Solar panels on red dots have always been a gimmick in the past, but the new Holosun SCS and SCRS are seeking to change that. Did they succeed? Or just suck? Let's find out.

I'm surprised that non of the auto adjust modes optics let you use the adjustment buttons while in auto mode. Such that it basically acts as a trim to set what you want the brightness level to be for a given light input. Combined with a limiter that only allows the auto brightness to go up or down say, +/- 4 settings, would make for a much more useful auto brightness for a CCW handgun context.

I feel that would be the next version of the SCS we'd see for pistols. They do give you that manual max brightness setting for 30 min but I'd like to at least see that be programmable because the max brightness is way too much even in an overcast day

Here's another idea: Put a light sensor in the field of view. You know, so it adjusts to the actual amount of light going through the optic. Crazy idea? I'm guessing they're using the voltage output from the solar panel as the "light sensor?" That's simple and easy, but also lazy.

Agreed. I've run Holosun 407cs on my rifles and my pistol for a while now, solely because of the solar backup with the shake awake and auto-off. I really like having a 2 moa dot over a rifle scope, too. 6" dot at 300 on a 5.56 gun, mounted at +4.5" over bore and a 65 yd zero (16" GPR) makes taking shots in a hurry with your dot out to 300 a breeze.

I took part in environmental destructive testing of the Holosun 507c as part of a defence-related weapons procurement. The solar panel cracked during minor drop testing which did not damage other optics. The 507c would also default to some stupid solar panel mode (solar low?) after every battery swap (which we did after each test...) which was very irritating. We could not find any benefit of having the solar panel; it was simply a structural weakness and usability problem. I also learned the EOTech Vudu is terrible...

I’ve never had a problem with the auto brightness settings on my Holosuns. Yes a good setting for inside is a little dim when moving outside and a little bright when moving from outside to inside but a quick single click of the plus or minus buttons fixes it and all transitions from brighter or lower light adjust fine. In a SHTF situation where it is set to one of the other it’s not too bad either way that I can’t use the optic in an emergency without having to adjust first. If a spare minute pops up I can click a button with my left hand. I don’t really plan on using the solar failsafe but the auto brightness is my favorite feature and I have several models of Holosuns for my stuff

In the USA, you can often legally steal someone else's patented design by simply adding a unique feature to the stolen design. (Note: *your* unique feature doesn't necessarily have to add value, it just has to be unique.) That's why I've assumed these unique solar features don't work all that great. The solar panel addition to red dot sights is a legal loophole which allows manufacturers to legally steal whole- or partially patented-designs from other manufacturers.
@roflchopter11

The idea that these patents were even issued is laughable. Based on the number of people independently inventing forward facing narrow field of view light sensors, this feature is definitely "obvious to someone skilled in the art"

I have a Holosun HS403C. You get the option of the 5 years battery life constant on which is the same as used like a normal Aimpoint T1, but if the battery dies, or something goes wrong like I have seen in other red dots such as battery compartments coming loose and losing complete connection (both on Sig Romeo and Vortex optics) this has a backup. It may not be perfect but even in a dark room there is still a dot I can see, so you aren't without any sighting whatsoever. I only use it to target shoot in a dark range with a bright target and I have no issues whatsoever seeing the dot. It just means if something goes wrong and it dies or the connection points fail, there will be still some form of dot there. I have never had an issue for the last 6 and a half years left on since I got it. I like this feature a lot. But not all Holosun dots with a solar panel even work with no battery like the HE507C.

Maybe holosun haven't got this nailed yet, but i don't see any reason why this COULDN'T work. I have a casio pro-trek watch I bought eight years ago which is charged by solar. It has automatic LED illumination when a wrist is turned and it's sufficiently dark, sort of like "shake awake". It has much smaller photocells than most sights, proudces much more light, and has lasted a very long time. I suspect sights will eventually figure out solar. The tech exists, it just hasn't been well imolemented yet.

I bought a 509tx2 to mount on an AK for the light weight and low height over bore. The glass quality on mine was not good enough for a rifle. Maybe for a subgun and for sure a pistol. I swapped it for an SCRS at the cost of another ounce and far prefer the SCRS on a rifle. The glass is good and can be magnified where the 509 made everything fuzzy. I didn't get it for the ability to autoadjust brightness since I also found it to be crap too but for less than 300 dollars it is a solid red dot if you're trying to stay weight conscious. Time will tell how my battery holds up with just to sun to keep it going. it is also nicely low profile with the recessed turrets and thick housing. I think since it is overall shorter than an aimpoint style dot it blocks your vision less too (shoot with both eyes open anyway).

I loath internal batteries on most anything that doesn't also have a replaceable main battery housing. So on the surface it's almost like a tritium alternative with similar features. However my concern about this over tritium is that extreme cold doesn't sap tritium illumination. What would it do to this optic, even though it uses such a small amount of charge to power the LED as it's being used. Might not be a big deal in this case. Not like it is with say internal battery powered flashlights anyway. But still, that will reduce the life of the battery charge significantly. Cold kills battery performance.

I've got some of the solar powered 403c on a 9mm and 22lr carbine that i use for small game hunting and i really like the auto-brightness feature of the sight. it works for the changing light conditions throughout the day and with different cloud conditions. Here, the key is that for things like rabbits, racoon, coyote, etc, they are smaller and usually difficult to distinguish against the local vegetation, so having the dot too bight causes washout that obstructs a clear view of the target. Here, the auto-brightness setting is actually just about right for having the right contrast between dot and target. Bonus: even if the battery is dead, solar still gives me a dot during hunting hours. I'm not expecting you to change your mind, i just wanted to point out that there are different use cases where traditional solar is not "worthless" but actually a plus. I'm using this on hunting gear, so there is no way i'm putting a light on these, or hanging extra "backup" irons on these because weight needs to be a low as possible on this carry carbine. The solar panel is the 'backup'. Actually, it's more like the battery is the backup because the solar mode is the primary use mode. The SCS system is definitely an improvement in the right direction vs the older solar system.

Besides once you’ve got the optic setting you want the rubber buttons really don’t matter. Edit: But yes it was expensive, however with the auto dimming, green dot, brilliant fit, I mean I think it was worth every penny. Just fits a DPP footprint 2nd Edit: Seriously give the SCS320 a shot on something. It’s a green dot unlike most of the others and is much brighter in comparison. @oscarbear7498 well not quite. An EMP is likely to fry the small circuit board in the sights also, still rendering them dead. But I have like 5 fiber optic/tritium reflex sights from Meprolight and Trijicon, and those are EMP proof, but will only live 20 years before the tritium wears out.

Ive honestly never had an issue with my holosun solar auto settings, i guess to each yheir own. I have mild astigmatism, so I keep my dots on low power anyway to keep them from starbursting

personally if you are gonna have multiple things to keep your optic have a long enough lifespan I think super conduction and solar should be a must...but hell, its a red dot, its gonna have a long life span. I'm perfectly fine with my aimpoint PRO, that or dolling out the extra money for a eotech or T-2. if you don't have that just go to older technology like fiber optic for day brightness.

Great video Hop I tried to find information on this exact subject 4 or 5 months ago. But since the internet is broken and trying to find information on anything is well retarted. It was difficult to say the last your video answered my questions.

Awesome. Im snagging one as a piggyback to let my 509t go back on a pistol. My worry was it wouldnt be good under NVG's but since its comparable to a 509t thats great. 509t is great under nods. 👍🙏

the first time I took my 501c out I thought it was broke because there was no dot. I gave up after awhile and when I got back home indoors I could see it again, the auto brightness was on and since I was in the woods I couldn't see the damn dot at all.

I just cant trust it yet lol. I have a PDP and the aesthetics are amazing with the HOLOSUN that was designed for it. But not having a choice to change a battery just knocked me away from a purchase lol

i think they will get this concept right some day, just probably not at the prices most people expect for holosun. I think I would rather see this implemented into a scope rather than a red dot if thats feasible. I feel like we should have been seeing more "fusion" power/illumination in scopes by now. I wonder why we havent seen fiber optic + solar/super capacitor + battery illumination scopes yet in pursuit of the much sought daylight bright LPVO. Maybe theres a good reason that makes perfect sense, I'm not an engineer.

One reviewer said that a Holosun rep says the SCR models charge anytime there is a light source present even if the dot is "off." I suspect the batteries will last as long as the solar panels work. Over time solar panels tend to lose efficiency until they no longer function. A rechargeable battery should be able to last as long as the solar panels.

Since Holosun figured out a way to change a battery without removing it (cough cough trijicon) i dont see a point in solar panels. Ill change a 1632 battery once a year, thats fine with me.

So I have to ask what do think of the pdp ? , secondly I suggest people look up what an emp can actually do to electrical systems this notion that everything would be destroyed in even a small emp is whole hardly not true , an emp you’d have to be worried about is within what’s roughly known as an e1 emp and these are generally happening when nuclear bombs or other large disruptions of gamma particles scatter across the atmosphere, and let me just say that I think I’m more worried about my skin getting cooked off or being a shadow stuck to a wall before I’m worried about my optics or even my phone or other stuff but seriously emp’s seem to only have a real effect on the power grid more then your individual electronics

I'm an EMP denier, personally. I keep trying to get Brass Facts to make a video about it because he's better with science stuff than me. PDP is pretty good. I need to make a vid about it one of these days.

Note about the SCS pistol optics: according to the manual, what i can find on the internet, and messing with one at my lgs, while they have a manual override mode that maxes out the brightness for 30min, it doesnt actually have manual brightness adjustment beyond that. If anyone knows of a secret menu or something that allows a manual adjust i wanna know cause i was considering this sight, but no manual adjustment=useless to me

I had the SCS, removed it for an EPS. Partially because I'm an eye-cripple, partially because open dots are communist trash, and partially because the window size is tiny. I also have an SCRS, set to a manual single dot. Which so far is dope as an offset dot on my 308DMR
