I timed my visit for the Tower to be close to sunset, and bought a stairs ticket instead of the elevator. I didn't quite have the stairs to myself but it was a lot less crowded than the elevators. I was happy with my second level view. For The Louvre, I used your trick of going in through the underground mall so I got in fast; I also went on an evening they were open late. Many of your tips really helped me on my 2019 trip!

Hi Jay. All of your advice was spot on. I am a retired teacher of Spanish who with my colleague, a teacher of French, traveled with high school students to Europe many times. We divided our Spring break for many years between Madrid and Paris. We had 5 days in each city. While in Paris we also managed to visit Versailles and Giverny. Lucky for us we were able to admire Norte Dame in all of her glorious splendor each time!

Jay!!! I just spent two weeks in France (a good chunk of it in Paris) and your Paris In My Pocket Guide was sooo incredibly helpful!! As someone with decision making paralysis, I found myself constantly referring to it as I was overwhelmed with all of the amazing options that Paris has to offer! It was well worth the money as it made our trip so much more enjoyable. Also, we did the Bike About Tour of Versailles per your recommendation and it was easily one of the most fun and memorable days of our trip. Thank you for helping us make the most of our stay in Paris, we are already trying to plan another trip back! Also, we ate at Kodawari Ramen twice because it was that good-we probably would not have found that spot had it not been in the guide, so thank you!

Was not too hyped about the catacombs, so I avoided that. We didn’t go up the eiffel tower, but seeing it was cool . A boat ride on the Seine was a last- minute decision, and one of my favorite things. Seeing l’arc de Triomphe made me cry!! Loved Napoleon III’s apartment in the Louvre! And Musée d’Orsay was fantastic. We stayed in Montmartre and loved it so much. 2018 Notre Dame was astounding, as well as st. Chapelle, even though a waiter near Shakespeare & Co. insisted it was a tourist trap and tried to talk me out of it (?) The stained glass is stunning!

Not knowing what I was getting into I ventured down into the catacombs with a friend who had to see them in 1989. I was so freaked out that I RAN through them to the exit! Scary, horrifying, devastating, claustrophobic inducing…if you want to look at and feel the dead souls of thousands of people staring at you…go. But just know once you enter there’s no turning back. You have to go through to the exit at the other end! 💀🫣😫😳👻

One thing I would add is that the space behind the Notre Dame cathedral is a really chill little park that is surprisingly uncrowded for where it is. If you need a little hangout with benches, shade trees, a few kids and a few pigeons, right in the center of Paris, it's perfect. Not sure if it's open during reconstruction of the cathedral.

After following you for three years in preparation for a trip that got postponed by the pandemic, we finally got to go this spring so I can comment with a bit more authority. LOL. It was my second time going up La Tour (in 10 years) ... I'd do it again, I love it. But it is true, part of the magic is also enjoying it from outside in the park. The Louvre ... also second time visiting ... I think it is very dependent on the type of art you like. In my case, I won't be going back. We'll go for a Moulin Rouge show next time for sure! I'd suggest going up to the top of the dome in Sacre Couer, it gives you a completely different view of the architecture and the views are WILD! plus you get to feel like Prof. Landon a bit. I love Paris, can't wait to go back. Thank you for all these years of fueling our dreams to visit the most wonderful city in the world (it's my opinion so far;-))

I'm reminded of an Art Buchwald column in the International Herald-Tribune in the early 1960s which I read in Nice when I was a kid. He recounted the Great Louvre Tourist Race in which the contestants needed to see all the relevant best-known art works and utter some pithy remark while briefly stopping at each one -- briefly because it was indeed a race. Dashing through the corridors, elbowing your way through the throng at the Mona Lisa (there's always a throng at the Mona Lisa) and saying "I don't see what's so great about it" then galloping on towards Géricault's Raft of the Medusa (another obligatory comment) and rounding a corner to find Winged Victory (a final comment here) and exiting the door, ending the race. Can't remember the winner. I think it was some overweight guy in shorts and a Hawaiian shirt from somewhere in the Midwest.

Le Lido on the Champ de Elysees is also a great choice if you cannot get tickets for Moulin Rouge. I would not eat dinner at either. The dinners are very expensive and the food is better anywhere else. Champagne and desserts are good. Le Lido also has a New Years Eve show by the Arc de Triumph. If you go out to see the fireworks you cannot go back inside. So take your things! Or, stay at Le Lido and enjoy a countdown and dance on stage after the show on NYE. ❤️🤗 Thanks Jay for the great tips!

Hi Jay! Thank you for the video! Back from Paris on Monday. I visit about 3 times a year for a short period. After so many times in the city I finally went to the Moulin Rouge. It costs 120 euro pp with champagne. I liked the show (although less the bits with the poor snakes, they should take this part out, it's just animal abuse). The acrobats are phenomenal! We also took for the first time a food tour with Paris By Mouth which was a lot of fun. The city is already very crowded, and we are not even into the summer vacation. Sacre Coeur and the area is way too crowded- so if you really want to enjoy it- it's best to come early, and then maybe in the evening to watch the sunset (although it will be crowded). Same goes to the Eiffel. I really think they should put more police in the area. The number of scammers and people trying to sell these little towers are making the whole experience annoying as hell. I didn't go there for a long time for this reason. For the rest- I just love this city, no matter what. We had a great time. My favourite place in the world.

@wberckmann2 жыл бұрын
I agree with Jay, as far as he goes, on all except the Moulin Rouge (I've been to Paris over 50 times). M/R is overpriced and under-talented. It's got a reputation from long long ago but doesn't live up to the hype today. You'll also notice that all photos of it are from one spot. That's because this is the most seedy neighborhood in Paris and any other view illustrates that. For a much better experience, try the Lido on the Champs Élysée or Paradis Latin in the 5th. The problem is that the "main attractions" are not necessarily the best of Paris. Certainly the Opéra Garnier is among the best. But, some of the greats are other museums: musée d'Orsay, musée de Cluny (moyen age) and others; the magnificent Père Lachaise cemetary; a boat ride on the Canal St. Martin; the Parc Monceau, Jardin du Luxembourg; Place de la Contrescarpe and la rue Mouffetard; the passages couverts and so much more.

We didn't visite all, cause of money we prioritized free sites (Notre-Dame, Sacré cœur...) outside view ( we walked a lot ! ) but we want to the Eiffel tower by the stairs ( a bit a nightmare vor me with my scare of high), Jardin des Plantes, historical shops for the girls when the boys went to the musée de la marine (naval museum), Sainte Chapelle, Versailles. What's more impressed me, maybe because it's not well known but not only it's la Sainte Chapelle and the " down" Chapelle, the oldest part, roman part. I felt the history, the calm of the chapel more for personal inside thinking, the high chapel with those glass windows "reaching" the sky is very bright, joyful drives your thoughts more to the outside world. Every body will have different sensations, that was my.

A cathedral is the seat of the BISHOP and thus the seat of the diocese. People tend to call all large churches "cathedrals," but they aren't always. But they might be important churches and thus called "basilicas." I've been to six of the "seven cathedrals of Picardy," but the one I haven't seen yet, Saint-Quentin, is not technically a cathedral, only a little ol' "basilica."

I’ve gone to Paris twice, 2017 & 2918. Had a wonderful time both trips. People were wonderful both times. I hope to return soon.

Yes, I agree. Parisians are rude, inconsiderate, and somewhat nasty, and that's just what the rest of France says about them. I didn't come to France for the French people. Well, OK, didn't come to Paris for the Parisians.

I agree ! I’ve been there once and I didn’t like it! I’m going back this August though with friends! I love Rome and London! People are nicer! Sorry Parisians!
