money comes after. but if that's true that makes me feel like it's even less worth it (for me personally) bc i already have a steady stream of online purchases lol!! great insight but it almost feels like it complicates it more haha!!

@@miolosdamari you can send out monthly or biweekly updates about the art you’ve made, where you’ll be selling, new prints and originals that are available, etc. I’m pretty sure Kelsey Rodrigues has a video on them!

Hey! I actually used to work at the Maitland Art Center out in Orlando, and they have an awesome little artist residency for one artist that rotates every few months. The scenery is gorgeous and you get to meet other artists in the area (Orlando in general is also great for art markets, etc.). It was a large studio/museum space (it doubles as a local museum/historical landmark) owned by one artist who wanted to foster art community in the area, and when you take up residency there you're staying in his old room, lots of history involved. You also are required to give artist talks and teach workshops, but they're relatively low stakes and can be pretty fun. Look into it if it sounds interesting, I think your work would vibe super well with them!

Omg was loving this vlog and then whipped my head around when you mentioned me haha. My residency application process was the same way- I spent like an entire day on it, had never written a statement or bio and was panicking over how professional or serious my work was, binged a bunch of residency content, panicked some more haha. You really deserve it though and hopefully the people reviewing your app can see that!! Its so scary asking for external validation from a place other than social media when that’s what you’re used to!! I hope you get it, I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!!!

Agh! I literally did a market yesterday in the same spot i always do, usually making a few hundred, but an event nearby brought a totally different demographic. And i only made $25! 😂😂😂

Yes, this is pretty common. Markets are a hard way to make a living. They seemed more about getting your name known locally.

That’s how most of the markets I do go. I’ve started considering it a success if I break even. For me I feel like a lot of it comes down to lack of foot traffic at market. There aren’t even people around to look 😭

I love your vlogs, because of how genuine and honest you are. I also struggle with creativity and watching you put in work and take steps to improve has been such an inspiration!! The traditional art world, and all of its pretension is one of the reasons that I’ve always refrain from pursuing any sort of art related career. They are very gatekeepy and it’s so discouraging. I hope you get the residency ❤❤

sorry u havent been having too good of a market experience i wonder if there are more art-focused markets in your area or convention events you could try a lot of people with the mindset to buy pretty prints and stickers def wouldnt hesitate if they saw your pieces! good luck tho i hope you find something that works 😔

I completely understand everything you said about markets! I think a lot of it also depends on the location, if I were to do a market in my nearest town, the stall could look incredible but it wouldn't mean anything because there's barely any foot traffic ❤

Markets can be tough and I understand your frustration - especially when you invest a lot of money from the beginning. I am honestly shocked that you're not making at least over $100 at each show. I personally really like your art and it appears high quality. I started my art career and going to art shows last year thru an apprenticeship and have been doing them with my boyfriend ever since that program ended. Some tips my artist teachers told me is using paper frame mats for prints which a lot of people prefer from fine artists (as it looks more professional), allow some breathing room in your display so people have more time and space to connect with your art (hanging your pieces more often than not), and engaging with people and your crowd. People are more willing to buy if you're just a likable person or happen to share stories that they can relate to within your art versus someone passing by and just admiring. I know work can speak for itself but you really can't depend on that factor. Understanding your demographic is also important to note - you can't always expect people to be as interested in a general weekend market versus a fine art show people pay to enter. You'll continually learn more things as you go along if this is a path you wish to continue to embark on. I know I'm still learning but have been able to make profit and my boyfriend and I have been able to reinvest into ourselves. Talking with other local artists and learning about "good" shows and sometimes even free ones also help! Hell, my boyfriend and I don't have a car and there are tons of supplies we wish we had but don't yet - and we still somehow figure it out and make it work lol. A really good support system is important too and I think its good to vent about your frustrations. I hope this helps and I truly wish you and anyone reading this luck. My art IG is @poserpasta - lets connect fellow artists! We're in this together lol

This is very relatable. I got so excited for markets and then they just broke my spirit slowly. Its so much money up front for no guarantee return. Over time i learned which ones are worth doing and which ones are not. I think doing just the best ones a few times a year is the way to go.

I keep meaning to go back to market Marie just in case you had another booth! Hope you come back for November! Sorry to hear people don’t understand good art booth etiquette. Personally I think people aren’t used to seeing art at marie’s non-art centric focus, but you’re spot on about trying Saint Pete and the holidays!

The artist statement reminds me of the discomfort of writing about myself in cover letters and resumes. A process that has been helpful for me is write a bullet list describing and quantifying what I do, reference and use relevant professional verbs online (in this case search for art action verbs), and then add pronouns. I'm not sure why but it feels less impersonal/conceited when I do it that way. Asking colleagues and friends what they think my strengths are can be helpful to bring to light anything I may take for granted as well. That is so awesome that you applied to the Everglades residency! Congratulations!! It's normal to have those types of "what if's" but I think it's possible they're looking for someone different...and in that case, you've got an advantage! Good luck!! 🍀

So, as someone who is a queer who lives in the Tampa/St. Pete area, I deeefinitely think you should look into St. Pete markets. Also, maybe the things they do around Ybor City? I've only been back here for a year but I was born in this area too. Also, in St. Pete there are more little galleries/coffee shops/things like that, where they may hold small events you could look into as well! (Also yes, I am saying this while being super gleeful and stoked that there are people who come in my area). (I'm still watching the video but I'm posting this before I get distracted and forget)

Maybe you could do a sell in events like anime events I don’t know if you watch anime but even if you don’t. It goes with time I think personally I don’t sell art so I’m not talking from experience but still I think it’s a good place to start if you can and want to do it and think It would suit you anyways good luck on seeling things it’s really exciting to see you grow
