I live in an apartment and use the Field cymbals... In my experience, they really aren't that loud, and certainly not any louder than cheaper rubber cymbals that use a small amount of rubber over the plastic shell, like the Alesis DM10 symbols or the Roland CY-5's, etc. Also, I tend to find that in apartments, its not so much the stick noise that is the problem, its the floor vibrations you really need to look out for. You can adjust your sensitivity settings and play softer if you need less stick volume, but the floor vibrations are a whole other animals.

Really great one & thanks for this, Justin! Speaking of volume, I made the same experiences with my Jobeky cymbals. Though the absolute peaks in volume are almost the same (or not much of a huge difference), it’s the frequency range that’s important. You clearly see that the midrange at around 1-4KHz is louder or more present on the metal ones. And to this frequencies our ears are more sensitive to by nature. I agree on the stick issues, I need a lot more sticks after I had switched to the Jobeky cymbals, where even those rubber tips don’t help as you usually hit the cymbal with the shoulder of the stick. Thanks again for uploading!
@65Drums5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much!! Really good point Mike. The metallic stick noise from hitting the bow area REALLY stands out, oddly enough the perceived loudness is higher than it really is. But hey I guess that's how human ears work, it's that frequency range.

The metal ones sound super clean,if you need to reach for it in song parts, i prefer the bronze, Zil.Gen.electronic, high hats, with the tiny holes, they act as a great, secoundary back up choice, for closed high hat, ride work, with the volume control, as well as the real quite, off switch too.

I live in an apartment. I use cheap accoustic silent cymbals (with holes). They are as thin as usual cymbals. Around the edges I use a simple rubber Band, which reduces noise and prevents damaging my sticks. I am pretty sure, that my hats and other cymbals are not louder than the rubber cymbals I used before. They just have a brighter tone. Thus I confirm, that it is possible to use metal cymbals with great look and feel at an acceptable noise level in an apartment.

I would argue, that the main reasons why two piece hihats are louder are, the overall higher mass, which has its own resonance, plus the air volume enclosed between the two parts will be triggered at its residual frequency.

Pretty much went the way I thought this comparison would as heavily coated rubber cymbals would obviously be slightly more dampened than the metal cymbals - both were very noticeable during the doggy test downstairs! I’m an old school drummer/percussionist so it was a revelation to hear how both could be heard down on the floor below. But I have to say I kind of like the electronic sound of the metal cymbals slightly more than the rubber ones - but maybe I just need to her the different “sounds” available in their programmed hubs. I need to learn more about those FIELD cymbals to what’s what! Cheers man!

Good timing! I’m looking at replacing my Strike Pro hi hats. I use the SP for recording and my only complaint is the hi hats. I don’t know if it’s how I set it up, the module or the pads, but it always flips between detecting the bow and edge so I just use the same sound for both, plus the feel of the SP hats is not great.

If all things are considered equal and money and noise aren’t an issue, I think metal electronic cymbals either bought or DIY is the way to go IMO. ESP for hi hat, feel is best, and then obviously they look the best too. Performance wise, Roland is tough to beat as far as rubber hi hats go.

Hey Justin, I have a Roland TDK17 with the hi hat that has the 1 piece top hat & then that plastic thingy underneath... What I'm finding is when I do lifts it doesn't really react at all like a regular acoustic hat especially partial lifts... it would seem that Thaele would be an adjustment setting to set it to respond where you want the partial lift sound to start generating... I'm finding I basically have to lift my foot all the way off the pedal to get the lift sound... Is there anything I can to do to adjust this? And say, for instance, If I used easy drummer with it would that have a setting in it where I can do a partial lift to sound natural? I really really really love your channel and I have learned basically everything I know about e-drums from your channel... if you could respond I would really really really appreciate it I know you're really busy but god this has been driving me crazy so I wanted to see if there was anything I could do without having to purchase the drumming software... THANK YOU 🙏🏻 SO MUCH brother & keep up the AWESOME work!!!

You haven't tried the Tama rubber stick tips, have you? Those suckers do NOT come off! They aren't very well known but they are awesome. The reason why they stay on the tip of the drumstick is that they're not easy to get on them in the first place...you have to wrestle the little s*&$ts but once you have them on there, you are good to go. When it's time to remove them, a little more exercise is needed and then, with a release of vacuum, POP! They come off. I recommend them to everyone.

That’s where all metal cymbals will fail, there’s simply no way to get a response like from a rubber vh-13 because the metal hihat vibrates too much and you can’t get a clean and full transition between open and closed, if you play metal you won’t care...

@rez65415 жыл бұрын
Try different sticks like ahead or wood sticks designed for edrums. They absorb some of the shock of hittiing the pads better then regular sticks. Also I'm not sure how hard you play but that could be a factor too. Many drummers bash way to hard on edrums and it's very unnecessary. I know the adrenaline gets going and you want to play hard but with edrums it's counter productive.
@e8tballz5 жыл бұрын
I concur. Ahead sticks would be a big help, also (even though a lot of people say it’s corny) drummer’s gloves and perhaps get an nylon elbow bra e at your local pharmacy. This will help a lot with absorbing the shock of hitting the pad and it traveling through your hands and up your forearm to elbow. I personally get a lot of pain between my thumb and forefinger.

I’ve been wanting to see this comparison. Especially the Field. ( as usual your dog is ignoring you) . So that was interesting. I live in an area where I can play loud too. I love the look of the Jobeky 20” ride that Mike Luke has. I don’t like the limited playing area though. The new 2019 Fields have a 360 area now. . I might go that route for crashes. I like the ease and sound of your vh10 though. But the ride would be a toss up..the 18 ATV because of size and 360 area, the Field new 20” for the same reason and price and lastly the CY 18 DR if I have the 50 package deal. I’ve seen $2850.00 on Reverb. See if they will send you their new 2019 models. Ask for a hat, ride and crash or two. They would probably do that for you. I’ve seen their new promotions vids and they are awful. I told them that too. I gave them some suggestions. Their new stuff looks great plus the price is lower that the others..not by much..but...thanks as usual for the video.
