Range Rover P400: The hybrid is better than the V8!

The cheap seats of the @landrover Range Rover world is one with a short wheelbase and a mild hybrid 6 cylinder engine. The better option in the Range Rover world also happens to be the short wheelbase with the mild hybrid 6-cylinder engine. Now having driven both the Range Rover SV LWB with the 523 HP BMW V8 and this 395 HP Range Rover SE P400, MotoMan explains why.

Appreciate your observations on increased performance with the lighter inline 6 hybrids and shorter wheel base versions. Good point on interior longevity; I am someone that has always kept my car as long as possible and interior quality on premium luxury cars has not been an issue. My 2004, L322 with the lux pkg seats still has a beautiful interior. The leather is excellent. The perforated leather seats allow for ventilation, but I have seen them wear out relatively quickly.

I believe you actually have a LWB, as the 7 seat option is only available in LWB

This is the engine I’d get if I bought a new Range Rover. I just don’t like that BMW V8. I didn’t like the way the P400 was tuned in the Defender, hence why I went for the P300. However after driving the previous Range Rover with the P400 engine, I felt it was much better suited for this application.

Someone else likely already told you this, but this car is also the long wheelbase. Only the long wheelbase can be had with the third row seat, and it’s obvious with the length of the rear door. You call it short wheelbase but it’s the same wheelbase as the other one you drove.

People say these things are unreliable, but we also hear that they are selling like hot cakes. Also, despite the unreliability issues, range rover is the global best seller in its class, outselling mercedes G class, BMW X7, Cullinan etc. Seems those who can afford it are not too concerned about reliability.

All the experts reviewing Range Rover, even the top of the line luxury trim and SUV sporting ability on a freeway agree that multi-functional off road ability is a Range Rover strong point. You should get a Range Rover Sport model to review. The 510E top plug in hybrid PHEV model or the range topping V8 until the SVR is introduced.

JLR interiors jump back to brand new after some years with cleaning foam spray on leathers and makeup wipes when the buttons start to get sticky. Brand new.

If the fuel economy isn't a lot better vs non-hybrids, then this is all just political. The extra weight isn't worth whatever additional power is developed, in my opinion. What I mean is, if the fuel economy can't exceed 30mpg, then the car is either too big or it isn't really intended for daily driving in stop and go city driving because it's explicitly a high performance driving or for off-roading, or for working purposes, for instance, so these efforts at hybridization are just political.

Totally agree. As political as original seat belts that evolved into the high tech safety equipment we take for granted now, as political as early hybrids that evolved into EVs of today , and as political as emission standards that now give us 400hp cars that can do 30mpg via high tech turbos and computer managed systems. It all starts somewhere. Let the early adopters buy this thing and our engineers will do what they do to evolve it into something better over time in way we all benefit.

It's improper to think of this as a "hybrid" the purpose is to increase torque fill instead of just pushing more fuel or adding a larger turbo. In that sense, it does it's job as intended. The engine platform was never intended to work as a full hybrid. But having that electric motor actually adds some extended life to the motor and reduces the amount of work the engine has to do under full load. The 3liter engine is already fuel efficient enough for the size of the vehicle. It's not always about making a significant increase on mpg. Look back just 5-10 years ago with normal turbo 3 liter engines in trucks and they barely got 17mpg. A realistic 25mpg out of a full size SUV is pretty impressive.

I wish the new Range Rover offered better looking interior like the seats and the dash in the new Escalade Sports Platinum and v model. This new Range Rover is very boring compared to the Escalade. Also the reliability is big Problem and continuous with this new Range Rover. We leave in a different time where a Cadillac Escalade interior looks miles better then a Range Rover. The only thing that the Range Rover has over the Escalade is the rear interior, everything else goes to the Escalade. The new Range Rover needs an update to keep up with the Escalade😔

Yes they're handsome and imposing. Yes they should waft along - tell the yahoos in the Dallas area that think they're NASCAR vehicles 🤣 I'd rent one for 2-3 years. I'd never own one out of warranty. Please don't get triggered and tells me about your 200-year-old 12 million mile LR. I get it. But I spent quite a bit of time working in Land Rover service.

The SV and 7 seater are both same lengths I believe.... Long wheel base. The front facia is almost identical to other Range Rover and Jaguar model interiors sadly. This Russian doll effect transcends both on the exterior and interior sadly IN AUDI, BMW, MERCEDES, Range Rover etc... Hyundai approach recently is a great break from this tradition.... Each model looks very different from the other from exterior perspective only. Interior, they just copy and paste.

JLR are at the bottom for reliability by some way again (no suprise) in the latest car owners done across a large sample base in UK. Looks great, but reliable as a bar of chocolate in a heatway.
