UPDATE: Rockey Is No Longer Homeless in Los Angeles • UPDATE: Rockey Is No L...
When I went to visit Rockey at her tent, she started to show me how she made a gate to keep people out. I wasn't yet set up with my camera but I started recording video. Rockey shows me how she ties a rope to the gate and then sleeps with the rope so if anyone tries to get in, she'll feel it and wake up. Homeless people and especially homeless women are constantly of being attacked. NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO LIVE LIKE THAT!
Some of you may remember Rockey from our behind the scenes vlog on the virtual reality movie made possible through a partnership with Oculus's VR For Good, film director Rose Troche, and Invisible People. You can watch that video here: • Homeless People Star I... Thanks to the help from Eric Montoya and LA Family Housing, Rose was connected to Rockey and the two became friends. The VR film is about Rockey's story and Rockey also plays herself in the VR experience.
Rockey has lived homeless in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles County for over three years. She has lived in this tent for about a year. Rockey says she had to make it as much of a home as possible.
Rockey had a bad turn of events that snowballed until she had no choice but to live in a tent. Rockey doesn't want to draw off the system forever. She wants to work. Rockey wants to be like normal people. Go home at the end of the day. Have a meal and watch television.
Rockey says life can change in an instant. If you don't have money to pay rent, you're going to try to survive. You build a tent. You get a trap. You grab cardboard. You do anything to keep yourself warm at night.

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as KZbin, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

When I was younger I was just two steps from being in this woman’s position. I had lost everything due to drugs.. my job in the fashion industry, my apartment, my family cut me off and due to my actions, I burned bridges with my friends that were allowing me to stay with them. I remember being on Bowery St in NYC sitting on my suitcase, crying... i had no idea what I was going to do. I proceeded to ask for money on the street, so many people passed me. Finally a gentleman stopped and asked why I was crying... I was honest with him and he said he would help as long as I went to rehab. He proceed to pay for the Fung Wah bus to get me to Boston and gave me some extra money to get home to NH..when I got there I went to rehab. I’ve now been off drugs for 15 years. I will never forget what that man did for me, he possibly saved my life. All it takes is that one person to listen and lend a helping hand. I love what you are doing with this channel❤️🙏🏻❤️

But,it is not paid enough so I can save some money and I have no health insurance. I live from month to month and I am thankful and happy. But,if something happens to me, I get ill or disabled, I can't have sick leave and I will lose my job and end up on street again. I pray to God everyday just to stay healthy and able to work. The older I get, the more I worry that something like this is going to happen to me. Despite careful planning and saving, the last decade has really crushed my family, and Covid was the last straw. I have a lot of sympathy for the homeless because this can really happen despite your best efforts.

99% ??? are you sure about that statement especially in California , true that lots of homeless guys have dugs and alcohol addictions but you do have no drug users that end up homeless too. In the US it can go pretty fast, 1/ lack of family support , most peole ar on their own, if you get laid off and get sick with no or little health insurance that can turn sour pretty quickly, 2/ how many people in the US ( any occidental country) own their home with no mortage on it ? Rent are expensive, cost of living to the roof, and too many people are chained to the banks with personal loans, credit card debt, car lease, college loans you name it and 3/ most people got meaningless/ redundant jobs in the services / financial /insurance /IT industry, most of these jobs are here for the people to pay the bank , difference between areal profession and a job and it does not matte if you got a master degree or not , 90% of college degree are useless, there was a study that show that tuitions fees for college increase by 300% between 1990 and 2010, we are now in 2023........so you get the picture, my point is , even without drugs and alcohol things can turn south rapidly @@riversidehermit

I am this Woman. I would be homeless too if it weren’t for my parents and I am 53 years old. One bad year of uncontrollable events took my bottom out. I had to leave my well paying job due to disability, I was living off of a small settlement from the accident. My husband had lost his job and really wasn’t interested in finding work again. The month my money ran out I found out he had found another woman. So he moved in with her and left me the responsibility of our high rent apt in Seattle. So my parents asked me to come live with them. 3 years later I am still waiting on Disability I paid into and have no income. Even with all the struggles I am so fortunate because I have family and not on the streets. My heart goes out to this woman.

She doesn't have a choice. When you're in a situation like this it's in a human's instinct to survive. When I went to jail in 2005 I was so used to having all of life's little amenities play a nice mattress hot water TV able to eat whenever I wanted but in jail you don't get shampoo brushes simple things unless you have money and the only way to have money is if someone sends it to you. Sometimes you can get socks or a t-shirt from the counselor or case manager actually mad. I was there for a month before my family would send me any money and I was given a small bar of soap a very tiny toothbrush and some toothpaste and some of that cheap roll-on deodorant. So I had to use the bar soap on my hair and my body. Monday morning the soap was so horrible that I became allergic to it and there was nothing I could do because otherwise I wouldn't be able to wash my body and so you figure out ways to survive.

No doubt there are multiple issues contributing to homelessness. People like Rocky and homeless families receive help because they are high functioning. 75% of homeless are either drug or alcohol addled and those with mental issues. Many do not want to be helped or are so mentally disabled that they make illogical choices. I worked with social service agencies and have seen this.

My sister once said people are homeless for a reason, like it's their fault, I disagree I believe there are many reasons people are homeless, but it is not their fault, I think a lot of people have relatives like mine that only care about money, that is one of the reasons people are homeless, I walked for a year & told my sister & her husband I needed a car even if it was a five hundred dollar junker to get me & my wife from A to B, they said nothing then she bragged how she brings in four hundred thousand dollars a night through her business, it made me feel so small & uncared for, it is people who think they are great, but in reality are self-righteous & heartless that should live like the poor, maybe then they would gain enough wisdom to know how to treat others.

In my community ,if a woman with children and without much money,becomes a widow ,she is given a three room decent apartment . Free education for her kids. All their medical needs are met . The whole family gets a monthly allownce. All this money comes from people voluntarily and spent carefully to help the needy. I am so glad that it is doable .Society should be able to take care of people down on their luck. It's happening in my small town called Chenab nagar in Pakistan.

I am homeless, so grateful to two different families that have taken me into their homes when my remaining family wouldn't answer the phone after my childhood friend and fiance died unexpectedly after a brief illness. I've lost everything and done my grieving around people that I hadn't known before Ted's death. People that don't have a lot themselves but I have eaten everyday, even had cigarettes, been allowed to claim a puppy that I still have for more than a year. I cried so hard when after having Christmas dinner with the first of these two families, I was handed two gifts wrapped like the rest of the family. It was a beautiful Christmas and maybe the most meaningful presents I ever received. So, blessedly, I haven't had to sleep in a tent or been on the streets yet but I'm so aware how close I am to that. I truly think that people that have less, give so much more. They know how it feels to be poor or do without where people in their lovely homes, look at poor and homeless people like we are lesser. So happy this beautiful, well spoken lady has a home. I hope she gets to watch T.V. and be tired at the end if her day, just as she spoke of. I lived in a very nice home, had pretty much anything my heart desired and all that was gone overnight. Praying to have another place if my own again, I'll never take a simple thing like a bed for granted again. The kindness of strangers, now family, saves me from who knows what. Terrifies me to think on what I may yet have to suffer. Bless us all, all the homeless, so many of us. Bless the people that care about us.

@gnome3928
@gnome3928 4 жыл бұрын
L Yang is far from a socialist. UBI is a long time capitalist idea. Socialism is when the government takes over means of production. UBI by re-allocation is capitalism that doesn’t start at zero because it allows the people to control to flow of the market. That’s why thousands of economists endorse Andrew’s plan. While other candidates want to create more programs, Andrew wants to give that money directly to the people to solve their own problems. Automation is changing the rules of capitalism. Replacing 40% of jobs with technology. That can be a great thing for society but a UBI will need to be implemented to allow capitalism to continue to thrive and benefit society. It’s a lot more complex than what you are currently assuming. Also it’s not just “free” money. Right now all the biggest tech companies are making insane amounts of money from mining our personal data. Yang would require them to pay us a small portion for us and allow us to turn off their ability to sell our data if we choose to opt out. Data right now is worth more than oil and technology is the oil of the 21st century.

I’ve been in some tough spots financially and without my family to help, I could’ve been in that same situation. We all need to remember that every human being has feelings and needs and hopes. Once they’re in that position, it’s almost impossible to get out unless someone has compassion and intervenes. Not saying some homeless people aren’t choosing to live on the streets without any responsibilities except to get loaded. Some just caught a bad break and need a hand to get back on their feet. Thanks for making and sharing this video. I hope it encourages people to step up and show the love of Christ to others.

Thank you. These stories really keep me grounded. My concerns/worries are minimal compared to what these people go through on a daily basis. I am so fortunate. I have a family, job, roof over my head. They are just trying to get through the day with no guarantees of food, shelter or safety.

I know. I've been told I'm naive, but she would be a welcome friend. I would do anything I could to help her. When one of my daughters was about 9, I (as a single mother of 3) gave a homeless man, who said he was hungry, $5. My daughter (already cynical, unfortunately), said "mama, you know he's gonna buy drugs or alcohol." I said "Well, he might. But he has the option to eat." I taught her something that day and she remembers it this 30 years later. "So many humans, so little humanity." Alan Watts.

This beautiful lady is so content with her life. Whether she is homeless or not, she seems well with everything going on with her. Some people with even a million dollars aren't this content. The world will never be enough for a lot of these people. If you are unhappy, it wouldn't matter what situation you are in, rich or homeless. Might be worried about your homeless situation but, still happy with whatever they are dealt.

To be 60 years old and spend your days in a continuous cycle of survival mode is a testament to her humble and sage existence. She has soulful and empathic eyes. She shouldn’t feel shamed for her situation. She took lemons and made lemonade and I’m proud she’s had the strength to endure so much! May she soon know the blessings she is being prepared for! I hope she gets a safe comfortable home to rest every night! Blessings!!!!
