Are Minecraft Bedrock's NEW Controls actually... Good?

Minecraft Pocket Edition, found on iPads, iPhones, Android and other mobile devices, had a preview update recently, adding the new mob "Allay", but also added a some new control schemes. There has always been a problem with touch controls on Minecraft Bedrock Edition, but these new MCPE controls are a step in the right direction, at least for now - there definitely are still problems with the controls, that I address in this video. All of this Minecraft Commentary, over some Hive Skywars RTX cinematics and gameplay.

Well it's feedback! Send this to a dev (preferably on feedback site) and they'll definitely consider it. customisable controls would probably be the best option so we can put them wherever we want. I also think it's true especially because put jump in center of the walking controls as you can just brush over it and jump while walking. But now you have to strech your thumb. Moreover you have to use both the index and thumb if you want to build up for example on crosshair mode.

As a general mobile player I’m excited to see the controls be updated, I’ve played since around 2016 so I’m super used to the classic split controls. I really do agree with you points on making it more customisable as currently they do look quite awkward and uncomfortable to use but in the long run I feel like this could be a good update if they pull it off correctly.

Honestly, they should still have a option to keep the old controls as some of us mobile players that are on a other level of PvP will have a hard time to get used to. I myself find the old controls to be alright already and I especially like the touch controls where you can hit without looking directly at someone. But I do gotta say I like the new button where right-click is a completely separate button but then it'll just too many buttons to deal with. They should add a F1 and F5 button as well at around the same place as the pause and chat button.

i appreciate the devs adding a way for us to play competitively and since a lot of mobile players could adapt to using 3 fingers (2 thumbs and right pointer for cam) this gives us way better gameplay experience for pvp gamemodes

Though it would be good to have the ability to do things like speed bridging, I think Minecraft would lose a large sum if its player base since a lot of people (like me) have been practicing for years with the original controls, and having to learn new controls would render all the that useless.

As a mobile content creator myself, this update will definitely change mcpe! Much easier to move with this controls especially the joystick + auto sprint settings will definitely help you to move around quickly than before. This setting is very fun to use for bridging aswell! Altho I can't really say that this setting is good for pvp, I tried it out myself and it's really hard to aim with this control settings. Or maybe I'm just not used to it, I also expected that you can aim or move your screen while holding the attack button but it didn't work. And the sensitivity is not normal, so for PVP I recommend the old touch control settings. Edit: The controls are not that great looking, the joystick is so pixelated but atleast they're doing some changes for mcpe :)

As an experienced mobile player, I mainly use non split controls, the new right click button is amazing but I personally dont think a seperate attack button would be very good. Also the button locations are pretty weird but I’m sure they’ll fix it

You can get these in the full game on version 1.18.30 You have to find "enablenewtouchschemes" on the options.txt file and edit it from 0 to 1 If ya wanna use them on servers such as hive :) Note: they have not released them in the actual game yet, this is just a setting to use them

Just to add to my comments in the video as I’ve had some more time to test it: A lot of mobile players will like this as it’s more user friendly and better for not only combat, but traversing. On top of that, sweaty mobile players who use claw and such will most likely have a better experience. As someone who used to play mobile shooters with claw, this is 100% better. I agree that the controls should be moveable as well, Fortnite mobile for example actually has good mobile button mechanics and makes your customizable placement for the buttons user friendly and easy to use. Something like that would be extremely beneficial for Pocket Edition. Anyways, great video as always real PotatoPie25.

As an experienced mobile player I don’t think that they should add toggle sprint, attack, right click because those are already super easy to do but adding individual buttons are hard for me personally but the joystick is fine allowing pocket edition players to strafe in more directions than keyboard

One thing barely anyone is talking about is how in the old Pocket Edition controls, you can't interact whilst moving your screen, like, imagine 3 zombies in front of you, you'll have to put to crosshair on the zombie, remove your finger from the screen, inflict damage, move your screen, and repeat, but now with the new "Crosshair" option, you can cause damage to mobs whilst moving and screen

Honestly this might even lower the amount of autoclickers on mobile. I have seen so many people who use keymapper just to have more control on their moment. It might even be impossible to autoclick now that there is separate button to attack havent yet tested mobile controls yet tho so idk

No, it doesn't change anything with key mapper. But keymapper is actually really helpful and I use it all the time, there is no reason not to use it as long as it's not for autoclicking.

as a Minecraft mobile player, I want both controls to be added in the options/settings mode where you can select like this: "Controls" Touchscreen controls (Old): whether you can select touch or split touch with just two options. new touch screen controls: where you can select new controls with Joystick in it and it feels like you're playing a PS4 emulator on a phone. I like the new controls but I love the old controls better in my opinion. and trust me, I would not let Mojang replacing old ones to new ones and we will remember the old Minecraft touchscreen controls forever and it will not be forgotten.

My nephew will definitely appreciate this since his biggest problem is his sprinting and jumping, most times he couldn't sprint after he double taps and sometimes he couldn't jump even if he tapped jump.

I've tried to play with this new controls since yesterday.At first I thought the new controls is complex when doing it at pvp but when I got used to it, It's feels like I'm using a controller/ keyboard to play. It's easier to spam the hits and place blocks.They also made it easy to crouch because the made the crouch button only one tap to activate. I suggest playing it with the new buttons off and try configuring some settings.Hiding the analog and not making it static helps a lot.You can also aim while tapping because the joystick is clickable.

For now, my joy stick and the rest of my buttons are on the edge of my phone so they are hard to reach. The left side of the screen should've been as is. I preferred the WASD controls of minecraft pe tbh and the crouch/jump button on mid was saving space, and many ppl will need to spend more time getting used to the new controls. Sure, they need some improvements, but as a mobile player that always hopes that he gets a controller for his phone this is a dream come true. Computer and console players don't know the pain of trying to breed a llama but punching it instead... or trying to break blocks but you place lava... or... well you get the point Edit: Also an idea I have is that they could make items easier to drop without entering your inventory (maybe a button) and also I would like a button to change to 3rd person view without having to enter settings... I use a key mapper app but I have to pause it and unpause it each time I have to change the volume...

I’ve been playing on a mobile device since the release of MCPE. This is a great change and would definitely give mobile players a chance in pvp. Not that there aren’t good mobile players that are way too good, but with this mobile players can play just like pc or console.

The Attack and Interact button should be on upper left corner. This will help player to rotate/move the camera + attack at the same time. The they should move jump and sneak button to the upper right corner, this help in speed bridging.They Should give dropping an item a dedicated button and hide/show on that button which player doesn't need (in pubg or free fire we can hide some additional which player doesn't need for winning the game), they can give hide or show button on F5, F1, F3 ( They should be on bottom right corner in a straight line. Since, the player will use it sometimes). The Player can use claw (mean using up four fingers while playing) for efficient use of button. Thanku for reading 😅😃

i think the current movement buttons are ok because i have a slightly big phone and has swap jump and sneak enabled i could use my index finger to sprint and use my thumb to jump and use all the other movement buttons which makes it easier to move around and to pvp.

I just use my thumbs and for the current controls, I have swap jump and sneak enabled and just slide my thumb down to the jump button while still holding onto the screen. You still keep sprinting whenever you move your thumb to the jump button.

I definitely agree the fact that you can bridge better, but also we need to undermine the fact that pvp is going to change a lot more due to this update with mobile players. For example, let’s say I’m 4v1’ing players in a game of egg wars, the reason I might win or lose is because of spam clicking. Some people can spam click very quickly and some can’t really. Especially some players have insane reach especially for PC and mobile players. I’m not saying mobile controls suck, just people need to learn from pure experience from a game to determine how you can get better at pvp

My problem with the pocket edition controls is that in pc, you can move your camera while hitting/interacting with blocks, but on pocket edition, you can only do one thing, if you are moving your camera, you can't hit/interact with blocks and if you are hitting/interacting with blocks, you can't move your camera and this makes it hard to play pvp games.

I guess I'll give my take on this; I've been playing on mobile for almost 9 years, and I think that the new controls are leagues better than the current ones. It might've taken a while to get accustomed to it because of old habits, but when I figured things out, everything felt so much easier. The moment I knew how to jump bridge with the beta controls, I got mad because a pc or controller player takes this mechanic for granted due to its simplicity. I'm definitely grateful for this preview, but the new controls are certainly not ergonomic. I've been having the same issue of trying to find the best grip to hit fast with good aim, and I still haven't come up a comfortable style. I'm sure that the solution to this would be to allow more modularity to the controls. Give the user the ability to change the size of individual buttons, let them use the d-pad with the new buttons, add a hybrid option between split controls and non-split, heck, make the jump button act like a pc or controller jump button. I definitely have many thoughts and ideas for the new controls, and I wish that Mojang takes their time perfecting these new controls, so that there can finally be some sort of parity between all play-styles.

while the controls can help a player improve in pvp and fast reflexes, minecraft pocket edition was supposed to be a simple edition made for simple actions. It's gonna take a while for us mobile players to get used to these new controls after years of sticking to one control scheme (well, 2 if you count the changing of the crouch button to the right button). i just hope that they're gonna add an option where we can stick to the old controls while having the option to switch to the new one.

I don’t like these new controls at all, but I am happy that I can keep the old controls though. Having to have 2 fingers on the side of the phone isn’t nice at all, and they don’t need to be that high. There is no reason to have separate permanent buttons for each control, it just needs to appear out of thin air like the flying up/down buttons do now. Mojang is cluttering the screen, when they should be decluttering. Or, a completely customizable control layout like Terraria has.

the reason why I believe that they put it on the top or right is so people have to use claw grip where they use like their index finger to click all the buttons and they have their thumb to be able to look around many shooter games like previously mentioned in your video pubg a lot of people use claw grip because you can basically shoot and look around at the same time versus having to move your finger take it off click the fire button move your finger take it off click the fire button and if they had them at the bottom your thumb would be doing all the work and it would basically be like having the old controls back

I personally think the pvp and bridging will be improved with the new controls (it's bonus if there is a customization option). Although for building I believe the old layout was easier to use. I don't usually use split controls so it will really take time for me to get accustomed to the new layout. Also, I believe it will take more time to build since you have to move the camera around everytime you need to place a block. I hope Mojang will be adding a feature where we could switch between the old and new layout controls.

I think this one is better because you dont have to double click to sneak, but i hope the button placements are customizable so players can customize it however they want

if they add a customize hud option, first thing i'm doing is move break/attack to top left and move interact, jump and sneak to bottom left

If anyone has noticed the jump and sneak is above the use button or finger button but in beta it was above the attack button so mojang made it easier for players with less fingers like me

They could make it so that it could be joystick or dpad movement, and it can be customize where it is, just like codm or something, so pvp could be better

I think you are supposed to use the stock with the left thumb and look around with your left index finger and do everything else with your right hand. Thats how a lot of mobile games do it.

I actually toggle "move joystick" and set "thumb opacity" to 20, I also turn off "show action buttons" for my crosshair so that my third finger can only focus on jump sneak and sprint, I actually love the new controls 😀

They should find a way to make it possible for you to use the volume buttons on your phone as the attack/mine button and the place/use button

Nice for Mojang to try to improve the controls, but I ain't going to play Minecraft with that controls. I played pocket edition for a long time and got to used to it. I would suggest just adding some buttons instead of changing. And custom controls will help alot

I think that even if they don't add a customization option you are going yo be able to move them in a texture pack or modifying the apk, if this is possible you could play with 4 fingers and finally move the screen while hitting other players (if I wrote something wrong I am argentinian)

This would make the tablet gaming a lot better but the controls would be cramped up in mobiles. In tablets, there are more finger rooms in which you can tap on but in mobile, you don’t really have that much

All the new buttons are really good, but they really need to add an option for customizable huds because the new button controls are pretty akward

They should make a choice to use the old control if they make the new one release. As a mcpe pvp player for almost a year now, I'm so used to controls now that I can play without hud, it will be a huge change if we have to forcefully change into another one after all that time we grinded for experience to be good enough to use controls properly will be gone. Also the pvp mechanics on that one is very different as I can see from this video.

Things like dule wildling and bundles were eather canned or not added to bedrock because of the touch controls not allowing for them. I hope this fixes this issue.
