Talks about whales, shows pictures of orcas, which are technically dolphins. Clearly, our school system isn't doing enough.
@I_like_pi_5 жыл бұрын
@Tatsujiro Kurogane No, orcas are undisputably dolphins. It's very black and white. A long time ago, whales broke off into toothed whales and baleen whales. Of the toothed whales, a certain branch which broke off, called delphinoidea, which later broken off into three branches: 1. all oceanic dolphins, 2. All porpoises, and 3. The beluga whale and narwhal. The first branch that contains all oceanic dolphins contains the killer whale. The killer whale, or orca, has a common ancestor with all dolphins that only other dolphins share. That makes it undisputably a dolphin, not a whale. They do happen to be the largest dolphin, but evolutionary history matters more than size. They are called "killer whales" because ancient sailors saw them killing whales and called them "whale killers" and that got flipped around. Their latin name, Orcinus orca, also references their violent nature, but it doesn't mistakenly identify them as a whale.
@everettwebster55245 жыл бұрын
Orcas are dolphins, but dolphins still count as whales
@I_like_pi_5 жыл бұрын
@@everettwebster5524 No, dolphins and whales are both cetaceans, but they are completely separate groups. Dolphins and porpoises evolved from a group of toothed whales to have very distinctive features from other cetaceans. The name given to the cetaceans not belonging to that group, which didn't evolve many distinctive features to separate them from one another, is whales, while dolphins and porpoises had distinctive features that made humans decide to give them their own name. Therefore, whales refers exclusively to cetaceans without super distinctive features such as dolphins and narwhals, while dolphin, such as the killer whale (or more accurately, "whale killer") refers to a group with particular distinctive features due to a common evolutionary history with each other.

How is a kid supposed to get ahead in life if they can't name the difference between a Blue Whale and a Sperm Whale? What if a potential employer ask a candidate to name a medium-sized toothed whale that possesses a large "tusk" from a protruding canine tooth? I'm sorry but our not getting that position as networking specialist!
