I love to geek out about the physics of sound. This channel focuses on the growing opportunity for live sound engineers to improve their confidence and consistency through the understanding of the principles of sound system design and optimization. My goal is to make this channel upfront and honest about my success and failure, so you can learn from both.
I am always open to suggestions and feedback so please comment on this video or contact me through my site.

10:30 That side note about projection hits close to home. I work in one venue that hosts university graduations. They've been doing it the same way for years and are very resistant to change, including, in particular, the placement of projection screens for IMAG and displaying graduate names, which are not porous, right in front of the arrays, reflecting the sound straight back into the lecterns. The level of spectral violence required to get enough gain before feedback to make anything audible is truly heinous.

SPECTRAL VIOLENCE!!!! yeah, that sounds frustrating. Do you think they'll change it?

@@nathanlively I don't think they'll change the screen positions. But apparently the video production company (after much pushing from our technical manager) are getting new screens that are more acoustically transparent. I'll believe it when I see/hear it. One thing I didn't mention is that not only do they hang screens in front of our arrays, they insist we remove the front fills and will not budge on that.

Hey Melvin, this is a spreadsheet that is normally only available to students of Pro Audio Workshop: Seeing Sound, but if you send me an email, I'll try to get you a copy. nathan@sounddesignlive.com

Hey Nathan you talk about change the gain at the lower two boxes , we’ll gain tampering is not recommended in a line array because it may change the low beam angel , because the principal of the line array , we’ll low pass is what you can do I think ...

Thanks Artes! I've been gain shading for years and the Line Array Police have yet to arrest me. ;) I do know of the guidelines that you are referring to, though, so I'm not driving blindly. I also try to avoid individually EQing the zones differently because of the resulting changes in phase and therefore summation between zones, but I'm not afraid to play with anything. Whatever get's the job done.

Question from Ian to Nathan: "How do I make five speakers per side work in my situation [because that is what I can afford]?" Answer from Nathan to Ian: "Go spend another $20,000.00 [of money you don't have] and get ten more speakers."

Hi Carl! Not necessarily. While I can't bend the laws of physics for you, I still think it's better to understand what's happening with your system so you can know what to expect and communicate about it with every else involved. :)
