Singapore is said to be generally safe but is it really? Regarding pick-pocketing, a lot of the Japanese online articles tell us to be highly alert as "pick-pocketing happens very often at crowded places". To find out if that is true, I window-shopped for an hour at Singapore's most crowded location. I also choped with $50 cash, dropped my wallet and left my laptop unattended. The result? Watch till the end!

A few years ago, i forgot and left my motorcycle helmet on a coffeeshop chair. Went grocery shopping for about an hour and only then realised i forgot my helmet. Rushed back to the coffeeshop and saw 2 uncles (who were initially drinking beer at a table beside me) sitting on my table. When they saw me approaching, one of them said "ahhh. Forget your helmet right? Becareful ah next time, you lucky we here". Drunk uncles W, i love Singapore hahah

As a local Singaporean, I commend you for the bravery, locals do not usually put their wallets, phones to 'chope' tables as though there is a low risk, there is still a possibilty of it being taken. leaving the macbook in a cafe however is less rare as people tend to leave such items when they are studying to go to the bathroom, so they tend to return quickly. leaving your cash out on the table however, is an easy way of it getting swiped off and dropping cash on the floor is anyone's game as there is no concrete proof that the cash belongs to you. as for leaving your wallet out by your back pocket, i dont think ive ever gotten my items stolen through such a method. it could just be me, but i feel singaporeans do not really like to touch other people? as in brush up against them or bump into people. so the likelyhood of that happening is relatively low as well ^^" the part where you left your wallet/ cash got me a little nervous. aside from that i think singapore is relatively safe. as you have described. low crime doesnt mean no crime though, please becareful out there ^^/

I've once accidentally left my wallet on the table at a Kopitiam. I was already on the way to take the train when i realised my wallet was missing. Went back to the Kopitiam table that I sat at and there was no wallet to be found. Went to the management and they were not aware of any missing wallets. Then i went back to the MRT station to ask if anyone had informed them of a missing wallet. They said they will get back to me if they are informed. I went back home and sometime in the evening, the officers at the train station called me and informed me someone had dropped my wallet off to them and i was glad nothing was stolen!

Years ago I left on my wallet on the bus seat once. $800 salary cash in it. I went back to the Punggol bus interchange where I first boarded the bus and reported it. The next day they called me to collect it back! All $800 still inside! A passenger found it and returned it to the bus captain who brought it back! Many many thanks to the kind passenger & captains in Punggol bus interchange! Really appreciated!

While i had already entered the Train, a teenage boy ran after me into the Train just to RETURN back me the Whole pouch with Everything still inside. He got out of the Train himself. Incredible ! pumpkinsparks9224 may be suggesting that there might be a chance that a girl might be interested in a guy but may be shy to reach out to the guy. Hence, "accidentally" leaving behind an item for the guy to spot the item and return it to her. This will create a natural meeting scene and may also help her to gauge some of the guy's qualities such as honesty, keen eye to detail, helpful, friendly etc.

Whenever I see any valuables or small children unattended, I instantly feel the responsibility to take care of them to make sure that they are safe until the owner/parent returns. I must do this otherwise I will be very nervous about the valuables/children. I am a proud Singaporean. :) By the way, there are too many foreigners living in Singapore so it is better to be careful about your valuables.

Many years ago, there was a pregnant lady with a toddler in a shopping trolley. She needed to use the bathroom badly. I offered to keep an eye on her baby girl. Initially, she was hesitant. I took out my wallet and told her to hold on to my identity card if she didn't trust me. The whole time she was in the cubicle, I assured her that I was STILL outside by chatting with her little one. I believe if I were in a similar situation, I would appreciate someone looking out for me too! :)

As a local, there are a 2 MAIN reasons that i can think of. First off, Singapore is just so darn small and with tons of cameras around, you basically cant run far if police reports were to be lodged. The sentence for theft is just not worth it (for that few dollars). Second, us locals really not that poor till the extent that we need to STEAL these things (to put food on our table), it won't get us anywhere.. But still it is a risky move/experiment as there are more and more different sorts of people around

Once I was very tired as I had insomnia and all I wanted was to withdraw $200+ and then rush home to nap. And when you withdraw from ATM, your card will come out first before your cash. Because I wasn't focused, I just took my card and leave, while my cash came out 3 seconds later. And the dude who was behind me raised his voice "Bro! What's wrong with you"..His choice of word wasn't the kindest, but clearly his heart is. I guess he felt pressured thinking of how troublesome it is having to hold onto the cash and return it to the police if I walked away and didn't return. And he took the cash and pass to me As I was like 5 steps away from the ATM.

I think it was very difficult to sell them just several years back and thus this actually do reduce it. Furthermore, there are a lot police camera nowadays and thus making it harder to escape being caught. And also pickpockets will not target very obvious targets as they could be police made decoys to get them caught.

Pls never leave your wallet and belongings unattended. It is not safe doing that, low crime doesn't mean no crime. Usually if most Singaporeans sees it they will protect your belongings until you are back and they will advise you not to do that. It is too dangerous doing that. Not all human beings are honest.

😂😂 Hi Gjib. Miss your Singapore food tour. I don't think you've tried Dunman Hawker Centre. A hidden jewel. Must try are (1) Gina's The Singapore Vadai, (2) Say Seng Famous Tau Kwa Pau and (3) Joo Chiat Ah Huat Wanton Noodle. All located on the ground floor and near each other. Simply sumptuous. Hope to see a vlog from you on this. Cheers!

Haha, great try! Super impressed by your faith in Singapore! You won't get your pocket picked with someone literally watching your back! I've lived here my whole life and have never heard of pickpocket incidents before, at least in my circle.

If I was done by someone, I would leave sooner cos there’s a possibility of being suspected that a few money are lost while I’m away by the owner. There is highly likely these kind of crimes happen even in Japan.

Once I was queueing to withdraw money at an ATM & guy in front left without taking his cash withdrawn. I grabbed the cash and ran after him. I scolded him for his carelessness & forgetfulness as I could end up with free meal & lodging in Changi Resort if I took his money.. LOL

I was at a cafe earlier. My friend and I marvelled at how this woman left ALL her stuff - laptop, phone and bag - at the table she was sitting at. There was another man in the same cafe who left his laptop at his table, too.

I retuned a $10 note to an Aussie when I was Melbourne. I saw her dropped the note. Well, since I know who to return to, I cannot in good conscience not return it to her. Singaporean here 😢. I also once returned $700 to a couple watching movie in front of me. I knew who to return to... So again, I needed to return it. Sigh... If only I don't know who to return to. Which once, it did. I found a $50 note in a lift lobby, and hehe, I kept it cos idk who dropped it 😂

Doing this in hong lim I think somewhat safer since cbd, crowded area most aren't desperate enough to do this "risky" crime. You leave it in a quiet coffeeshop in neighborhood areas thing I think would be different, especially when you just put cash there. Laptops and wallet should be fine though, its usualy the loose cash that is more tempting. Most people don't really care enough to even notice your stuff

I’m not sure if the pickpocket social experiment is a valid one. With a camera person following you and your narration, it’s a bit hard for a pickpocket to take action on your wallet or cash from your back pocket.😅

Handphone is more likely to be gone though. Jewellery as well. Also, things more likely to disappear in toilet cubicles where no one is watching. In public, it is less likely for anyone to do bad. Singaporean here. Do NOT risk it. Low crime doesn’t mean no crime. In public, there are mothers who leave crying babies on their own as well. The general standard here is that the majority will guard it for you. But try in a place that can’t be seen. People behave differently.

If it is just some random cash blown onto the floor surely some people will take it. But if it is a wallet with ID and credit cards, phone and laptop usually people will pass it to the stall owner at the hawker center or if u r at the mrt station/bus interchange normally pass them to the lost & found.
