Makes ypu paranoid as fuck. I hear a rabbit or a lizard zoom past i shit and instamtly turn around. One time i was just chopping down trees and i heard foorsteps, thought it was just a rabbit of somesorts. Anyways i finish chopping down the tree and i turn around to check what it was then bam! It was a dam mutant with like four legs (i think they call em spider mutants or something), scared the life outta me aye. And for some reason, once i spotted him and his mates trying to ambush me. The cannibals went fourth with the ambush but then the spider mutant just... backed off, like legit started backing up slowly. Thats made me paranoid as fuck for the rest of the in game day ahaha.

@@ThatGuy-sw9ic the spider mutant is called "Virginia" or "Legsy" sometimes. The one with the arms is called "armsy", the fat big rhino one is called "cow man" or just rhino. And there are two other mutants though they are very late game, the worm/sausage mutant and the spider mutant, which is like an actual huge spider

Im low key so territorial against them that I get mega pissed off when they place effigies in front of my wall lmao. More annoying than fruit-flies lol and I try to prevent them from placing them again by putting my own effigies but they’ll still place one right next to mine 🤦🏻‍♂️. The only thing that prevents them from replacing effigies is building something on top of their favoured spot like defence log spikes. Nothing against the cannibals themselves I only attack them when *they attack me* so about half the time they’ve grown to avoid being the first to confront me. But they don’t see me going out of my way to place my effigies in *their* villages, so i can’t believe the bullshit when I see their effigies on my front yard 😡.

I think, the removal of trees disrupts their natural movement. I dont play on any kind of creative mode. The families ive observed, at times interact with the trees. Several minutes, of one or two sitting up in the branches. Ive witnessed a "leader" climb a tree, and suddenly die. The single female who was with him, stood by his corpse and made fearful sobby cries, until she spotted me. I know the trees are "in the way" if you want to record their routes. But if you want to watch how they naturally move around day to day, the trees need to be there.

7:40 in and I noticed, 2/3 times the cannibals were praying, after they were finished, a bird landed on your character's hand. There's a lot of info going around about how this is a warning sign of an incoming raid from cannibals, however I don't know if it's true or not. For me, it's mostly been true, every time a bird lands on my character's hand, a raid happens at my base minutes later.

The bird just lands on your hand when you've been sitting still a while. It probably happened in the video because while they were praying would be one of the only times he'd be sitting still to watch them a while.

It's great to learn anything more about their weird AI. I can't help but wonder how much the Observer Effect impacts this though. While you're technically invisible, they still head track your location as seen in the last few seconds where they stare at your floating body while in free cam. Thanks again for all the work you do.

+Levi Black yeah the head tracking happened a bit at in this video because I was still learning distances. I was getting too close. I've stopped doing it now. However, it didn't affect them from what I've seen. They kept on the patrol path exactly. Cheers

Thank you for this great job, thing is if you build in some where they don't usually pass in the map they will find you eventually and come to you, then some patrols paths will be change and get random paths.

Farket my friend and I builded a base in the Nothern part of the map, and we hadnt seen one canabil yet there, but then we cut down 10-15 trees and they were all coming, i think on the first day there were like 4, then 0after that day we build a Tree house and there is begans, since then every day (4days in totall) there were fucking us up, every minute there was 1-8 it was so frustrating that we builded explosivs and blowed the hell outta them, but it wasnt enough ...

It is actually scary how good they are at finding you! Their AI is probably the best I've seen in a game to date! I started a game for the first time and built a few bits not far from the main camp near the plane, then decided it might be a tad too close so changed my position to the seashore by the river that flows down, if you follow it enough you get to the hole on your left. Either way I built a fire, a mini camp and whatnot, and I kid you not on the first night I'm making a water collector, I spin around to grab the shell, turn around and there's one of the woman cannibals just standing there staring at me, about 10 feet away, next to my log holder. I shat myself. After chasing it off I decide to sleep, in the morning I start building a wall around my camp, and as I'm going down the mountain with a full log sled I hear a sound over the scraping. I stop moving and hear nothing, but I was positive I heard a noise, so I let go of the sled and spin around, blocking and watching the distant trees. As I move closer a lizard runs past me which made me jump, assuming it was just the lizard I heard I felt calmer, but then I heard a sudden low pitched growl, spin around and see one of the skull backpiece cannibals NEXT TO MY SLED, it then runs off in to the trees. I'm not sure I can play the game after that, you literally aren't safe ANYWHERE! Brief edit now that I'm a bit more familiar with the game and have completed the story. The spot I first built at was near the singular cannibal hut near the main cannibal base, but I soon moved further along all the way down to the turtle spawn spot near the fertile lands, then after the two cannibal encounters I moved up to the fertile lands. I've since restarted so I could freshly begin in the fertile lands, and I've expanded by base a ton. Sadly though, I only get cannibals in groups of two every few days, with a ton of Armsys and the odd Virginia the rest of the time. Using the artifact sorted that out though, I get floods of Cannies now!

Then suddenly on the 11th day I got rushed by 2 females and one of those chieftain guys. Not what I expected. Then I had times where they showed up on the first day! I dun like it.

My *theory* to why they build effigies is to mark territory between tribes, to scare rivals off, and/or to mark where they patrol. Basically to assert dominance. I've noticed how around day 14 and around my base, they started to build effigies at the same time I decided to put effigies up myself. In other saved worlds, I've noticed how the cannibals would put up effigies nearby my base. Upon taking them down, I've also noticed cannibals don't show up around my base as often.

I was looting the plane at the start, I started looting the suitcases, got back in the plane, they spawned, I attached them, they killed me then I came to in the cave with the map. I was only playing maybe 15 minutes when the spawned. I realized then that this game has no mercy.

Downloaded this last night on the PS4 for £13.99! I was a little unsure if I'd like it to start with but the longer I played the more I enjoyed it. This game is great! Didn't realise the actual scale of the map. I have survived 3 days now, just built a log cabin. I built my log cabin next to one of the caves which has a rope dropping down some distance into shallow water below than it goes further into even more deeper cave systems which I've yet to explore. I found a good secret here regarding the cannibals, every time they come to my base to either stare at me or attack me which they have now started doing more frequently now I just run to the cave hole and start to climb down the rope (hanging at the edge) the cannibals hang around by the hole for a short while, screech then disappear within seconds. I climb back out the hole and carry on with my base building, works great for new starters!

Normally if im playing on harder difficulties, i make my main base a boat on a beach with a ton of traps so that in case i get attacked by a horde, i can just leave with the boat without losing any stuff, and since they go looking for your bases and sometimes go in the base and wait for you to come, i build many different structures across the map to throw them off and they end up going to the wrong base most of the time. I still get attacked but i have to deal with a lot less than if i just do one base. And if you want to avoid fighting big monster mutants (armsies, cowman, ect) Dont destroy effigies to avoid spawning armsies, and dont destroy too much nature ( cutting down trees, killing animals, breaking bushes ect) to avoid virginias and cowmans. Me and a couple friends played through this about a month ago and I had no idea the cannibals had patrol routes. We just assumed they knew where we were at all times because we played up to around day 50. After watching this I realized we built camp right along the path of one of their patrol routes. Crazy how the AI can be so complex. I like that you can see them building ephagies, adds more human traits to them when they’re otherwise feral. I also like that if one of them is killed in battle, the others will mourn their fallen comrade.

Watching this after my first failed attempt. Set up camp on the beach close to the landbridge. Made it to day 6 or 7 before attacks became so frequent that it bacame unsustainable. They attacked multiple times a day. I already suspected i might have chosen the cannibal interstate as my bedroom. Thanks for confirming this to me. So i gave up and built me a nice treehouse way down south near the yacht and a big tree. much quiter so far.

For me, the AI in this game is one of the BEST in a game. They actually act like a person, investigating and examining you, your base, everything. They call for help, they have patrol routes, they don't instantly attack. It's amazing. It makes the game much scarier. If they would attack you instantly, it would just be more boring. But since they examine and stay back at first. You don't really know when they will attack or if they will attack.

I know that video old but i just want to say , i started 3 times new game in the forest and i always put my base in that lake (2:50 from the video) and i noticed that its the safest spot to build meaning you are in the water and only the flying monster can touch you. The spot is good for resources too: trees ,sticks , berries poison mushrooms for arrows , a lot of rabits and lizards near the lake, poison berries also, aloe good to .... and you have rocks on the water so its easy to start building... also i used ziplines to go in and out of my base...perfect :) Farket i really enjoy your videos , and the ones with calm building are so relaxing....i hope one day you continue with "sons of the forest" :)

+Myon Cheers :) - Its hard to tell their hostility. On day 4 or 5 a lot more cannibals started patrolling.I think towards the end of the series I might build a big base and see what happens. - I don't believe Red Paint will affect it but I can give it a go. I think i might test the red paint and hostility levels. - Weather has no affect from what I have seen, they act the same regardless. - Cannibals and crocodiles ignore each other. Cowmen can kill crocodiles and other animals though. - I am yet to destroy the effigies they worship though, that would be interesting. - Yeah they have to see you. Sound alerts them but that have to see you. Sometimes they are looking at me but their behaviour stays the same, usually when I go near them. - Deforestation and tree stump removal has no effect on their patrol routes. - Cannibals ignore dead animals. Dead cannibals will affect their routes, I will show that in one of the next videos. - Ill test the fires. That's a great idea. I think your theory about walls is correct. I built my first base just in the middle of a patrol route, didn't know because was my first play through. Got attacked almost every day so I decided to make some wood walls and traps to defend myself. First day they fell into the traps but after a few days I noticed that they no longer attack me in fact their patrol route is now different because they avoid my base, however I still see them every day walking near my base and then going back to the regular route, I thought it was weird but now makes sense after watching your video.

I'm new to the game and the first base i built is right on the patrol route on the eastern edge of the geese lake, since i noticed the abundance of resources there. At day 8 i have decided to build a base in the lake since the cannibals just die when they fall into deeper water. So i never had to fight them properly. I just built a narrow bridge from the mainland to my house and just pushed the attackers into the water with one hit. I always wondered why so many cannibals passed through the area. Thanks to you, now I know.

in terms of the far east island, ive had patrol routes come up onto the beach, and on the beach towards the north-ish side on the mainland next to the island. that seems to be an active path for them and also under/through the trees on the southern side of the river next to the fertile lands. The beach in front of the far east island is also a mutant spawn as well, the mutants will patrol the beach A LOT. most times they have a sidekick cannibal with them or another mutant

I can definitely confirm, that walls stop them. In my current playthrough, I have a wall where my house is about 50 meters, they just stop at the wall. My base is located on the hill to the far east 2/3's down on the map - in your map-notes you don't have any routes going to it, which is consistent with my experience so far in the game. It seems, because it's so far up the hill, they often don't come there.

I know it is an old video. But i m just amazed how long has the forest gone from a game with almost none sense in version 0.01 to 1.11 where cannibals are just amazing. The patrols actually change. Because the patrols from the skinny and cave ones actually will follow the patrols of Mutants and if a patrol from a mutant gets near your base they will attack it. Usually the patrols is with an armzy as a mutant. But I have seen once with a Virginia. There are 3 ways to go with this game. 2 safe , 1 meaning war for them The first safe one is trying to not kill the normal cannibals and only the skinny,cave ones and mutans when the normal ones arent there. If you kill a skinny or cave one while the normal ones are there it will decrease the chance for them to make peace with you. But I actually tested it and after killing a few skinny ones and then build a base on the geeze lake where I saw there are a few patrols there. I actually only found 2 cannibals in day 9 and 2-3 in day 12 to come kill me, the rest of them in the other days until day 14 when 2 armzys came with a few skinny and cave ones, the other ones just ignored me because I didnt fight them. I left back from cutting trees down to stay in my base on the geeze lake and they got back to their patrol and left, they didnt want really to kill me until I got to their main base and started killing them all at day 23. The other safe one is just backing up always when you see a cannibal and never kill them. Only the ones in caves idk if they decrease the chance for them to leave you alone or not. And the war one is just killing every single one that comes from a patrol or not. First you will see the skinny ones with a stick, but eventually the akinny, cave and normal ones will start have crafted club, their club and the crafted axe, and at some point I havent seen them have it yet and I m at day 52 is the thennis rackets, they can have actually sometimes help from the mutans patrols with their alarms. At first you can see only a mutant patrol with 1 armzy or virginia, I seen at the giant hole that there are usually cowman patrols arount it. I killed more than 4 cowmans since the 2 armzys and only 1 other armzy was in one of the patrols with the cowman. At the caves you find armzy patrols, in the deep forest virginia patrols and at the giant hole cowman patrols until "girl" mutans and even the worm start come in patrols. Actually the girl mutants are easier than the other normal mutants, they have lower health but bigger range and damage is almost better than the virginia, for me the virginia is almost impossible to fight melee because it keeps attacking you , not like armzy where you can avoid when he charges the attacks. But the girl mutans can be killed really easy if you have good weapons and are a master of killing mutants. I m waiting now to see the full worm coming and actually I have a question and pls respond... Are the girl mutans spawning from day 50 or not? Becuase the first one attacked my base at day 48 and another one in day 51 when I exited a cave.

I bought this game a few days ago and have set up a small camp in a location that I thought was fairly safe on Day 2. On Day 6 now and it felt like patrols were coming every 2 minutes. 8:37 is where I set up that camp. I just finished playing for the night and after watching the video I realize tomorrow I have to find a new home 😐

Was wondering why I was getting swarmed... Turns out I built in literally the worst place of all, going by your route markings. It was right by the landbridge. Terrible choice. Lot of bones, though

Nice to see someone producing actual content! Maybe u could have asked the devs about a map of those patrol routes. If they where not willing to give it to u u could still say: then i am going to find out myself. Maybe this would lead to future cooperation on their side, because they see u get the information anyways. Could safe u some time and give u more even more content for the future

you could also have removed all the trees with typing 'developermodeon' on the main menu and then pressing f1 to bring up the command window. then type 'cutdownalltrees'. you dont need any external programs for that its in the game files itself

I was cuttinf down trees at my base and a group of cannibals came to me and started attacking me but i just dodged every attack untill I pulled out my Katana and fucking destroyed them all by drinking soda to refill my stamina faster and keep swinging the Katana.. 1 skinny cannibal was left and he was just standing looking at me while im all covered in blood with a bloody Katana and I started moving towards him and he ran away so fast I couldbt catch him.. I havent had any raids for at least 3 days

+Takashi Haruki I am not 100% sure. I believe you start hearing cannibals even when they aren't there. Ive played with 0% sanity for about 30 days before. Didn't notice anything different.

My game also has been buggy lol, or maybe DUN DUN DUNNNN its the result of having 0% sanity. But what the bug is that i have invisible cannibals with masks on that my friends can see running around. Can't hurt me nor damage them, only my friends can. they alsi Scare the living daylights out of me bc you don't see them nor hear them come.

Late to the party question , but ..i tamed the regular ones , like they let me close and be quietly togheter because i am not into slaughtering them ( lol ) ..but still skinned attack them so regular tribes go back being aggressive the day after it ..only to forget about it some time later ..if i scare the skinned by killing some of them ..will the regular ones feel it as aggression ? I saw a video of when you start the game and never attacking and always block the cannibals that they are less hostile to you. When you start blocking for a while they stop hitting you and eventually you can go into their camps and they don’t mess with you. I don’t know if the mutants do the same though

There is some truth to this. But the developers have written in code that make cannibals follow the rules, and some dont. Its why when you wear red paint, they sometimes still attack. Best bet is to avoid them, stealth is good.

Best spot I have found to build is in the middle of water, build multiple platforms to jump across, mutants usually just run into the water and drown, cannibals can't cross your moat, pretty much breaks the game lol

I my case what I noticed when ever a crow make a noise cannibal shows up in a few second. This is what I notice in the game so I start paying attention to the crow sound .

I chose a sad place for my camp. I sat it up in the middle of their route so I got my ass kicked a few times and I've seen some mutants.. or... what ever they are... At least I'm getting a lot of skulls.... and bones... (I'm playing in normal)

Me too I'm near the round lake somewhere sometimes during the day they sniff me out. Usually can't get anywhere during the night. Been trying to make a treehouse thing so I can still get around

I built on the beach right next to where he said there were patrol routes of 4 cannibals, and right next to that there was a patrol of 5 cannibals. Luckily i made a boat so when i was attacked by a horde i pulled out with all my stuff. Mostly use trees to get around. The only positive thing about me being there is that it is rare for me to find big monster mutants. I only come across regular cannibals and regular mutants. Easy to kill but still a pain

The nice thing though is if you build on a patrol path you can keep taking them out and getting plenty of bones and meat if you eat them. I just like taking them out for armor, I mean they come right to you. It’s like Amazon but for bone armor.
