The muscle ups strangely feel awesome when you do them. There's no other exercises that feel as rewarding as them, not sure why. As soon as your form breaks down enough that your chest touches the bar, start doing dips, then finish with pull ups (or another muscle up). At age 21 I did 43, strict, no kips, double muscle ups in University of Virginia gym with a law student keeping count. I had started working on them at age 16 when I saw a guy do one behind the high school gym and was hugely impressed, made a horizontal bar behind my parent's house and worked very hard at it, getting that first one. I was a wrestler (not very good - average); so, was an athlete and weight lifter. The trick was an "over grip" on the bar and having very thin, light legs, lower body. My strength was all in my upper body. I am now 81 and can not do a regular pull up.

In my opinion it is simply a skill. The skills of callisthenics evolve and influence each other in such a way that some skills are king. We call them the basics. That however does not make them fundamental. What is fundamental are the principles and precepts. This skill falls under that fundament. I see it, not as a technique or a workout in its entirety, and don't believe it should not be viewed as such. When you reach a plateau, in any area, you must begin to switch gears and learn new things. Could be anything, but after you've learned and practiced enough new things, you will find in them the "answer" to your plateau. The muscle up is one such thing. It's simply something you do. Not a point of mastery. Not a manifestation. You learn it for it's heuristic benefit. It is a means in and of itself-by its sake-for its sake. Nothing more; nothing less. The fast and loose rule is to generalize, not specialize. Although "generalize" isn't even the proper word in this connotation. Appropriatize, actualize, and naturalize are more effective depictions of the Martial material. The very essences of what we're trying to achieve on the path to Martial mastery. That is the art of Martial Arts. The art of all arts no less.

I am trying to achieve the muscle up because I do parkour. The benefits for explosive strength carry over very well to climb ups or dynos on a wall. It´s basically the same movement, but the muscle up is a lot harder, making the wall climb ups much easier in comparison. When I am satisfied with my explosive power, I plan to transition into the ring muscle up to get a more complete workout. For now however, I still need way more pulling power to make my climbing look smoother, so bar muscle up it is.
@caliscience4 жыл бұрын
I've used to do parkour, too. That was one of the reasons that made me start calisthenics. I also think that muscle ups can carry over to climb ups, but don't forget about the explosive leg part of the climb ups. In parkour it's almost like a kip muscle up: you need to use all of your body in order to do it smoothly.
@jirkazalabak15144 жыл бұрын
@@caliscience If you look at the really advanced parkour people, like Shane Griffin, they sometimes almost ignore the knee drive part. They pull so explosively that even with half-assed technique, they still land on straight arms. And I think I have enough explosive leg strength for a climb up. My standing pre is about 9 feet at the moment. Not amazing, but as I said, enough for the climb up. Also, I train my legs as well. On my workout days, I usually try the muscle up with a band a few times, then go for explosive pull ups, straight bar dips, and finish off with pistol squats. I also add some core excercises between my sets of pull ups and dips, because none of these is particularly demanding on the core, so I feel like I can afford it with the long pauses (3-4 min) between sets. I find that this is the most time-efficient way to do it. I could do the core separately, but with hard excercises, you really don´t want to do them back to back.
@caliscience4 жыл бұрын
@@jirkazalabak1514 Well, then I think I should train climb ups more, because I suck at it. And still, I can do like 7 consecutive strict ring and bar MUs, but can't climb up very fast like some parkour dudes who doesn't even do advanced/intermediate calisthenics. Maybe I'm lacking technique because I haven't practiced it for years.
@jirkazalabak15144 жыл бұрын
@@caliscience That´s very likely. The mechanics are a little bit different. My biggest mistake was letting my bottom foot slip off the wall, which was stealing a lot of my power. Once I corrected that, my climb ups got much better. Also, it depends a lot on how grippy the surfaces are. If both your feet and fingers are slipping off, it´s almost impossible to do a clean climb up.

Does the muscle up have value as a skill for getting up onto things?
@lionelbuffman57904 жыл бұрын
I believe that the muscle up has some carry over benefit as regards climbing onto surfaces (especially the grip transition phase) but a lot of the time in real life, surfaces you'll be climbing are walls or flat surfaces; not suspended bars or rings. There is also a biomechanical difference as regards what you need to do with your legs and posture when climbing a flat wall surface (as if you pull yourself too far from the wall as in a muscle up, you will fall); but I think the explosive pull strength and grip transition will still be relevant in these situations
