The way they continually stalk you is pretty terrifying, luckily there are dead spots they don’t really enter. It’s odd how they made it so you can spend a lot of time without seeing them despite them knowing where you are.

1:40 From a point of view of a game developer, the way the patrol knows where you are constantly makes sense because facing the natives is one of the main game mechanics of this game. If isn't like that, the player would be able to avoid them, thus killing this main mechanic, and removing the danger that the game has to offer. There are two ways to do this, basically: The first way is to make the patrol roam around randomly, or make them aim at the player's location. The second way is to make the patrol spawn in an area around the player, which isn't very good because the player can feel the enemy spawned that out of nowhere. An example of what the player can do if they avoid the main source of danger is Hello Neighbor, the source of danger is the neighbor, that roams around the house looking for the player... But you can bypass this by bypassing a door that leads to the second floor of the house that the neighbor can't reach, thus removing completely the neighbor from the game, you don't need to worry about him catching you and sending you home, you can explore the house as much as you want. An example of a game that failed in making enemies spawn around the player is Cyberpunk 2077's police before the update. Since they didn't a path from the police, at any time the player goes against the law, the police will spawn around the player... Since it's ugly to anything spawning right in front of the player, things usually spawn behind the player. This information made people play with the police, looking at a small balcony with no way to get inside, giving the back to this enclosed area, breaking the law, and forcing the police to spawn there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYetpYZuqK9nZpo&ab_channel=dscottwilson In a few words, even if isn't realistic, the way The Forest did is the best way, they don't spawn around the player, they do roam around, and the player can't avoid them.

I just started this game recently, about a month ago. I discovered how much I love survival games when I played Subnautica for the first time last winter, and after finishing the sequel this was first on my list to play next. Farket, your videos have been tremendously helpful to me, and I'm excited to see you're still active in this game. About to finish my first playthrough, got caves 7 and 8 to do and then onto the final one, and I wouldn't have been able to do this without your help. Cheers dude!

The way they designed the cannibal movements is to ensure a fair amout of encounters while at the same time making sure that you don't end up with 50 cannibals assaulting your base, which could very possibly happen if they just let cannibals wander randomly because then they'd have to increase the number of spawns to keep the same average number of encounters. I'm studying programming, hope my explanation makes sense

a LOT of iterations of the game ago, like before they even ad the tower for the glider, i made a zip line "base" at the far right of the map where the water almost meets the sea. i built platforms to get up and stair cases to run up the cliffs nearby. then i had ziplines going as far as i could- at this time, i didnt know of any mod menus for stretching lines out. anyway, i made platforms and ziplines as far as i could, made my base with all the racks for drying and a bunch of shells for water- all that. the point of my base, though, was that it was wide open, and they dont really path up into structures, so if too many were hitting the walls, id just zip away. since they have no reason to just keep attacking, cause im gone, they stopped destroying my home and i could just make the "circuit" of ziplines back, and by that time, they will have moved on. i want to make this again but i havent gotten on in a long time. am i wrong in assuming that if i load that old version, it wont be compatible with todays version? it was really fun ziplining for 2 mins around the map and coming back to an empty area.

I was super excited to see a new Farket video, welcome back my friend. I wanted to add: I think part of it is associated with the amount of cannibals you’ve killed. There’s this one spot near the top of the map that is GREAT for a small scale base and it’s outside of the patrol routes. I’ll go build up there and I won’t see a cannibal at ALL, the whole time I’m cutting down trees and building. However, once another player shows up, the cannibals are now nonstop. I think because the other player had been killing many cannibals, making themselves a larger target, and now I’ve had to kill them so now they won’t stop coming for me even if the other player leaves. I’m not complaining, I enjoy combat with the natives of the peninsula, I just thought it was something to note.

I'm pretty sure the enemies keep wandering near player exactly because of gameplay and performance reasons; it's not that different from how most other games do it (spawn and simulate only areas near player(s), despawn almost everything else). There's no reason to waste processing power on enemies on the other end of the map, though some games might still do that anyway if it affects player structures, etc., or if the enemy is wounded and should be kept in memory so player can for example go back to their body and avenge themselves. Keeping just small number of enemies active and keeping them near player makes the world seem much more active without making consoles choke on CPU cycles (because we all know The Forest was made with vastly inferior consoles first and foremost).
