The z900rs has a restrictive airbox. Remove the divider inside it and flash the ECU. It will also run very lean at idle and low rpms, thats a good part of why it feels jerky at low speeds when you go on and off the throttle.

Let me break it down for you ...... The hornet makes power like a sport bike - smooth down low with an increasing top end rush to redline. Kawasaki specifically engineered the RS for low and mid range torque. Add in the MUCH MORE RESTRICTIVE emissions and the engine losses that top end rush and feels flat by comparison. Kawasaki also gave the bike a low first gear and a very tall 6th - when doing roll-on tests it is only fair to use 5th. Send the ECU to Moore Mafia. Keep the stock exhaust if you like quiet bikes (like I do), or make it as loud as you want. Michelin Road 6 tires will unlock the chassis potential. The heart wants what the heart wants, but with these mods I think you will agree its a pretty damn good package. P.S. - plastic parts on modern bikes are here to stay. Plastic is cheaper than aluminum, but it is also lighter and more than strong enough to do the job the engineers want it to do. Keep up the good work.

@@UlvarinLind The flash costs less that $400 and the airbox mods you do yourself. Almost any Kawi will require at least that. Its a peculiarity of the latest models I find... If you want a KN filter, another like 70 bucks? Hell even if you splurged and got an Akro full exhaust that's $1,400. The result is a 121hp dyno, flawless throttle, fantastic power delivery, and erections that last longer than 4 hrs.

Any idea what they meant when they said the Z900RS has a lot more plastic? The CB900F has a plastic cowl, side covers, fender, and mud guards, and instrument cluster. The Z900RS appears to have a plastic cowl, side covers, fender, and mud guards, and instrument cluster. Where is it hiding its extra plastic? Also, in what other ways does the CB900F have superior build quality? (Not rhetorical questions - I'm a Hornet fanboy and haven't seen a Z900RS in the flesh.)

"fun" fact: here in Brazil, the Hornet was used for many years as a getaway bike for thieves, they used those to catch up with more powerful bikes in a city environment, and also to rob people on the streets of São Paulo. These days, thieves use the BMW 800 or a Triumph speed bike (can't remember the model). Great bike that Hornet, nevertheless!

The ONLY thing "derived" from a super bike on the 919, Original FZ1 and FZ6 are the engines, the chassis and every thing else are thier own thing. Always have been. and the single back bone frame of the 919 was derided as old school not ridged back in its day. Back in the day I looked at all of these I bought a Kawasaki ZRX 1200R, with a ZX10(original) "derived" engine.

I don't think the z900rs is specifically trying to be a successor to the Hornet 900, but Spite's question makes sense for someone like me who loves the Hornet but may eventually like to upgrade to something newer to benefit from modern tech like ABS and inverted forks. Ultimately, the z900rs is the closest thing to the Hornet on the current market (though the cb1000r is probably a more accurate modernization of the original *idea* of the Hornet).

I reeeeeallly want to see them ride a CB1100 and compare it to a rebel 1100 now. It's the last air cooled 4-cylinder in the USDM if memory serves correct. It makes poor horsepower, but for cruising, it has Presence with a capital P. The 4 chromed exhaust pipes, my DLX model has the twin exhaust pipes, and the candy apple red paint make it a great standard bike for cruising. It weighs over 500lbs, but man does it roll smooth. WOuld be cool to throw the Z900RS, the CB1100, a triumph bonneville, and maybe the XSR900 and see what the differences are.

My impression before I started modifying it was that it was a happy puppy dog of a bike that would just give you as much power as you asked for, then you look down and you're doing 85 mph. After swapping in a set of katana 1100 cams, Yoshimura mid pipe and can rejetting and tuning the carbs and K&N dual carb oval filters I was left with an absolute stump puller of a motor. In 1st gear you couldn't give more than half throttle past 7k without the thing standing straight up.

I had a Honda 919 and loved it. Keep in mind this wasn't a well cared for bike. The guy I bought it from had dumped it hard it had dents and scratches and rattling bits. I did my best to put it back to good but it was always a little flawed. However, given all that, it was just a fantastic bike. I have no idea what this means, but like they've said, "it has soul". I've owned similar bikes I've had a couple Suzuki 1200 Bandits, a Kawasaki Z1000 and a Yamaha FZ. All of them great bikes, but just never felt like I connected with them. The Hornet was just as happy rolling along a country backroad at 55 mph as it was bombing around some a twisty stretch of asphalt. The only other bike that feels like this to me is the SV650. I would love to find a low mileage, well cared for Hornet.

There's something about the old bikes that they just can't duplicate today (I'm sure emissions regulations have a lot to do with that). The old ones looked a lot better too. Although I haven't owned it in a lot of years I'd take my '83 CB1100F or my old friend Ed's CBX 1050 over any brand new bike out there.

When you said old i thought u were gonna do a cb900. Hornet aint old. Ive never ridden a honda where my first thought was 'wow it has character' Boring? Anodyne? Some metal thrown together? Yes. Never been on a fireblade mind. My Zed900 is my first Kawasaki. I love it.

Hey, I just found your channel with this video! I shall hit the like and sub button! I don't yet know if you take suggestions or review other bikes however I will recommend one for you to ride. To clarify I have been ridding since 2012 and have owned over 6 bikes. of them all one stood out enough to mention here. Find yourself a 1980-1982 Honda cb900 Custom. I have the '80. For starters it's got a transfer case effectively making it a 10 speed with a high low selector. Some will say it's a 6 speed because no one would really cycle through all H - L 1-5 gears, and I won't disagree. It shares engine parts with a F class sport bike engine, yet its kind of a cross between a cruiser and sport bike. Anyhow nice demonstration /comparison.

Hornet 919 are supposed to be approx 110 hp at the engine which is no big deal really but they are for some reason bloody fast. I think the factory quarter mile is pretty much 11 seconds flat and 0-60 (100 kph here in Oz) in just above 3 seconds. That's faster than it really should be, is it the fact that the engine is pretty much a super sport engine with a different cam and tune?

You can't shut me up about my Z900 RS!! Seriously, I had a different experience with my stock 2022. Could be that I don't ride and review for a living, but I feel like you're a little harsh with the performance. I will admit that it's not a sport bike or the most muscular naked, but I was pleasantly surprised out of the box, and I sold a V max 6 years ago. I will say that Kawi absolutely strangles their bikes with emissions (look at that tumor of a cat under it). They leave it to us to do the tune, which really transforms it. And by the way, looks wise it's not even close. The RSs are distinctive, fantastic looking bikes. Especially the Cafe and the RS SE.

The Hornet and Z900 aren't quite comparable. The Kwak is a retro designed to look like the original Z900 including the paint colours but with up-to-date equipment wheras the Hornet was designed to be in the streetfighter ilk of a race bike with no fairing and wide bars. Unfortunately the Hornet was up against the Speed Triple 955i which was more powerful, faster and sold by the bucket load. In the last two years of UK Hornet imports only 256 were sold. The Hornet makes 100 bhp and 63 ft-lb at the wheel but is very snatchy when off-on the throttle in slow traffic as it's an engine designed for carbs with fuel injection slapped on. This can be solved with a Power Commander which will give 104 bhp and 66 ft-lb but with a far smoother pick up power and the flat spot is eliminated. On the practical side it was possible to get a centrestand for the Hornet and luggage was also available after-market, you can't get a centre stand for most modern bikes including the Kwak so all rear end maintenance is made far more difficult. It was also made in the last few years of motorcycles being made well rather than to a price as they are now. It also lacks the million-and-one electronic frippery items that will fail and be expensive to replace. If you are a half-decent rider the traction control, cornering traction control, multi-mode power and cruise control can be found in a single control-the throttle. The Hornet is a larger, heavier and more powerful CB500 with a similar ease of riding at any speed. Tank range is 150-180 miles before the light comes on and it is comfortable enough to do 1000+ miles in a day. Servicing is a doddle [there isn't a Haynes, if you are lucky you may find a Honda manual] but I change the oil at 4000 rather than 8000 miles as it looks a bit tired then. When the Bridgestone BT56 tyres were discontinued the replacement advised was the BT016, these are awful in the cold and wet and the rear will spin up too easily, instead go for the BT023s. The front wheel bearings on mine failed at 16 000 miles [just out of warranty] but the replacements are still going strong. The battery is a pig to remove and replace as the wires are just too short and the rear disc was replaced at 90 000 miles-I put this down to too many slow riding demonstrations and tuition sessions-lock to lock manoevering is simple on the Hornet. The fronts will need replacing soon as well. The lower rear shock bearings failed at 95 000 miles and were replaced-with a centre stand this job is far easier than without. Compared to the Speed Triple the Hornet is tamer and less grin-inducing. It is however less likely to tempt you into the sort of riding that will get you banned or hospitalised. The engine will sound a bit rattly when it gets above 40 000 miles or so but this seems to be normal, mine clocked up 98 000 miles today [15th Aug 2022] and I have owned it from new. If you like in the UK do no, under any circumstances buy one of these second-hand. They are rare and as I'm looking for one I don't want any competition! In all seriousness these are great bikes, just with the usual Honda 'get on and do it without all the fuss' attitude.

I’ve never bought in to the belief that inline 4s lack “character”. They have their own thrilling edge. I’m completely on board with the CB900 Hornet love. One of the most enjoyable bikes I’ve owned. Did the US get the CBF1000? I had one after the Hornet. Not as appealing to the eye but a fantastically comfortable & versatile sports tourer.

I'm biased and totally agree with this review. That's why I got two (2) absolutely identical CB900F-5s. However, they do have slightly different personalities. The Honda has a far superior build quality and I think many aftermarket parts are still available (except the stainless "Y" link pipe). PCV now, as opposed to the older PCIII. PS. I'm cringing at the end as I watch a huge man leaning on that bike as it sways on that side stand. Not what that stand was designed for.

I love my 900 hornet(919 is unknown here in EU), i have(in germany) the italian/southern-europe version without KAT (catalytic-xyz?!?) and 110hp instead of 109 HP.Its a wonderfull bike, the power is also today remarkeble esp. with shortened gearbox, but really the suspension(esp. front) is crap and ABS is missing today... I drove the cb1000r(125HP), i dont noticed much more power(more less) but the suspension today is much more better...

Hmm, you guys did 4 different videos of the Z900RS and complained about the tires, the brakes and the tuning throughout. Why didn't you fix that after the very first video, before you started comparing it to other bikes? It might be interesting to see one more video where you finally tune the bike and maybe make a couple of performance mods along with a test ride.
