Newer used outboards are the way to go. Last year I bought a pair of well cared for 2012 Yamaha HPDI 200's with 600 hours on them for 10k with like new props, rigging and gauges. The HPDI 200 has been one of Yamaha's most reliable engines. A pair of new 200's would be 40-50k, a huge difference.
@TheBoatersPodcast11 ай бұрын
For sure! Not to mention the F200's are an inline 4 and those HPDI's are a V-6, so there's more power you are getting out of those HPDI's compared to the inline 4's :) I love a 200 HPDI! Nice Snag on the engines!

Love the videos for good info and keeping up with the industry. What are your thoughts on electric outboards like the Vision marine and Elco?
@TheBoatersPodcast11 ай бұрын
Thank you! Vision's one of the first to actually get the larger HP outboards out and running and for a few years now with that 180. But Elco I don't know that much about. There are just so many different brands making smaller electric outboards now, even though it looks like they go up to a 50HP. That gets pretty tricky though the way they do the conversion rates on HP compared to Electric ratings :) lol but we'll talk about it!

i had a pair of yamaha f150s 2006 that ran great for me for about 2000 hours before they both basically had power head leaks and i didnt want to deal with fixing the seals. (somebody did and still runs them) I repowered during 2022 and paid about 40 grand for a pair of brand new fly by wire 200 suzukis and it was a total game changer all around.

What is your opinion of aftermarket tuning ECU flashes like Nizpro Yamaha? I have a F115 and would like a little better performance but do not want to sacrifice reliability.
@TheBoatersPodcast Жыл бұрын
Well, tuning kind of does sacrifice a little bit on reliability, and idk a ton about the Nizpro stuff for the littler engines like a 115, but that's a super reliable engine as it stands. Can you get any performance out of a prop change maybe? Also, what does the Nizpro do for the 115? Boost it up to like a 140 or somewhere around there. From what I have seen, most of the Nizpro stuff like that for the smaller stuff, doesn't really sacrifice anything on the reliable side of things, seeing that engine is just so reliable as a platform to begin with, and you aren't supercharging it and changing a ton of stuff :)

Part of the problem is marketing... we are made to feel like these boats, even modest size boats... HAVE to be going 50 mph at wot. just a few decades ago NOBODY would have even thought of a 600 horse power outboard. 25 foot boats were being pushed with 200 horse power outboards and nobody had 2 engines on a boat. A 20 foot boat with a 150 horse power is a lot of boat. We are wanting too much these days.
@TheBoatersPodcast11 ай бұрын
That's true, I'm still fine with doing 40 lol though I will admit you get spoiled when you consistently go 60 MPH or so on the water lol
@dannysdailys11 ай бұрын
I have a friend who has a 36 ft. MTI Cat. It cost 2 million dollars and that darned thing with just two 450R's on it can go 130 mph on the water. Yes, he has the whole thing blue printed but still. That is insane. I had a 25 foot sport boat with a 350 small block in it and it would hit 44 mph. Much too much for a 25 foot boat unless the water was like glass with no wind. It was too heavy to fly at 4,000 lbs, but it flew anyway and that made it very dangerous. In my boat, the boat doesn't give; you do. The only rattle is you bouncing around. LOL @@TheBoatersPodcast

I know marine engines have additional components that vehicle engines do not, but a crate 6.4L Hemi producing 485HP is only $15K give or take. An outboard with the same HP ratings is 3X minimum. It is ridiculous to be honest!

I'd check the transom first as well as make sure the fuel tank is good. But if you've got the transom that is solid, I'd be looking at hopefully a 250 or 300. But a 225 might get the job done, I would not put a 200 on there unless it was a Merc V-6 though. Idk how heavy the boat is exactly but with that Cuddy Cabin, an inline 4 cylinder 200 would be hard on the engine and you would be struggling with the boat loaded, depending on how you use the boat.

I have 4 X 600 hp Mercury engines and I am amazed there is no Garmin Autopilot integration. How is this not common knowledge?
@TheBoatersPodcast11 ай бұрын
Yeah, the 600s are their own animal, seeing the steering pumps are built onto the engine and it's using a pod drive and a driveshaft. It's a pretty proprietary engine platform for Mercury :/ plus Garmin has a deal with Yamaha and Mercury uses Simrad, so there is that lol but the communications between Mercury and other electronic companies. This is a pretty good topic!

How could boat manufacturers consider combining Garmin with Mercury 600's without providing this information to the buyer? This really is a liability for the boat manufacturers.

Dad used to sell 90hp Nissan two strokes for $5500 installed in the late 90’s early 2000’s. I’ll keep my johnrude v4 and mercury L6. They sound better anyway. These new motors are over complicated, over priced, and made of so much plastic. The fuel savings only is significant at idle and lower mid range. I don’t have a need for anything over 200hp.

I'm not an engineer but I like to play one on the ininternet 😂. I can't stop thinking about a closed water cooling system for outboards. Im sure the industry could do it so there has to be reason why they didn't. If it's cost that's crazy to me. If it's a design thing I wonder what it is? Wouldn't a closed water cooling system save us from a lot of problems? Wouldn't it preserve the engine better? No salt water in the motor way less corrosion and better temperature control. I don't know maybe I'm crazy but to me if they want to revolutionize the outboard motor they need to look at upgrading the basic design. Everything is pretty much self contained on a outboard except for the cooling system and thats it's Achilles heal. The first to design and build a outboard engine just the way they are now but with a closed water cooling system would just dominate the market I'm convinced. "Come on man" if people are willing to spend $75,000 for a boat motor and buy like six of them for their off shore boats whats another $10,000 grand per motor for an engine that could easily last twice as longp👍
