An advantage of a multiFX, is that it helps you discover what you like, and what subset of effects you end up using. If everything settles down to a consistent “board”…. You can then go and buy specific pedals and drop the multiFX is you want. As a beginner like me, it should help kill the gas. Now I just need to decide Spark 2 or Ampero Stomp 2.

I find that the main purpose of a multi FX is to find a cheaper way to get all of the effects that you might need but don’t necessarily use regularly. They are not necessarily best of breed but they are good enough. These tend to be marginal effects for me like flangers, chorus, pitch shifters, etc. But for things that I am a stickler for like spring reverb, amp sims and IRs, drives, analog delay,s and some fuzzes, the multi FX just don’t sound as good and I really look for very specific pedals.

I'm always on a budget, but still try and create various ways to have everything I want in my rig. That varies from no effects or a manageable choice of delay and modulation. Recently I realised I could employ my Mooer Prime P1 (which is not amazing, but useable and affordable) in the FX loop of any amp and control it via the bluetooth footswitch, so no trailing cables and easy to add to my pedalboard-amp rig (Quilter Superblock), a combo or just at the end of my pedal chain into a clean amp. Being on a low-budget I've been forced not to indulge in many superior-sounding devices, but it's also helped me realise that I don't really need much to get the job done.

Haha, good timing. We had a little high school band reunion in a park this morning and the idea was to use as much of the original gear from our first concert in late 1983 as possible. So I brought my Camac Space Tiger (great, but short-lived super-strat), my Kitty Hawk Supreme I head and cab, and all my original effects (Ibanez UE-400 and UE-405 multi effects and Ibanez DM1000 digital delay). Your question about multi fx having been cheaper made me do some research. Adjusted for inflation (and our change from German Marks to the EUR), the approximate current price of the UE-400, UE-405, and DM1000 combined would be in the area of 4.030 EUR (approx. 4.375 USD, 3.400 GBP). This is based on my original invoices from 1983 and official inflation charts. Absolutely everything these 3 devices do can be done better, with lower noise floor, and - if desired - in stereo, with e.g. a HX Stomp, an Ampero Stomp, or a Plethora X5. So, no, multi fx have not remotely been cheaper.

I've had the same experience with basically finding my favorite thing in each category and that being all I use in a multi effect or plugin. Which is why I think an all in one solution is the best place to start, even if you decide to go the individual pedal route it's a great way to figure out what types of things you actually like.

I switched from individual pedals to using an HX Effects. I have a couple of my 'indispensable' pedals in the HX Effects' loops (a Neunaber Immerse, and a cheap and cheerful Joyo AC Tone that I use as my preamp stage), but everything else is being done by the HX Effects. I love the flexibility that this gives me - being able to set up completely different 'pedalboards' for different gig types, without an epic rewiring project, is a huge benefit. Are all the effects in the Line6 unit as good as the individual pedals they replaced? Probably not, but the difference isn't anywhere near to negating the benefits of the HX Effects, and I doubt anyone listening would be able to tell the difference anyway!

I've been back and forth multiple times on this account. Context matters a bunch. For live use, I value portability, one-touch-switching, and editability. I experimented with several setups and I think the one I like best is just a plain Helix. The ability to edit with the capacitive touch switches while retaining "gig" view with the scribble strips is crazy helpful. Then the two modes -- I use 4 snap + 4 stomp as mode "A", and 10 stomp as mode "B", with the extra stomps in "B" as less used FX and behind the scenes param changes (high/low cut for example). For time based FX I only use a limited subset of Helix and for drive FX, I use a wide variety of both amps and pedals (internal to Helix). In this context, I think a traditional board controlled with a loop switcher still makes a lot of sense, although it always bothered me that the loop switchers took up so much board real estate. For me personally though, I missed the different styles of amps I could play with. For studio/creative exploration use, that's where I'd try to explore way more of the scope of a multi-FX. In fact I'm likely going to put together a board with HX Stomp + H90 and/or a big Meris pedal for that. The idea being to let the HX Stomp mostly be a drive section and base layer, with the H90 and Meris stuff being the features. Of course there's a danger of writing really cool material with this board and suddenly wanting to gig it!

I got an M5 a few months ago. It has 108 different pedals in it. If I need something on short notice I can get close if not bang on. There are 24 preset slots. There are 6 categories: Overdrives (includes Boosts/Compressors), Delays, Modulations, Filters, Reverbs. 24/6=4. but I don't need 4 Filters, so the first 6 presets are overdrives & comps, the next 5 are delays, then modulations, then a filter, then 5 reverbs. I keep practicing thru my presets so that I get comfortable with each one. And occasionally I go thru the whole list to see if I'm overlooking something I might need.

My current main rig is the Helix floor. I have a small board on the side with a tuner (always active) and 2 analog compressors ('m very finicky about compressors and that's an always on thing for me). For clean tones, the Wampler Ego 76 has replace the regular Ego comp for me. Not exactly transparent but much mopre so than the regular Ego. The second one is a Mini Ego comp I use only for certain lead tones. It has a volume boost and adds lots of sustain. It's natural "thumpiness" is much less apparent on higher gain tones (all my presets use 2 amps, one for clean, one for gain). Other than that, everything else is all Helix (mod, delays reverbs, EQs + specific effects for certain songs (Twin Harmony for exemple). On my "analog" board connected in 4 CM with my Revv Dynamis 7-40 2 channels tube head, I've use the HX FX for even longer than I've had the Helix floor. On there, I also have the Wampler comps + 2 analog drives (the Revv G2 and G4). Most of the time, I'll use the amp's gain channel as it's very flexible with 3 "Dynamics" levels varying gain and voicing (similar to Revv's Aggression switches on their flagship Generator amps. The Dynamis 7-40 is my holy grail amp that finally gives me the tones I had in my head for many years. Got it in October 2021. The HXFX is the main controller of that rig (the Dynamis has midi which controls several of its features including channel switching and more). I loved the HXFX from the get go and a lot of the same effects are used in it like in my Helix floor as it's used to play the same material (either our own originals in a neo-prog style or our Marillion 80s era tribute project). But I admit that now I'm kind of addicted to the cleanliness of the Helix floor and having everything stereo. With the Dynamis, time based effects are in the loop including mod but int he Helix, they all live after the cabs/IRs so it's a different thing. The HXFX is the best multieffects I ever used. In recent years, I also played with a Boss MS-3 which the HXFX replaced in early 2022. I'd used that MS-3 for a few years. Before that in my older rig (tied with my old Fender red knbs Twin), I used a Korg A3 and, before that early in the 90s, I used an Art mult-ieffect unit whose model name I cannot remember. Before that I had a board full of Boss pedals as many others did at the time. It failed way too often at the worst moment ;) That's the thing with multi-effects and modern rigs, they are far more reliable than what I started with in the 80s ;). So, ther than drives and comps, I'm in no rush to start having a board with all separate pedals again. I prefer the multi-effects route.

I’ve thought about swapping my Carbon Copy Deluxe and Boss Dd-5 for a timeline to benefit from presets but honestly I can get so much out of these two, I know them very well and tweak them on the fly, there both setup in a looper to receive tempo so can do rhythmical stuff. Other than that I settled on a Wampler terraform to consolidate my growing modulation needs and it’s been great, of the 10 or so Fx I use 8.

I guess there are 3 types:- 1. Full multi fx, no physical amp 2. Full individual pedal board into physical amp 3. Pedal board with assisted multi fx physical amp I’m generalising, yes I know, but you’re kinda talking about those in camp 3. Real estate AND power supply are considerations. Some of those mfx units draw a lot of power as well as some straight digital pedals. I’m in camp 2 but would consider something like an HX One to handle tuner and effects I wouldn’t use too often.

I am no1. I do have a really nice individual pedal board, but I generally only use it in the studio. Having the full on switching presets on stage with all fx going off the same tap tempo, and no moving parts like cables and psu and velcro, makes the modeller a no brainer. Has to be into an actual amp though.

I agree with @andrewdempsey5312. A multifx helps you discover your sound. Also, even once you settle on the same "pedalboard' the ability to have different settings on the same fx for different songs, and being able to recall that is invaluable. Your choice of pedal/amps/fx differ also by band/genre. I had a band where all of my presets were marshall based. If I was to introduce a different highgain amp like a mesa boogie, at the same loudness level, it would disappear in the mix, because the rest of the band would eat up all of my frequencies. A multifx can help with that too.

I’ve played with all the chorus patches in my HXFX… but I keep going back to my 30+ year old Boss CE-3. I don’t know why. The choruses in the HX sound great… and some of them have loads of options… but that single physical pedal sucks me back in as soon as I patch it. I don’t own any reverbs or delays that don’t live in a rack… so having a wide selection of those options at my feet are worth the price of the HX. But I do go back and forth on the question.

The Looper is available from Circular Labs, and is described as "Mobius is software for the real-time creation of audio loops. It was inspired by the venerable hardware loopers of the past, but moves beyond them in many powerful and exciting ways. You can think of Mobius as 8 synchronized stereo loopers that can be used in any combination with extensive MIDI and computer keyboard control. Loops may be saved to and loaded from files. I have two pedalboards at home and a range of stomp pedals I put on the them. One of them actually has my Zoom G3n paired with a Harley Benton GPA100. Whilst I have a lot of fun with the dedicated stomp pedals at home, playing out with the pedalboard is too much of a faff for me and the Zoom G3n plugged into the power amp in of an amp is less noisy, more controllable and convenient.

To me it's all really an exercise in blending/layering to get the sounds I'm looking for when I play in a church setting. I think there's no doubt that good effects pedals produce some awesome tones. But that's more for the studio, home recording, and perhaps solo work. But as soon as you are playing gigs then really the average audience can't tell the difference between a really good £200 pedal and a £20 one. And that is where multi-effects kick in. It's so much easier to have one big, integrated box on the floor, than a huge pedal board with £1000 worth of pedals. The Helix Stomp does the job every time - or a Boss GX100. I've done lugging a DLR around with pedals - about 50 lbs. I'm now on live gigs with a DV Mark Raw Dawg (18lb speaker and 4 lb amp) and a Helix Stomp XL ( 3lb ). Get paid ok and nobody asks for the valve+pedals rig.

You never know when you're going to go down a rabbit hole. For instance, I went on a cruise recently and saw a guy using a Looper pedal, so I got into using a Looper pedal, but I didn't have to buy one because there's one in my HX stomp and another one in my hxfx and another one in my kemper. For each of those I have a whole new breed of patches for toggling acoustic Sims with electric guitar sounds, toggling acoustic patches with distortions paired with IRS to make electric sounds. Also a multi-effects is super helpful with experimenting with sounds, you can a b stuff in ways that are very difficult with single-use and analog pedals.

The H90 is deceptively powerful because many of the effects are actually combinations of effects. So even though you have only two algorithms, depending on what you're using you may have as many as 6 or so effects at your disposal. I think this lends it more to being used for a "sound result" than to think about it in terms of what effects you can have running at once. More like, what is the sound result that can be achieved with the two slots you have. I think the disappointing thing about the H90 is that it really mostly fits in a workflow where you're augmenting something else with it... and it doesn't have USB audio so that something else can't as easily be your home DAW and plugins. It really belongs on a pedalboard because it doesn't have amp modeling, it doesn't have a headphone jack. There's really a lack of post/pre audio utilities like an eq or compressor that doesn't take up one of those two slots.

I play keys along with guitar live and the guitar synths rarely sound convincing, a cheap korg will do the same thing so much better and keys aren't hard to learn.

Cool sounds that I expect from keyboards.. but not a guitar.. To each his own..

Digital multi fx for guitar are essential- especially if you only play/produce music from home😊

I have been using a Line6 HD500X since 2012 and in terms of return-of-investment, it is great acquisition considering the price I paid for it. It has supported my income and stood the test of time, and can cover all genres in my repertoire.

Sounds like every Bluegrass player I've ever met! When I'm playing that stuff nobody's looking for anything but good guitars, good playing, and good singers. Sometimes there's a mic in front of the whole band!
