I have had two night guards and they have made my TMJ pain worse. I got them for clenching and I ironically bit down on it causing me to clench more in my sleep. Another TMJ doctor I saw said it was due to them being bottom night guards (which push the jaw back). He suggested a top night guard and said it takes time to get used to and see it working. I’m not that hopefully it might help :(

My advice- if at all possible, get one from the dentist, everything she said is 100% on point. I stopped wearing mine for a while and fractured a tooth. I am now looking at $$$ for an implant and yes I have gone back to wearing my night guard from my dentist. Well worth the money. I’ve tried over the counter ones and there is no comparison. The one from my dentist snaps in and is part of my nightly routine….save your teeth and in the long run lots of money, time and hassle - just get it and wear it.

DLH Have you gotten your implant yet? I've just started researching and read that bruxism can cause implants to fail. I'm not sure if a night guard totally fixes that. Do you know? I will have to talk to my dentist and oral surgeon.. Hate to spend all that money on the implant and custom nightguard to have it fail but the other alternative is to lose my teeth. I hope it's working well for you.

How are you doing with your night guard now? Hope you have a pain free jaw, and happy teeth
@loristevens1182 Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for making this video. I didn’t get a mouth guard at my dentist because I heard other people saying that it came out at night while sleeping and because of the cost - I didn’t want to pay for something that was going to be ineffective. My solution was to treat the root cause stress and anxiety by eliminating caffeine and taking unfortified nutritional yeast for natural vitamin B and take vitamin D3 before bed. That has helped but now I’m realizing that I need to implement more lifestyle changes - slow down do less even if that means being less productive. I watched a few KZbin videos that gave me relief from popping and clicking in my jaw and relaxed my jaw muscles using acupressure, message and jaw exercises. I just bought a night guard online that I take an impression of my teeth then the impression gets sent to a lab and molded then shipped back to me for less than $120. I’m hoping that this night guard is comfort, protects my teeth and reduces clinching.

I'm with you; I can't fall asleep without mine. I've been wearing a retainer after braces and thena real night guard for like 15-20 years. I'm 29 and have been grinding my teeth my whole life. My dentist told me in a few years I could need all sorts of dental work besides the fillings I already have because my teeth are very flat. Sometimes I'll wake up to my spouse gently holding my jaw to get me to stop and I wake up with headaches and jaw pain sometimes that'll last for several days. Also migrating pain of my upper teeth which comes and goes away. How is the pain now. Please let me know.
@2dreamis2be Жыл бұрын
I got a custom made hard night guard to wear over the upper teeth from the dentist recenty. Within a few weeks of wearing it, I started having cracks on multiple lower teeth on both sides. The hard plastic outer shell of the night guard has multiple textured spots from my lower teeth grinding on it, which I find ironic. I wouldn’t be surprised if the mouth guard led to my cracked lower tooth. Theoretically speaking, since the mouth guard is a thick piece of plastic, it reduces the air space between the upper and lower teeth, so the teeth come into even closer contact than without the night guard, likely making grinding more likely. That’s what I’m thinking is the case but will see what the dentist responds with. I’m seeing another dentist tomorrow to get a better look on the cracks. What’s been working better than a night guard for me recently has been putting a rolled towel under my neck to open up then jaw while I sleep. It takes some adjusting to and I had to experiment with various pillow thickness or none of, but supporting the natural curvature of the neck in bed has been helping and I wish I had tried this instead of the night guard.

I've recently been having a lot of severe stress migraines. And this week alone I woke up about 3 different days to pounding headaches, an achy jaw, and somehow I bit my tongue in my sleep. The headaches could last all day. I remembered my sister used to wear mouth guards when she was younger and had very similar symptoms so I bought one on Amazon. Waiting for it to come in. But I'm pretty positive I'm grinding my teeth at night or clenching too hard while I'm sleeping. So maybe the guard will help prevent those migraines

@natepeace173710 ай бұрын
@@HelderP1337 oh man I feel for you on the Apico! Why do they even recommend that? So painful on the recovery! If I knew what I knew then I would have gone straight for the implant! Implant is fine, just go to a dentist that has the sense to allow enough time between procedures for the bone to build up after the bad tooth initial extraction, and then after the implant to allow everything to set properly. So it took about a 9 months from start to finish. Extraction, build up bone wait 6 months, implant, build up bone allow to set, then new tooth. Some less experienced ones will rush the process all at once so be careful. Otherwise if done properly they’re great!
@HelderP133710 ай бұрын
@@natepeace1737 good to know you've had good experience with that implant, thanks for the tip on waiting enough time to recover. This apico was done more than a decade ago, actually. The recovery was absolutely fine, at least I don't remember having many problems with it, maybe I'm a good healer and/or pain tolerance. I do have a lot of sensitivity in this molar, and it's been bothering me, but my issue is my gum. I'll either need to do a gum graft, or go straight to the implant, I gotta get some recommendations on which to do, usually I favor options that allow you to keep your original teeth. A dentist made a night guard incorrectly and it caused lower jaw to move back causing severe sleep apnea and 15 lb weight gain ! It has misshapen the skin under my jaw and teeth are still breaking. He had to make the guard after he botched up my bite doing a bad occlusal equilibration.

Hi there - great content as always! I read the article on your website (5 Reasons You Need a Night Guard) to get your opinion on something but it wasn't mentioned. I've read that people who breathe with their mouths are prone to getting cavities. Would a mouth/night guard prevent this? If bruxing is not an issue, what type of material would you recommend to take care of this?
@TeethTalk3 жыл бұрын
hi friend! great question! and thank you for reading the article!!! so - breathing through mouth slightly leaves the realm of dentistry - although related - it is best to visit an ENT (ear nose throat doctor) to determine how to stop breathing through your mouth. sometimes it's related to sleep apnea and such (and a sleep test would be recommended)! hope this helps!

Just went to my dentist as I’m showing signs of wear (small divots/holes on some molars) and they said a night guard is $750… and that the OTC ones can cause serious issues if they aren’t fitted properly. Guess I’ll be chewing through my retainer.

I don't grind my teeth but I do bite down hard. It created teeth that are misaligned, and in the last year have started to get painful. I'm in my 40s and still have all my original teeth, but lately I can feel the damage from clenching through the night. What is my best course of action?

I've been wearing a guard for about 20 years and they are absolutely worth it. I had a lot of trouble when I first started wearing it. I would wake up with it next to me in bed, on the floor, or sometimes on my forehead. I got used to it and now I can't sleep without it. I replace my guard as recommend and I shudder when I look at the damage I did to the old one.

Almost none of the current dentists is telling us about the side effects of the night guard and what kind of other problem may cause sometimes even worse and more dangerous. I have hard time sleeping with my mouth closed, and an open mouth is likely to get dried and prone to cavities and other problems, if the fit is not well done, it can create continuous pressure on root canals and other teeth which may shift and if not properly disinfected, it can cause gum infections and peritonitis, and it is absurd on its box. in order to prevent damages to the mouth guard, it is suggested to be washed with cool water only but cool water does not have the ability to remove harmful bacterial. Should we address the cause of grinding and clenching and EDUCATE people to remove particular bad habits and find ways to decrease stress???

We should be make aware: Nightguards that are made of plastic and related substances can contain phthalates in various forms to make sure that they are durable and robust. Unfortunately, the effect of these substances on human beings is not well understood and requires further research. phthalates Phthalates are endocrine disruptors, and exposure to phthalates has been linked to breast cancer, developmental issues, decreased fertility, obesity and asthma. It's these germs that can be found on night guards which can lead to sore throats, nausea, colds, flu, chest infections and even asthma, strep and staph infections. Just to top it all off, your night guard also has the potential to be a reservoir for bacteria that can cause gum infections and promote tooth decay.

Will a night guard keep the mouth closed at night? When I roll onto my back in the middle of sleep my mouth opens. I have been using tape but wondered if the mouth guard is a better way to keep the jaw closed. Also since any injury to my gums will create a canker sore, will a night guard rub on the gums and maybe irritate the gums?
