I count my blessings to have a place of my own in the country. Being retired and low income I know that I could easily find myself homeless. To help make ends meet I've taken in 2 tenants: retired older women with their own RVs. They get security, electricity, water/sewer and we can share my garden space and internet. I get a modest rent from them which makes my situation workable. We help and look out for each other. I give thanks to God .

This documentary should be required viewing for every government employee with any involvement in social housing. Of course the models to the south in Eugene and Seattle are the way to go. People have to get out of the dangerous environments of the homeless shelters and tent cities. These places are scary, and demeaning. Everyone needs a safe, warm, private sanctuary with a lock on the door. The cost eventually becomes much less of a burden on our taxes simply by less policing and medical requirements. It's a no brainer, and frankly, amazingly frustrating and infuriating that it can't happen in the lower mainland. Why can't Vancouver become a model for the world. Until this happens, we are a backwards thinking, blindfolded society that shuts itself off from true reality that is going to be so overwhelming in ten years from now, you won't be able to leave your house, without confronting homelessness. We'd better learn how to effectively deal with it soon, before it swamps us.

The people that just want a hand out or any reason y they decide to live in tent cities instead of going to a shelter or y ur city has so many homeless. Seems u have no understanding of the complex problem this is. Maybe do some reaebefore throwing out generalized solutions that have been tried and failed like the fact we tried housing and they treat it like the tent cities and it cost a ton of money to condemn these places

I know many of the reasons why it happens, but I really don't have a viable solution for it any more than anyone else. Eventually, small homes with a bedroom and storage for their few possessions. A common kitchen to cook for them. The people can help prepare the food too. I'd like to have bathroom, showers and laundry mat eventually. My coworkers are saints. I have been looking at shipping container housing that can be built over say 2 yrs by one or two people. I found this guy who built his own using two shipping containers set apart by a raised central area. He used solar for electricity and hot water, sourced used windows and doors situated near a woodland and small lake with a few cattle. He learned by himself doing almost all the work himself except for the Septic Tanks which hire contractors for. He got all his energy costs down to almost zero after initial layout. He is still finishing off the project starting by living onsite in a small campervan for $1800 with his lovely wife who fell pregnant during the end of the first yr but they coped and continued forging ahead despite making some mistakes along the way. He installed giant water tanks from collected rain water, generated electricity from solar also hot water from solar with batteries. I think this would be a beautiful way to house people permanently as these containers were cleaned up and painted for protection. They were mounted on 5 ft concrete pillars off ground and when closing to completion they looked so beautiful and attractive with gardens on the roof giving a look of a modern passive house design. Two containers with adjoining central raised area made for a spacious well thought out design that really got my mind thinking that I could sell my little brick house built around the turn of the 20th century into a vastly superior and cost effective dream home. My little cottage costs me an arm and a leg to heat and run where a container home could be almost free to power after initial cost layout. Every yr it costs me more for heating and taxes where the solar electricity and hot water on a container house would be almost free. It would also be cheaper if we shared a plot of land and could get a like minded bunch interested parties to work alongside each other. Its a project that could be learned along the way as long as one committed to the plan and put in consistent effort. It would I think also be fun to take on because you would be so involved in almost every effort. I really do think people will run with this idea more and more as it become much more obvious even two people working the cost of living is becoming harder and harder so we have reached a point that the normal wage which used to be the guy bringing home the bacon was enough to pay for all this has gone beyond now even man and wife both working or one of each working two jobs is not enough to pay for the rents, mortgage and sustenance!!! Its not something along the lines of hard times are here and at some point things will fall back into line where it is affordable but rather it is here to say at best but it will get from now on worse and worse to the pont where we have most people out on the streets unable to afford to just live indoors.

I have listened to many people talk about this feeling and it seems to be much about the feeling of hopelessness and despair. To be seen in public by everyone yet you for the most part are blanked out and ignored. I was waiting for a taxi at a shopping center and decided to sit on the ground as it was hot and I was feeling tired when a middle aged woman looked at me and though I was a homeless person. She glared at me and smirked slightly giving a look of almost hatred. Its hard to describe but for a brief moment I knew exactly what flashed through her mind as it was written all over her face. I was wearing all grey clothes that were what I used to go to work in so not looking smart in any way. She couldn't hide what she was thinking but I remember thinking what if people treated me like this all day one after the other..? It would feel terrible and I would begin to believe that I was worthless also. I watched a british TV programme where 5-6 wealthy celebrities switched their lives over to live as a homeless person for 1 or 2 weeks and their time would be filmed day in day out. Within the first day and night there was only a few remaining and after 3 nights all of them quit because they couldn't cope with the cold, hunger, fearing for your safety and public abuse. They could quit at any time however non had the 'whatever it takes' to last out even for the first week. I imagine this situation would very quickly attack your mental health putting you in a state of crippling anxiety, depression and then the feeling of being seen as a subhuman piece of shit. I am trying to find the programme again and remember one of the celebs taking part was an actor from Coronation Street. I am just wondering what you found out to be the worst aspect of being homeless..?

Housing prices were jumping in low double digits for a decade before 2008. Watching things get worse every year and finally jumping into the housing market in 2006 was how a coworker owned a house worth 35% less than what he paid for it 2 years after he bought it. Fortunately he still had a job. One that he qualified for the original higher value. Not everyone still had a job after 2008. Hopefully it won't get that bad again.

I don't understand why we can't just utilize a skyscraper with 7x7 foot units and a community bathroom for each 20 people... Being a single minority female in my 30s with no kids and 3 college degrees, able bodied, and just feeling so insecure about my situation. I was arrested for someone else's dui 2 years ago and was kept in jail for 7 months. After bailing out $3000, and losing my van, truck, job and house, no one wanted to be my friend. On top of that I was coerced into pleaing to assault on a peace officer... It has made me look like a criminal. I am an honest , hardworking person who didn't so much as steal a candy bar or lie to anyone before this all happened. But the truth didn't get me too far. Right now, I am dealing with countless court cases which have arisen from me trying to stand up for my rights which a) are ignored by the judicial system, law enforcement, and bosses(excluding whale city bakery...that was the most awesome job and owners and management EVER!!) but I could go on and on forever about the injustice an discrimination I've been dealing with, and these videos are all warm and fuzzy, but it's an inaccurate depiction of real life
@ljm78483 жыл бұрын
I am sorry to hear what you have been through. I hope you will get through it soon. I am sorry if my video leaves you with the impression that homelessness is a warm and fuzzy thing. It is definitely not. Video's target audience are people who have never known homelessness. These people often attempt to drive camps of homelessness people out of their neighbourhoods. One of the goals of video is to show that houseless people are not to be feared. So I try to show a lot of very normal houseless people in the video. A homeless camp can give houseless people a tiny bit of stability which can help houseless people get back on their feet. It is surprising to me to see how quickly people turn around when they have a safe place to sleep, eat and store their stuff. A tiny house, conestoga hut or even a tent in a secure location can be that safe place. Thus camps can be a benefit to the houseless. They can help society overall by reducing homelessness, visits to hospitals, and other social problems that accompany homelessness. So when a city resident discovers that there is a homeless camp in their neighbourhood, I hope they will go over to the camp and see if there is something they can do to help rather than calling the police... Again, I am sorry to hear what you have been through and hope that things will improve soon.

My brother lost everything that he had except his small SUV and he lived in it for aprox 3 months in a Walmart parking lot in New Mexico. But he is a real go getter and was gifted to get a job and then found a house to rent with 3 roomates and now he has a very good job in Texas and just bought a New house. I am so proud of him because he never got into drugs or any of that behavior. I am the one that did that kind of shit. He is 53 and I am 63 and in recovery because of opiates. I alway help out and also pray for the homeless. Some just lost things because of the economy. I know if it were not for my partner I would have become homeless again. And also for the power of God and prayer. I never judge anyone.

Dear Yetta, there are some organizations trying to help but the unfortunate truth is oregon has been a place where people can get away with stuff. We have a mayor who celebrates lawlessness and a governor whose platform is her bisexuality. Some of our officials through the years have been nothing more than greedy domestic terrorists who habitually cut off necessary services and practice nepotism. Look up what happened with Kitzhaber and his wife. Some of us found friends, neighbors and work and we are going to live where we're going to live. Who knows) anyway , they came from Portland Oregon. I always feel like I went to “the Portland school of architecture, at UBC”, rather “the UBC school of pro-developer/capitalist architecture” I learned so much about social welfare in architecture .... and how we need to build our cities from the ground up. A civilized city is where everyone is housed, and there should be no human wreckage upon our streets.

In the video I realised that even though it was a great community which reached out to the homeless, I heard that they have evicted people for breaking the rules thus creating homelessness. So in summary there seems that there will always be homeless because of eviction. There is only one place I know of that doesn’t have eviction that being prison. So there has to be an answer somewhere between eviction and a place that you can’t be evicted from eg prison. I don’t know what the answer is but I believe this is a really good starting point when thinking of ways to end homeless. It has to start at the eviction and some how to a place to sleep. My eviction was at 15 years old and homeless for many years currently had the same job for 10 years and I’m able to save a little but I’m still don’t feel safe to say that I won’t be homeless again because there is nothing in place at the point of eviction.

I don't think not having rules is the answer. If people can't see how the village is worth following the rules, then.... yeah, I don't know what the answer is. I don't think there should be excessive ridiculous rules, but also there needs to be enough rules to maintain a safe, well-working village. Maybe one thing to try is to allow some sort of 3 strikes rule with mandatory counseling on the matter after the first strike, or some sort of chance to explain, etc. Maybe that would help.
@WhitneyAbrina2 жыл бұрын
@@butterflybreath75 I stayed at a shelter with 3 kids when I was homeless and they tell you the rules that have zero tolerance when you first arrive. Most other problems they would tell someone and have them rectify the situation without kicking them out but if you're continually making problems they reserve the right to kick anyone out. Rules are necessary to keep things safe, sanitary and peaceful for everyone. And it's not as if you're not made aware of the rules ahead of time.

(speaking from being homeless for 5 years) All depends. There has to be a centralized motivation for it to actually help people. Throwing people who are struggling with mental health and addiction into a makeshift camp is a bad idea, will not work. Has to be support, emotional and physical. needs to be structure to reshape and transform them. (They have too want change no one can force them) Training the people to work together and listen each other is imperative to success. Most of these people just need someone to talk to. A shoulder to cry on. They need a bit of hope and inspiration. They need community more then ever. For me what really helped was removing all the noise/pressure society makes. I simplified my life and retreated into myself to find direction. Now i have direction and want to help others who are in the same position. I Believe wholeheartedly for homelessness to change, these homeless community are a step in the right direction, As long as the Director or person in charge is involved and Serious about severing others above himself/herself.

As one the homeless myself, I could definitely live in one of the Conestoga Huts without any degree of claustrophobia. In fact, the compactness would psychologically be beneficial, since sleep deprivation is a detrimental problem physically and mentally. Also at 13:57 are the Quonset awnings with the dome tents pitched within which are an excellent idea. Unfortunately ( let's be realistically objective please?) , there will be opposition to the solutions demonstrated here. First being the independent off the grid alternative living options that civic and government officials will be coerced to prevent due to loss of revenue and profit (by we all know who) and also the claim that property values will decrease even with appropriate fencing and trees (just like theirs but that's different and it just is! nimby wankers!). Secondly, we all us are IMHO mentally symptomatic from the street all the way to the (most especially) elite in power. Our social economic political climate are preventing the focus on the cause instead of the results and logical solutions. Cheers

The first place said they are on 2 acres with 48 or so residents and up to 60 when cold. Very poor use of land, if they used 12x14 sheds that would make plenty room for over 250 homeless homes with a bathrooms for all and club house leaving room to move around. With thousands of homeless, using 2 acres for only 48-60 people is not going to work. Math 2 acres = 87,120 sq ft. 12x14 shed = 168 sq ft. 87,120\168=518 sheds touching each other so 250 with moving room. These are for homeless NOT for living for ever. Of course a lot more is need then I said here but beats tents on a muddy ground.
