I wonder if 60 years ago players bought a guitar and thought "this is too nice, I will find a beater to use on stage" and thats where the near mint 50s and 60s guitars come from that are valued at $30k plus.. If you buy something and dont use it, your a collector.. Id say play your nice guitars because someone 60 years from now is gonna dig the wear you put on it, its just a guitar.. No matter how nice it is.. Just an opinion.

Yknow, if you wanted a guitar that looked worn out, you could have just worn it out yourself, instead of presumably paying extra just to make it look like it’s worn out. Edit: you don’t even have to wear it out by playing it for a long time if you’re seriously that impatient, you can always take some sandpaper to the finish job and apply a bit of sealer afterwards it’s really not that hard

@paintitmatt

Ryan's point about guitars being a performance prop resonated with me. I tend to look at relics like a pair of jeans. Some people by pre-worn jeans, some people buy pre-worn guitars. They want the thing already worn in. And about the "blues lawyer" who buys an expensive relic guitar to "hang on the wall" - yo just finished talking about how relicing is an art, then complain about people who but them to hang them on the wall (even said they should be imprisoned, WTF dude!?). But that's *exactly* what you do with many forms of art (paintings, photographs, etc...) - buy it, and hang it on the wall. I'm for hanging guitars on the wall as art. And paying for it supports the artist.

that's different though. buying something "broken in" is way different than paying someone an extra 2000 dollars to take a belt sander to them. I do like relic guitars but I would never pay someone to do it. The only way I would do it to one of my own instruments is if I dropped it and chipped the body really bad or something. I would buy an old fender esquire thats just been played to the gates of hell and back. But I think its lame to buy a reissue vintage strat then spend another 2 grand for someone to fuck it up. but like I said, they do look cool, just not enough to pay that much.

@@READERSENPAII You've clearly stated you have no idea about how guitars are relic'd artificially. An old Fender Squier will never look half good if you try to relic it because the poly finish is almost plastic-y and won't crack and chip nicely like nitrocellulose lacquers do. Just try to relic a guitar and make it look like the guys at the Custom Shop do and you'll see it requires certain techniques and quite a few man-hours.

My personal tastes tend to lean towards Rayan’s style. I love the early 60s surf rock and rockabilly style guitars. As far as relics go, my instrument is a big part of my inspiration. I'm having a custom Tele made and I've had to tell the builder four times I don't want any relicing. It's so pervasive a trend that a custom guy can't wrap his head around the fact that I want a new guitar. On the other hand, I own a few used guitars and I have no problem with an instrument having a few battle scars if I like it as an instrument. Not to over generalize, but I think it breaks down largely along generational lines as I find that most guys my age (old) are not big fans of fake ageing. (Maybe because we have too much up close and personal experience with the real thing).

Brad Laue, Hey Brad, a good point, mate. Weird about the builder wanting to age it for you, though. But, damn, I guess that makes me old too. 😳 I do wonder if these same people would walk into a Mercedes dealership, buy a hundred odd grand of car and say, ok, before delivery, I want you to smash it up so it looks like I’ve owned it for twenty years ... and, oh yeah ... make it seem like I’m a really crappy driver. 😉 Have a good one, Brad.
@paulhudgins
@paulhudgins 4 жыл бұрын
@@bradlaue1718 If it is an age thing, then one should consider that in the 80's Fender switched to all poly finishes and from that point on getting a guitar to wear in naturally over time has pretty much disappeared as the vast majority of guitars have poly finishes. I have guitars that are 30+ years old that have been played heavily and they pretty much look like new finishes except for some scratches. I have a relic guitar that is only 2 years old that has already worn in a lot more from my playing than when I got it(topcoat coming off) because it is simply a Nitro finish.

I do believe the word was poser. Someone who would not dare be seen with a 25 year old guitar worn from actual use, but instead prefers a 'relic' instrument because they are soo cool! I believe in taking care of my instruments, not because I ever intend to sell any of them but I like to project the image that I take care of my stuff. I respect the established artists who continue to perform and appear with the same instruments we recognize they used much earlier in their careers and have acquired a bit of minor distress as a result of decades of constant use. Bruce Springsteen is a good example. Willie Nelson is an extreme example. What I resent is musicians playing instruments which are obviously faked to look like they were literally dragged across a continent without a case. Take Sting for example. Does anyone really believe that vintage Precision he plays actually got in that condition by the energy of him playing constantly? I do enjoy Sting but this element seems out of character. Overly distressed instruments give me the impression of being owned by the kind of hardcore punk musicians who truly care about nothing.

I'm about to buy a fender custom shop 64 strat. It is lightly aged and it has been designed and built by a professional guitar builder to look that way. I want a real 60's strat but I don't have £30k to buy one so I'm buying one that's been built to look like one, its brand new and it'll more than likely play, sound and feel better than the original for a tenth of the price.

What is it you like about L series strats most ? Is it having to remove the neck to adjust the truss rod or replacing the small vintage frets every two years ? An AVRI + a set of Fralins will cost you a lot less and meet your expectations as far as playability, sound and looks go.

@@tdunster2011 why do guitar collectors collect guitars? I have a reissue 62 strat already, it's nice and sounds good. It's just an American standard though. I can afford custom shop so I want a new one with a nice roasted flame neck and other custom shop appointments. I like the aged faded colour scheme. I'm not a professional musician, just a bedroom poser but it's what I want so I'll buy it and play it.

But I'll pay a couple thousand for a custom shop replica from the company that made them in the first place. Everyone who knows me knows I don't beat up my guitars (I still have my first 'real' guitar from 1980 and it looks almost as new as the day I got it - and I play a lot), it's just not my style.

I wanted a Fender Strat but didn't want to spend the $650+ for a new one so I purchased a 93' Fender Strat MIM, not a relic but a guitar that was in good condition and USED. Just bought a nocaster 51 heavy relic with a Seth Lover neck pickup and it sounds terrific and feels very comfortable as an authentic 51 télé I once played. When I play out people think my guitar looks beat up and kind of rough and in this sense it is the opposite of being posey. I play blues funk and rock and I feel my instrument fits these styles very well and I don’t have to worry about banging it up.

I've really struggled with the relic thing. I bought an Ibanez ASV10A-TCL, and felt pretty silly about the relicing, but just loved the guitar's feel and sound, and overall look. I really love Nash strats, too, and I realize that they're basically just a bunch of nice parts thrown together with a relic job, and can't quite reconcile paying for something to have a beat up look. But at the same time, the guitars play and sound great with stuff like Lollar pickups, and have a vibe that a brand new strat just doesn't have.

I specifically ordered my custom build from a luthier with a relic finish. I had a few reasons. Firstly I wanted a thinner finish so the wood could resonate more. Secondly it was a guitar that never got made in the 50s, and I wanted it to look like it was a prototype that was lost in time Thirdly, I knew the guitar was going to be awesome, and if it didn't already have wear and tear I'd be afraid to play it! The result was a super cool fantasy time capsule guitar that I happily play without worry.

I have guitars that are easily 30 years old, that have tons of play time, that look great. Maybe a bit of surface scratching that could be buffed out most likely. I picked up a guitar that looked like someone dropped it though, and it had some odd looking damage. I took some sandpaper to it to even the spot out, and it looks better that way. I would never have done that if it wasn't already damaged though.

On my way out I looked above the front doors and they had, "An official Clapton Strat used for years!" It was beat (reliced to death) and they were asking $12,000. LOL
