i would say not really i prefer older movies because they have more nuance and attention to detail something like rashomon or 12 angry men that look at the human spirit not all the answers are spelled out or the american new wave in the 70's that had character study's that weren't boring like the Night Stalker

I'll just give a small example. The most recognizable sci-fi movie of the last 10 years is said by many to be Inception, a great movie but easily forgettable the following year. And then in the decade of the 70's alone you have Star Wars, which has become an immortal movie saga that to this day has gathered millions of dollars leading to yet another trilogy just to cash in. The difference about old movies and new is that the old ones have loads of memorable classics with largely original and enjoyable stories, while the new ones, even though there are still various fantastic movies, they are still very forgettable and didn't leave much of a mark (unless you think the Dark Knight left a mark...) The only blow that old movies get is the fact that younger generations (of which I'm part, I'm 22) have been trained in the consumerism mentality of it it's new, it's good. But I understand that maybe in the past people thought the same way. My opinion is that the way you look at movies is what will establish your opinion. If you think of movies as an art form it's likely you will appreciate the efforts made to have believable storylines in movies. If you view movies as a form of "entertainment" only, something you watch to occupy time and because it's the hip new thing, then you won't have nearly enough patience to watch an older movie, because "the graphics aren't good" And I feel pity for people who can't appreciate a movie for it's quality of storytelling and rather are more interested in the realism of it and the date it was made...

Old movies are better than new movies, no doubt. In old movies they use to put effort, beautiful story, beautiful culture, a lesson to learn from that movies. Majority new movies are useless.

I will always love citizen Kane and I think it truly is a masterpiece but the consistent unwavering tone throughout whiplash coupled with the exciting and unrelenting pace of the editing really make it stand out for me as one of my all time favourites. Citizen Kane is a cinematic treasure but I find whiplash more suitable for repeat viewings and I prefer it as a film although I do believe a lot more can be learned about film making from CK. Great video man thanks!
@numovie8 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much man! I agree, there's a lot to be learned from Kane as it's among the most affluential pieces of cinema in history combining techniques that had never been put together in one movie to establish a new style of motion picture... At the time... But with whiplash it seems like Damien Chazelle took a very basic concept and applied every technique necessary when making that film... What makes it even better is that whiplash was shot in just three weeks!
@isaywhateveriwantandyougot74213 жыл бұрын
Films have changed through the course of time, we still use the same techniques but new ones developed and storytelling became more advanced and complex. I think any movie holds up as well as any other as long as you remind yourself of when they came out (which shouldn't be too difficult). The best movies out there however are the ones where that isn't important, and I think that is why people say older movies are better, they need the right amount of time for us to see through the qualities that are timeless.
@LuisAngel-mu4zv3 жыл бұрын
I dont think movies have been more complex now, i just think they spell it out more to the audience and thats why we think its deeper, older movies were more subtle on their themes

I like your videos and are looking forward to more, but I'm wondering if you can give me a rundown of what you like the most about "Whiplash"? I love it and definitely think it's one of the best films I've seen in recent years, and Damien Chazelle is now one of my favorite writer/directors because of it. I know it sounds stupid to say he's one of my favorites based off of one film but after watching multiple interviews with him talking about his approach and the film itself, it's clear that he's concise and intelligent, and has the potential to create a lot more thematic and original stories. That's just my opinion though, but I'm wondering yours? Thanks and I'm looking forward to the next video. :)

Not sure how to phrase this, but I'll try: while I feel that modern special effects make for huge visual improvements which enhance the experience of a good story they can also turn a movie into what feels like a flashy and colorful assault on the senses that tells very little and while exciting in short burst becomes really tiresome after a few minutes. Movies such a LOTR would be the former and most recent super hero movies the latter. To me, at least.

Your case studies are all over the place. When tackling this subject you really have to be specific, What qualifies Whiplash to be put up against one of the most recognized films of all time. If you want to do this fairly you would look at two of the most renowned films from both the 'New School' and 'The Old School'. I would make suggestions here but you didn't really give us a classification for counts as New Film and what counts as a Old Film. I mean you compare Seventh Samurai and A New Hope? Which one of these films count as the new film?
@JamesHayes18 жыл бұрын
Like I said it was just opinion of mine that both of those films could be compared with each-other in terms of filmmaking and storytelling. I think Whiplash received huge amounts critical acclaim and when looking into the director Damien Chazelle I noticed that he has a lot of similarities in terms of his career to Orsen Welles which is why I thought they may be a good comparison with one-another. As for the Star Wars and Seven Samurai comment I wasn't comparing one with the other I was commenting on the way that George Lucas took ideas from that film and out it in star wars... Like I said as a homage...

Older films look better to me. The 80s to 90s era was the golden age for film IMO. Original content for the most part, stunts looked more Real less CGI Computer graphics...actors were more "IN" to it .. Now they all seem way too fake. Too ... Flashy and in your face. Computer CGI graphics left and right.. its dumb as shit.. Old films just had such a REAL feel to them... now its like I KNOW im watching a movie...

Your comment led me to feel...strange. A feeling like this "system," this accepted way we've been doing things, at least for the last 20 years or more, is going to suffer a major falling out, (or at least maybe it needs to). We've been trudging down this same road for a long time, thinking we are making progress with the bigger and better and more expensive and flashier, but I think more and more people are getting exhausted. It's going to crumble, and it's going to collapse. How long can people keep being drawn with increasingly talent-less, soul-less, attempts at art? Celebrity culture, big budget-shit movies and video games, the same damn pop song again and again AND AGAIN. It's propped up by...SOMETHING, but what happens when it's not anymore? Perhaps it will continue this way, but perhaps it will undergo a change. And from that death will come fresh, new life. Real, and beautiful. But death and birth are both often painful.
@MrDrawingboard15 жыл бұрын
Okay, I don't mean to judge your opinion but I think its the other way around. The 80's and 90's were incredibly fake and I think people forget when the 80s and 90s were happening, the CGI and gimmicks were getting old fast. Sequels were exploited like mad and any disaster/action movie was 100% dependent on CGI. Rarely focus on character, story, or anything, they were completely dependent on its new technology. Not only were old movies dumb but they were obvious and more cynical cash grabs

Right so I'm going to rant a little. Your videos are becoming increasingly problematic.. you 'stats', 'statistics' and 'facts' are all over the place. I think you need to realize the genre of KZbin videos you're making, you are essentially a Educational Film channel and you owe it to yourself and your viewers to far more prepared. After watching your video I can tell you right now that Jaws is very famously a PG rated Horror film, Colour became the norm in filming in the 1960's and you speak about A New Hope and show an image of The Phantom Menance?. Now this may seem like I am being inessential to pull you up on this but you have a responsibility to much better, after all it's likely that students, fans and possibly teachers will looks at this videos for further information. Imagine if a student was to use your incorrect information in an academic piece! I have another problem with your videos. Although I feel like you are well spoken you never really make any points, I never feel like I leave your videos learning anything. The title of this video is essentially New Movies vs. Old Movies: Which is Better? Yet you never answer that question. You say at the end of the video that modern films have greater aesthetics are are more appealing to the eye? So does that mean that modern films are better? Well surely that can't be the case because you suggest at the start of the video that films today are just homages of films prior... And as someone who claims to be a film representative you would know that it would be unfair to judge a Golden Age film on technological limitations. These informative film related videos are extremely popular at the moment, if you want to grow I suggest you work harder on creating stronger content. You videos are good to look at, nothing new or incredibly exciting but good nonetheless. It may seem like I am being hard on you but when you produce this the videos its the risk you take, criticism is an important tool.

Thank you for the time you have taken to give me feedback on this video, I am trying to fit a lot of information into a short video and so that might be why some of the information that I give is a little bit messed up when editing it together. I am trying hard to make these videos the best I can be although I am still learning myself I make sure to check facts before I include them in these videos. I would like to say though I don't feel as though I am a representative of film, I am simply a film enthusiast who is trying to learn film and as I go make videos on the topics I am learning about.
