Thanks for the report. It's oh-so-very nice, but seems to be much more of a rack unit made into a desktop than something designed to live on the floor. The sprawling UI misses the immediacy that most instrumentalists prefer and need. I've had an H3000 d/se and Timefactor, and just ordered a used H9 Max for $330 shipped.

Brilliant video and incredibly timely. First, THANK YOU for the approach. I just spent a lot of time this weekend with Eventide's three H90 videos. They are long, comprehensive, and poorly designed in an instructional sense. I understood them, but I just got more disenchanted with the unit as the videos unfolded. (And yes, the terminology is quite obtuse and unnecessarily so.) Second, I found this was the perfect antidote. It helped to clarify and provide context for the information dump that those videos were. Third, based on this alone, I'm subscribing to your channel and I'm going to check out your entire H90 series. I wish you much success as you build your channel!

Let's just count money. There are few types of fx you need. 1 Drive 2 Modulations 3 Delays 4 Reverbs and 5 (Maybe you don't need it) Harmonic fx. H90 Has ALL of them and more. We can erase drive from th list we all know why. So we have four types. Three of them we all need. There's a few brands who make multifx pedals with one type of fx. For example, Strymon. If you go this way you have to buy Mobius, Timeline and Bigsky. Each of them about $600. $1800 total (I don't count shipping and I take prices couple years after release). But how many of them you need at once? Mostly 2. So H90 has two. And it costs $900. Twice cheaper than a bunch of Strymon. And that is not all. There are some algorithms that has two fx in one in fact. For example TimeSpace (Delay+Reverb), Just simple delay and simple reverb, that is everything we often; or some of harmonic algorithms have delay in itself. And you can still add something more, any modulation or harmonizer, whatever, to second preset of the program. And this is still not all. H90 can do muuuuuch more FX than a Strymon "holy trinity", Strymon don't have none of harmonic fx and even if they does, Eventide do it BEST. They are still producing new algorithms that are free to update your H90. PolySynth is a game changer in some terms. Yes you can buy Merit Enzo, but then add +500$ to the first 1800$ and you have four pedals instead of one. And yes, there are something like TC Plethora. This is good if simple drive/mod/delay/reverb is enough for you. No need to say that all brands mentioned here are making HI-END STUNNING sound. So there are two ways. 1. Cheap. You buy Plethora or some cheap processor for all FX and 2. Relatively expensive - One H90 if you want super flexibility, fancy, modern, experimental sounds for AAAANY case, if you want to sound unusual an fantastic some times, not only excellent like everybody. The third way of buying dedicated pedals for each type of fx have gone IMHO. It still works but time goes and some really interesting products are appearing, why not to use them?

Yes 🙌 NIKO‼️‼️‼️🙏🙏🙏✅✅✅👌👌👌 thank you for clarifying this in detail because i saw the title of this YT clip and was bit worried - but then again it’s a matter of choice and preference… I’m a KeyBoardist, Vocalist and producer with my own home studio in a serious upgrade mode so been just buying new gear and i researched this device extensively watched tons of videos and decided on the EVENTIDE … I’m old school music guy in my 60’s and would most likely just use the presets and i wanted something i can just sort of patch into my PRESONUS STUDIOLIVE SX2 - 32 channel mixer and my patchbays and this thing seems to fit in nicely … no regrets but when I see titles like this video here i get a Bit nervous thinking i made a mistake until i read your comments … THANK YOU 🙏 The Real Sam Swing from the 1980’s / 1990’s NYC MUSIC SCENE LOL

I’m a bassist and have been a musician 40 years, so have experienced the progression of technology and how it affects the industry and popular culture. The upside of these changes is that now we have an almost unlimited amount of choices which were simply not available 40-50 years ago. The simple question to resolve is: what are you trying to achieve artistically? When you have that answer it’s easier to research and determine the gear you need. If your budget, space and time is limited, a unit like the H90 makes sense. If the opposite is true, a collection of individual pedals that are each supremely gifted in a single function may make more sense. To each his/her own …

The problem with all of these shock and awe effects devices is that while they are full of stunning sonic possibilities, most of them aren't terribly useful or they will quickly begin sounding gimmicky. The most sophisticated delay I ever bought is like this - and so I spent countless late nights tweaking sounds and hitting buttons, with the impact of diminishing time better spent writing songs or playing. Of course, all of this comes to one much more painfully when you consider how much a a high-end unit costs. The older I get, the less patience I have in learning some manufacturers piece of gear that is confusing and massively non-intuitive. The reality is, one could do almost anything with 4 to 5 versatile pedals encompassing Reverb / delay / ambient, fuzz / overdrive/ boost, compression, chorus / vibrato. The rest is mostly novelty. I will say I'm excited about the Electroharmonix pedals that emulate other instruments - pure alchemy! Perhaps, in another 10 years, the multi-effects and amp modelers will become must better sounding and logical to manipulate.

A UI needs some thoughtful 'feng shui' to be pleasurable to use. Easier said than done and many gear designers fall well short, and so the learning curve s t r e t c h e s. I compounded this lesson with "too many new-to-me synths at once" around a dozen years ago. Within the span of a year I'd gotten an Alesis A6, then a JD990 and also started up a Eurorack system....then all of a sudden a Jupiter-8 "falls into my lap" for a nice deal. The JD is enough like my long-gone JV2080 to be navigable, if still a cumbersome slog. The A6 however, is the sort of idiosyncratic beast that one must use at least every other week or risk forgetting some things. If I was away from it for long, I'd have to re-learn where certain functions reside - such as the mod wheel assignments needing several specific clicks to get to, and needing to continually refine my own init patch and overwrite the factory progs.

Also the more complex a piece of gear is, the more _a well-written manual_ becomes indispensable for the users who need it to be programmable beyond a preset surf&tweek.

The H90 is fantastic. It’s actually really simple to use. 😂 One thing I noticed is to make a lot of the presets sound half decent is to sort the dry wet balance.

Totally agree. Temptation is to have far too much wet balance. The art of subtlety has been lost…

This is a conundrum of making the unit as a pedal and/or for desktop/console use, and not having a global switch for both setups. Pedalers use it in series, so their preferred wet/dry mix is different vs. putting the H90 in an aux send wherein 100% wet is often most useful.

ive had the exact same experience. took me 6 months to find the patience to sit down. im still not sure about the pedal. yeah it has amazing capabilities but yeah... 70% i propably never use. also due to the fact that i only use it at home. as a perfomer those capabilities surely are amazing. but the main negative is tight to that: its just so overwhelming complexe, even if that comes a lot of the times from the fact that you can do all that stuff in different methods. but just the menu-diving aspect combined with button combos etc is just so off-putting for me. completely kills workflow, absolutely not intuitive. i hate programming music, i want to loose myselfn with eyes closed ;) it sounds great, yeah but... im not sure yet if i keep it.

GREAT video! I don't even have an H90 but its nice to see how it varies to the H9. The parameter editing seems like a missed chance, on the H9 going into advanced mode lets you quickly cycle all the parameters in an algorithm - all. I don't know why they didn't let you cycle parameters in sets of 3 on the H90 for each algorithm. Maybe its an additional mode? Does the hotswitch function turn off the bank mode? Would have been cool if both could work together, bank mode and hold a switch to cycle through snapshots. Bugs me when multieffects don't allow this as it makes for a massively powerful format (i.e. Alexander Pedals Neo Series). I think the whole market needs to catch up to Alexander. In an example, on the Sky 5000 you have 4 presets, tap, ramp/alt modes and on/off (at least) across 2 switches. That's 4 presets each with tap and alternate modes and only 2 switches, it drives me nuts when the bigger companies don't follow this kind of logic in switch management (Boss, Eventide, etc.). The same thing on a Boss 500 pedal would need 4 banks of 3 switches where each bank is 2 modes with tap and requiring pressing 2 switches to go up and down. Imagine if you could hold a preset switch to enter an alternate mode or access a secondary function - it would double its power. Its all just software limits, drives me nuts!

I'm a bass player, I own the boss gt6b. I bought it twenty years ago. I felt the same way about it for years, how I wish there were KZbin videos of people going through how to write patches. I was so frustrated. So much so that I will probably never buy a multi like that again. I did eventually get comfortable with it but I do know exactly what you mean! (I'm a dinosaur-get off my lawn!)

No. I sold it actually. I had fun playing with it but I think I found that I prefer pedals (or synths) that are just really good at one thing rather than able to do 100 different patches.

@@Kompa55_Music i agree im somewhat similar, i have the eventide space which i love but often get lost in, in a good way, so not 100% sure i need or gel with the h90. Hearts set on the meris lvx really quite deep but apparently very intuitive . Primarily a delay but with a few tricks up its sleeves. Thanks for the chat its helped me clarify my decision 👍🏼

H90 has some great presets but the functionality is the worst I've ever experienced on an FX pedal. Countless hours wasted , instead of going through. the useless button presses and menu diving on the pedal I always end up using the H90 control on my Mac to change the settings. Only buy it if you've got time and money to waste..🙁

I agree that the software makes it much easier to use. I found that using the software made using the pedal a lot easier as a standalone unit as you understand what is in all the menus.

That’s why it is important to do your research before you buy something. What do I want it for? Ease of use? Quality of the effects? Does a Ferrari owner regret buying his car because he cannot ride around 350 kms per hour? It ultimately depends on yourself. So if it is a waste of money, you shouldn’t have bought it. I have had mine for a month now. Sounds amazing processing synths and voice also. Haven’t used it, but because I do not have time. Do I regret it? No, it is my decision.

Yeah I don’t actually think it is a waste of money (which is the whole point of the video!). You just need to take the time to get to know it. You should watch my whole series on the H90. Will really help you get to know it quickly. Especially if you’re pressed for time.

The H90 is absolutely not too complicated. If you can navigate a computer interface, you’re more than equipped to master the h90. I adore mine and the sounds I get from it are so inspiring.
